HITS Triathlon Series announces return to Hunter Mountain this September
NYS DOT bridge repair affects bike courses for HITS Triathlon Series - Cooperstown event
SAUGERTIES, NY (June 20, 2012) – HITS Triathlon Series announced today that the September 22-23 event originally plan for the Cooperstown, NY area will now be held 54 miles south east in Haines Falls/Hunter Mountain. The decision comes as a result of bridge replacement planned by the NYS DOT at two locations along State Highway 166 that would greatly impact the bike routes for the Half and Full distance races.
“We were notified two weeks ago by officials from the Cooperstown area that necessary work to replace two bridges on our route was approved,” said Mark H. Wilson, HITS Triathlon Series Race Director. “The DOT informed us that there would be single lane traffic control through the two work zones from June 15 until September 28. After reviewing several alternatives and after the overwhelming success of our Hunter Mountain event, we decided that our best bet was to move the race to an area that would not be impacted by construction on race day. We were welcomed back to Hunter with open arms and believe September’s event will be a great success.”
The event will now be held at North/South Lake State Park in Haines Falls, which was the location of HITS’ most recent race earlier this month. The swim will once again take place at South Lake and the bike and run courses will take athletes on a stunning mountain-top journey during the start of the fall foliage season in the Catskills. In addition, North/South Lake State Park has committed to repair sections of the road leading to South Lake to improve conditions for athletes leaving and returning on the bike courses.
“We were thrilled to hear from the Park Officials that they will be making repairs to South Lake Road,” Wilson continued. “By September that road will be smooth and race ready, which will greatly improve everyone’s experience leaving and returning to transition.”
Course maps for September’s HITS Triathlon Series – Hunter Mountain are available online at HitsTriathlonSeries.com. Lodging partners will also be posted soon for athletes requiring overnight accommodations.

Got this email this morning... not really too happy about it. I was looking forward to the Cooperstown course. Is it possible to get a refund for this race if I decided I wanted to do something else?

I have no idea about refunds.
I'm not part of the HITS organization.

By all accounts, Hunter was their most successful race (unsure if this is because practice makes perfect or if it was the course itself).

This does suck, however, for people that live in the NY area that already did Hunter and had signed up for Cooperstown.

I did this a week and a half ago. Speed Bumps? On a race course? Really? I wonder if the "repairs" eliminate or enhance them.

Thanks for posting. I'll have to consider it. It was an awesome course (other than the speed bumps) and seems pretty heads up to anticipate the Cooperstown problem and deal with it proactively. The fact that it actually has a big campground on the course is a huge upside as well.

5 years ago, I was working on an Olympic distance triathlon. We'd swim from the same beach, but head down 23A, cross the base of the mountain range, then climb the legendary Devil's Kitchen to return to the lake for the 10K run. The poor condition of the access road led to the DEC denying the permit. Hopefully, with the promised road improvements, we can stage the Devil's Kitchen tri next year.

I think the Cats are almost as good as Lake Placid for endurance events and about 3 hours closer to NY. I think one timed to be a great tune up for IMLP would be a success. I ran the LPHM last year and there were some peeps in there to run the IM course, which I've heard, is nearly the same.

If you're from NYC, and you're racing Placid, the Catskills are the place to train.
Training in Placid only pisses off the locals.
Come to Hurley and we'll give you a pond to swim in, a place to park, a kind of clean toilet and a free beer.

I don't believe HITS gives refunds however their website says they offer athletes a one-time deferral to another race within one year. I'm not sure if that means once in a lifetime or once per year but at least you can defer if you need to.
