Peroneal Tendon Pain?

I've got some pain on the outside and bottom of my feet. yes, I'm lucky enough to injure both feet at the same time. I did Boise half IM two weeks ago and my feet still hurt. My thought is either that my shoes were a little worn out (400 miles) or that my feet were numb for the first 3 miles and running on frozen feet created an injury. I've spent about 15-20 hrs researching and trying to diagnose myself and have come to the conclusion of cuboid syndrome or peroneal tendonitis. I'm thinking tendonitis. But others describe their pain further back and up the ankle. So, does peroneal tendonitis occur near the anchor point by the metatarsals? Any Ideas?
Pain Details:
Slight discomfort on left foot during the last 2 miles of the race. 6 hrs post race they hurt. next morning could barely stand on the feet. day 3 was walking with limp.
Area:
the bottom of the calcaneus and the cuboid behind the styloid process. My heal is fine.
only hurts when I have weight on it. feels fine with massaging
more of an ache pain. I have experienced acute pain twice and have not been able to duplicate the symptom
I can evert the foot without pain
I can plantar flex without pain
both feet have the same symptoms. They alternate which foot wants to be worse.
Symptoms seem to be getting worse this week. . . . sigh
I'm pain free out of bed. but walking around in the morning and the pain returns.
Treatment thus far:
RICE
IB Profen
tried rolling my foot on a ball, the next few hours led me to believe that was a bad idea. ouch.
I am exactly where every decision that I've made and every action that I've taken has put me.

I had peroneal tendinitis last year. It hurt like crazy and was about where you describe, outside bottom of the foot. I used a number of things to treat it:
1 - Hot Water soakings with Epsom salt
2 - Golf Ball
3 - Anti-inflammatory gel (Voltaren)
4 - Ankle brace
Finally, I used one of those big rubber bands to to help strengthen the ankle joint.
I only occasionally have it flare up on me, but it usually doesn't last long if I do the above.

Over the years having had literally hundreds of bouts of tendonitis, I can't recall a single one that wasn't more painful in the morning out of bed than later one as I moved around.
Rule out the tendonitis.

I had this happen once in each foot at different times. I wasn't biking or swimming during that time and was just running. Both times I would guess it came from overuse due to increasing mileage and may have been due to worn out shoes as well.
The first time I had all the symptoms you're describing and it mostly stopped after 2 weeks of rest...I tried to limit walking around an I ended up driving to work rather than taking the metro.
The pain was always worse in the morning and the site of the pain varied from my baby toe to the outside of my foot and then up underneath the bone that sticks out of your ankle and a little above the ankle as this is where the tendon runs.
I didn't do anything other than alternate ice and heat and I used KT Tape all the time while walking around and for a few months when I started running again. I believe there is a specific way to tape for the peroneal tendon on their website, it's pretty simple. The pain would come back sometimes after running but only soreness. The second time it happened in late September, I still ran a marathon a month later but the soreness didn't stop until January.
Hope this helps

I'm inclined to agree. It doesn't really behave like tendonitis. I still think it was just worn shoes. I've run that distance many times before in those shoes without issue. The only two variables I can think of are shoe support and cold feet. literally numb for the first three miles. Thanks to a 47* race day and a 12 mile bike due to wind. I didn't even get a chance to dry off on the bike let alone warm up. Thanks for your input.

I had a pair of spikes back in HS that only took about 1 mile of running in to cause a severe pain in my foot. It was direct stress to the metatarsal bone, no tendons or muscles involved. The first time I shook it off because it got better shortly after. The second time I got rid of the shoes.
your shoes could be worn out, but have you continued to use them since?
And I don't doubt that severely cold feet can somehow be damaged while running.

I've replaced the shoes with the next level of support in the nike lineup. I went from Vomero to the Structure. Both considered cushioning shoes, but the structure is slightly more supportive. As soon as I slipped it on in the store I had some relief. So I think it's support related, but that doesn't really diagnose me. I've made an appointment for tomorrow. But that will just be a referral. I'm probably two weeks from a diagnoses . . . sigh

Any decent massage therapist should be able to get rid of that for you in a few weeks. You need to worry about the belly of the muscle more than you do the attachment point.

UPDATE
I've got this narrowed down pretty well and it appears to be Cuboid Syndrome. It's been getting better slowly. I had some xrays on friday and was informed that I do not have a stress fracture and now have my referral to a specialist. So it's been two weeks from race day and some discolorations have appeared in both feet. Can bruising take two weeks to work it's way to the surface of the skin? It's not black and blue but definitely darker than the skin normally.
