Where do you mount your race number? Pictures please Quote | Reply

So I did a search on this, but nothing popped up in the first 30 pages of results.

Where do you mount your race number on your frame? Our local races usually provide large numbers that, even trimmed, are difficult to mount without having it flapping in the wind. I'd love to see some pictures of how most of you solve this and your rationale for doing so. Thanks.

At least for U.S. triathlons, I don't think it has to be in any particular place, as long as it's visible. I've seen them on:

- top tubes
- down tubes
- seat tubes
- seat stays
- seat posts
- aero bars
- extending straight back off of a hangar attached to the seat tube

I think as long as it meets the following, it will suffice:
- not interfering with anything mechanically
- not brushing against your arms or legs, for the annoyance factor
- try to have it visible from both sides of the bicycle, but if it can only be from one side, make sure it's the left side (that's the side the officials ride up on)
- the number should be readable horizontally, or at most vertically up-down or down-up. Don't put it on upside-down on the down tube

Look at some other bikes at your next race for ideas. You might also check the bike photos for a recent race, especially if the photographer is taking side or angle shots.

I put mine on the seat post. The Trek SC seat post is quite wide so they normally fit well with a little bit of scissor work to the sticker.

Seatpost on my P3 and I use a stapler to secure it nice and tight.

If I were taller, I'd go the seatpost route. Since I'm not, I have a zip tie or cable housing stuck into the seat clamp hanging out the back. I attach the big numbers to it.

I really do like the smaller numbers that come with the Tri tats. I'm not convinced I like the tats but their bike and helmet numbers are very nice.

Most races use stickers, and I trim them to precisely the size of the number and stick them to my seat tube.
The seat tube on my Scott Plasma is aero, but hardly remarkable and has always had enough room for the ~2" high numbers.
I ride a 52cm frame and still have plenty of room - I rotate the sticker 90' so the 'bottom' faces my rear wheel.

If you still get the cardboard numbers with twisties, I prefer the front of the top tube (wrap it over the tube and underneath where the
bento box would be). Again, trim for a tidy fit and wrap the twisites around the down tube. Use tape to secure
in place and minimize any gaps.

Not around here. We get these huge paper numbers with 2 small strips of adhesive on the back. Its the I've been doing it the same way for a few years now and I keep thinking there has to be a better way. This picture is from last year, but you can see how much space it takes up even on my relatively long seat tube. Granted, there's a lot of room to trim there, but not without cutting out all the adhesive on the back.

At the larger races I've done, the stickers or hard plastic numbers haven't been a problem. For the local sprints and olymipcs I'm just tired of having my number flapping around like a sail.

I always took scissors and tape to a race. Id cut the number to fit my seatpost and tape it on. I didnt worry about the adhesive because the tape solved it.

Sorry but I don't have a picture but I trim the number to fit on my down tube. If it is not a sticker, I attach it with clear packaging tape. The numbers are usually a bit too high to fit without trimming so I cut off a bit of the top and a bit of the bottom to make it fit. I tape the leading & trailing edge (if done right, I don't need to tape the bottom but I don't think it would hurt). Most races say not to alter the number but I have never been given any trouble (m-dot, non-mdot, US, Europe, whatever). Be sure to have a napkin or dry cloth to wipe off the morning dew from the frame so the tape will stick. If you don't have an aero downtube, I suggest going with the seat post placement.

Trim it down, and use a stapler. Staple it close to the seat tube, and then at the end.

trim to minimum possible size, wrap around seat post as high as possible, tape side of number together with clear packing tape, and secure the whole thing to seat post with electrical tape (peels off cleanly).

Pic of setup from this morning's race:

Cheers, Chris

I cut the numbers out, trim them down and then clear tape it to the frame on the down tube where its thickest near my water bottle cage. I would upload a picture but can't seem to do it on here.
