Hi, unfortunately it's only CE certified and I don't know of any current plans for a CPSC version.

Chris
This is dumb IMO. Why on earth would an American based company not make their fastest helmet available to the US? Would making it CPSC certified nullify the aero advantages over the TT02? (I own the TT02 as well as a Shiv TT...so I am a full supporter here)

I totally hear you guys. Believe me, I would love to see the helmet available to as many people as possible. With the particular construction technique used in it though, it only meets CE certification standards. Not to worry though, as Mark has alluded to before, this particular helmet represents a step in the process and there are good things to come...

Hi Chris- Can you comment on testing protocol? For example, was the Spiuk's front and/or rear vents taped up?

Sure, we tested every helmet in all out of the box configurations. So if there were visors or other pieces (like factory vent plugs), we tested them in every combination. We did not tape over vents or otherwise modify helmets (so in the case of the Spiuk, we didn't tape anything). In any data that you see out there, we only include the fastest combination from any given model. Hope that helps.

Can you talk about how you folks controlled for helmet size vs. your 'model'? Mediums throughout? Best fit? etc?

Yup, we used mediums for all the helmets. That was generally the "best fitting" helmet size across all the models.

Did anyone mention the fact that the new Specialized McLaren helmet has no active venting for cooling? Those vents are merely for aero drag reduction, and not for cooling.

Personally, I have been using my Spiuk for 2 years, and will continue to use it.

Venting purely for cooling in an aero helmet is highly overrated...

If you put vents in low pressure rear-ward parts of the helmet, then air flows inside from high pressure areas in the front.

anyone have any thoughts o the obviously high head position of the manaquin and its affect on the results. ie, i am not going to purposely tt with my head that high in the air, will add way more drag than any helmet could possibly reduce, for me.

I'm a little leery of dummy-specific helmet data: the only dummy whose drag I'm interested in minimizing is me :)

Side note for everyone: I'm more than happy to have a discussion on the S-Works+McLaren helmet but I really don't want to hijack this thread. Maybe specific questions can get their own thread or use one of the old ones?
Joe, no problem! To answer your questions: Yes, our helmet dummy has different head positions that we can attach to it. In addition, we test at various tilts (or angles of attack) with each head position. In short, we try to cover as many different positions as possible, but as you point out, it's tough to come to general conclusions with aero helmets. We aimed to be as "robust" as possible to different positions. We also tested it with a few live athletes too.

About AC: Yes :-)

We provide our athletes with information and data and leave it up to them to make the call in terms of what they are willing to trade. Some athletes, knowing the penalty, are willing to make the trade for comfort (in this case).

Hi Chris,

I thought I would take this talk back here as you suggested rightfully.

I'm very interested in that shield VS no shield talk too and it's great to see somebody (well... a company) finally digging a bit more on that subject !

I've been waiting for the S-Works McLaren TT for months, as soon as there is one available in France (with CEN certification for now) I'll try as hard as I can to get one !
While I'm waiting, I sold my Selector, gave me Wingspan to a friend and will be getting a Kask Bambino this week, with visors of course as a Bambino doesn't look good at all without.

I found your comment about the visor creating a "round" front surface while we are trying to make the face more aero very interesting, but doesn't that suppose that the visor is quite perpendicular to the wind flow ? When I ride on my TT bike and especially with a visor, I find myself riding with my head quite down and using my eyes to look forward, not bending my neck too much. You suggest a visor is not a good option on most helmets but helps with comfort (which explained why Contador keeps using it even though he has the information from you). Have you tested the visor with head "down", even in that case, was it still considerably slower than without ?

Thanks for your advice and I really hope this McLaren helmet is available soon, so looking forward to putting my hands on one (and my head in one actually).

By the way, any idea of the weight of the CEN version that might comes first ?

I'm also a little curious to the visor vs NO visor debate. I notice a lot of track cyclists have visors on their helmets. Also most helmet companies are all putting visors on their new aero & track helmets so why is this? Are they all adding the visor to make a slower end product? Kask, Bell, Giro, Louis Garneau, etc. Confused?

Im still trying to figure out why no one ever tests against a Limar Crono 05.
Looks like an identical shape to the McLaren minus the vents.

There is an aero nerd here in Australia that has tested everything available (bar the McLaren) and has yet to find anything faster.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
Minor move forward
Won't budge the needle
