Living north of DFW airport things are fine here. Almost the opposite problems, too many bikers on the weekends. Anywhere north west of Flowermound/ argyle etc. is great for biking. Just gets annoying with large packs of riders taking up the whole roads on the weekends ...

You're crazy. That 35 mile FM, Argyle, Bartonville, Copper Canyon loop is the best kept secret in DFW. I would argue the groups add to the safety as it's well known by the people who live in those areas that bikers love that route. Plus, the police are everywhere in those towns looking for people speeding and rolling stop signs.

You wouldn't happen to have a mapmyride route or something of this would you? I'm not far from that area.

I grew up out there, I used to ride my bike on Highway 26 and 121 -- can't do that anymore, that's for sure. The roads are mega-dangerous.

The best-kept secret in the D/FW area is that there is a ton of good XC biking. You can't call it mountain biking because there are no mountains, but there are lots of really fun trails and a cool MTB scene. When I lived there, my bike training was either indoors, XC on the many great trails, or looping over and over around WRL.

Texas Motor Speedway is probably another good resource, I hadn't considered that one. They used to do (and probably still do) road races around it.

It all depends, I guess. It is down to 2 lanes, but there's also not much traffic up there(especially if you ride early on the weekends) and I feel like the people that live/drive out there are relatively used to cyclists using the road so they give you some room when they pass. You can ride up the parkway until it dead-ends into FM 428. FM 428 is chipseal, but it was laid down 3-4 years ago so it's starting to wear down & not be so rough. You can head up that way, hit the softball fields for a pit stop, then head over to Preston/289 & keep going north all the way to the Red River if you're so inclined. I did that once, there's a good shoulder until about 15 miles left to the river, and there's no chipseal once you get a couple miles north of Celina(at least last time I was there about 1.5 years ago). I'd do that route over 380, personally. Fair warning though, it's a straight north/south route so you're likely to ride into a headwind all the way back.

Thanks man, good stuff. I see what you're talking about on Google Maps. I'm use to the N/S winds....pretty much anywhere I go is N/S....not many E/W routes (at least that I take). Thanks again!

Any particular area in DFW for this? Up here in N. Dallas/Plano there's Arbor Hills, and to be honest I haven't been there yet. I'd like to get more in trail riding in the winter. I've been doing Tris for 6 years now, and having been road riding all throughout each year.....would like to mix it up this winter.

At this risk of adding more riders ;) This may be a little out of date but the BlueBonnet ride used to hit most of the areas north of DFW. Hill http://www.bikely.com/...t-Intermediate-Route Portions on Hilltop road actually hit a 10% grade for a few hundred meters which is pretty steep for this area. Most of the area is country roads with not too much traffic still at least early in the mornings. Just watch out for the Baronville police, they are extremely picky.

You'd have to come down to the Grand Prairie/Joe Pool Lake area. You can start at Joe Pool Lake and head south towards Midlothian/Maypearl. That's about as country as you can get...

RMR, can you elaborate some? I live in Oak Cliff and this sounds like a doable route. I'm not far from Joe Pool and I'd really appreciate your input.

Check out dorba.org, they maintain a list of trails. The ones I remember are Cedar Hill, Rowlett, Knob Hill, Grapevine Northshore, and L.B. Houston but there are others.

I've done a lot of tri's and have been branching out in to more XC riding the last year as well. Definitely check out the dorba website but the two best that I've ridden so far are Northshore on Lake Grapevine. There are three different park entrances on the Flower Mound side with Murrell Park being free. Great single track with some easier sections and some very technical sections. Well marked. All one direction. Great for running as well. They just opened a new loop there and I believe from one point to the other and back (Rockledge to Twin Coves) is about 18-20 miles. Another trail system to check out is Big Cedar. This is off the 20 just south of Dallas but totally worth the 30 minute drive. The property is owned and maintained by Mountain Creek Church and the variety is awesome. It is extremely well maintained with bathrooms and showers on site. All trails are one direction and labeled by difficulty (kind of like ski runs). It's essentially one big loop (Ranger Loop) that has 8 spur trails off of it that are all varying in difficulty and terrain. Great variety and great venue. Additionally I just did my first night MTB race on saturday which was a ton of fun. The race was at Boulder Creek. Very tight single track but fun race. To me I would rank Big Cedar #1, Northshore a close 2nd and Boulder Creek 3rd

Here's a map my run link to the basic Flo Mo, Argyle etc route. This is not my map http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1541302
There are quite a few variations on this that take the basic "loop" from 35 miles all the way up to 80. There are also no less than 6 group rides per week out of Flower Mound that all have varying speeds and distances. This is where I do all my riding so let me know if you have any questions.

This is the route I take when I head north. the single lane traffic past 380 on the tollway kind of sucks since there's a lot of idiots, but once you're past that taking a right on 428 past the softball fields and then a right through celina and then head north on business 289 to preston/289, it is free sailing from there. You could head to gunter and then on up as far north as you really want to go, there is a shoulder. On windy days sometimes the big trucks are no fun even on the shoulder since it can cause some rough gusts but other than that the route is really good and a lot of cyclists are out there.

Aren't you in Oak Cliff? I think exchanged messages in the past. I ride from OC over to the lake then head out along 30/80 to Mesquite then drop down into Sunnyvale and head out towards Rockwall. RBM has a few groups you can catch on and head out with at varying times. Some times I'll ride the P2 at the back of the group, use them to get out to the country roads then take off on my own. Good route, called South Loop.

You can also leave from OC and head out to Joe Pool along Mountain Valley or whatever. If you are in cliff let me know if you ever want to get a small group heading south.
