Doug O’Neill joined the show to break news on Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another.
“I’ll Have Another is officially out of the Belmont,” O’Neill said.
O’Neill talked about what a let-down it is. ”It’s not tragic, but it’s a huge disappointment,” O’Neill said.
O’Neill said he looks fine. He said he will walk the horse in front of the media at his 1 p.m. ET press conference to show everyone that the horse is doing well. But he has the beginning of the injury and they can’t run him.
Dan asked O’Neill if I’ll Have Another has raced his last horse. ”If I had to wager … I would say yes,” O’Neill said.

That stinks, only time of year that I follow horse racing is the three Triple Crown races. Guess we have to wait until next year again.

I know nothing about horse racing myself but a buddy of mine who is big into it and goes to Saratoga Springs almost every weekend during race season says the trainer has a 'checkered' past and could be an excuse for something else.

Any thoughts on this?

Here's the "conspiracy" angle. Many horse people have been commenting that IHA has not looked good since he got to Belmont. That he looked like a tired horse. Then, NYRA announced the unprecedented security rules for this race, vstly restricting a trainer's unsupervised access to his horse for the 3 days leading up to the race. Once that happened, my betting partner and I both predicted IHA was unlikely to reach the starting gate. Why let the horse run tired, without any other "assistance", and have him throw in a clunker in the race that all Breeders want to win. Horsemen and fans want to win the KY Derby, from a breeding standpoint the Belmont may be more lucrative.

So, the horse goes out on top with a leg injury. I believe both Jerry Bailey and Gary Stevens came out today and said they saw nothing wrong with the horse's leg when he left the track this morning and on the backside.

Remember Big Brown? Dutrow has even a longer list of questionable acts. Look what happened to Big Brown in the Belmont. Pulled up and to this day no one has said what was wrong. Except that NY had banned the steroids Dutrow had been feeding him.

Over the past 20-30 years, the American thoroughbred biz has seen a huge shift to breeding large numbers of mares every year to stallions with reputations for questionable soundness.

Used to be that the fast but fragile studs would see maybe 30-40 mares, and that limited the fragility genes to some degree, and now you'll see some stallions with poor reputations for soundness covering 120 or more mares a year.

I used to be a huge thoroughbred racing fan, but too many breakdowns and too many racing careers cut way short by non-fatal injuries cooled my interest in the sport.

I'd much rather take care of 120 mares a year than 30.

OK, I will admit, my conspiracy theory was way off. Sadly, a much sadder story was true....

And when you see that they were able to sell him for $10 million you can certainly see why they were cautious. I think most people see how easy it is to treat injuries in other animals and people and forget how easily a horse can develop massive issues if they have something that forces them to take weight off one leg.

Unfortunately this has not been covered as well as the original article but comes from a well respected racing publication.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/...eatment-routine-care

As a fan of horse racing I hate many aspects of the industry, but I don't think this horse was being mistreated. He looked great on the track when i saw him at the Ky derby. The drugs he was given were pretty routine. One of them, described as a painkiller was really no different than the Baxyl I take for my knees!

If this horse had run and broken down it would have been tragic and the coverage would have been terrible for everyone involved. Images of Eight Belles and Barbaro would have been used over and over again to demonize an entire industry. By not running, this horse will now live in a luxurious farm and do something most men would love to do all day.

My much larger concern is with a horse being sent to a foregign country is if there is a buy back clause in the contract in case of poor breeding record, similar to the sickening history of Ferdinand.

And, just to brag, since this is the only thing I would ever be able to on this website, I had a future wager on this horse in the ky derby. So I had him at much better odds of about 40-1when I picked him in February.

Nice bet. I had Animal Kingdom last year in the futures bet at 30-1 and in exacta wheel. Paid nice.
