Putting in an outdoor kitchen. We had to saw cut the concrete patio to pull plumbing and electrical. Obviously we have some concrete to repair. The trenches run over three different types of concrete finishes including salt finish, smooth finish and an area of tan colored concrete. We would like to tie it all together at completion and are looking for some ideas. Just to add some additional confusion we have Cool-Deck around out pool. Our initial idea was a Bomanite type product. Are there any other finishes we should take a look at for this application?

After the concrete is repaired, how about a stamped topping to bring the differerent finishes/colors back together?

www.scofield.com for some ideas. Look at Stamp grade Texture Top and some of the Pavecrafter stamp tools.

Full disclosure - I work for Scofield.

So they pour a thin coat over the existing slabs?

Yes. But it is not structural. Any cracks in the base will show through in time, but if the base is solid, this is a great way to make it look like new with much less work than pulling up the existing slabs.

You could also grind the different areas down some and then either stain or dye and seal them. This will get the surface finish uniform, but you need a heavier stain (read darker when done) if the concrete is of differing quaility or color at the beginning. This is a quickly growing way to refurb old concrete.

What do you use to grind the concrete?

A specific tool - and it is not DIY at all.

Concrete eraser. That's what we call a jack hammer.

Actually what you'd want is a bush hammer. It will be a time consuming, messy process but you'll have a rough surface for the new layer of concrete to bond to.

With an existing salt finish, you are looking at slab prep of some form before you can apply a new finish.

We did rock salt on our patio and it looks really nice. Lasting quite well now after ten years. We had a few extra seams put in so the cracks would form on them and not on the slab portions, we have adobe clay that heaves every winter and slabs crack a lot. Keep that in mind, look at neighbors slabs that have been poured in the past 5-10 years to see what they look like today.
