If IMH is the "creme de la creme" and the bar is set so high to get in, WHY do so many people crash and burn?
- Many go all-out to get the KQ then, IMH is really a vacation race, for them and the family
- Personally, I think it's unrealistic, for AG athletes to race two all-out IM races (or more) a year. We and the WTC, seem to think this is "normal", but it's far from normal. An all-out IM race effort is extraordinarily taxing on the body.
- Many get completely stressed out about IMH and way under-perform because the stress gets to them
- the IMH bike course is a course for suckers. The terrain and the situation, invites you to go too hard too early. It's so competitive in the swim and the bike, early on, many get sucked in. Many are "done" by the time they reach Hawi on the bike!! Then they hit the head-winds on the return leg!!
- There are Lottery People there too
- The conditions in Hawaii with high heat and humidity are very selective, some go well in this, others don't.

This happned to me.... and also, I put eveything I had into qualifying. I didn't have much desire to bury myself in another IM training block that year. I went 10:57 in Kona... Then I posted a race report on here and had people telling me I didn't deserve to race there with a time like that.

We'll leave how other people get there up for debate. However, you QUALIFIED, you DESERVED to be there, bottom line! Tell all the haters to kiss your non-suntanned ass!

Seriously. I have never seen any Kona athletes distinguish who is a qualifier and who is a lottery entrant, or be dismissive of anyone who is out there racing that day. It might be bitter people online taking shit who say that, but I can say from my experience the competitors at Kona are all there to enjoy the experience and do the best they can regardless of "talent".

Bryan, unfortunately I have personally seen or heard or read on facebook, people chillin', usually at Lava Java, taking "bets" and tallying on every person that runs or bikes by during race week on whether they are a 1-qualifier, 2-roll-down (like that really matters), 3-lottery, 4-other (executive, biggest loser, etc). Kind of sad really.
I like our perspective...train our asses off, grab a spot, and go and have fun there and try to have another great race all while making new friends and positively taking in the whole experience.

x2.
That's been my experience also - from what I've seen there's almost a strange sense of modesty pre-race.
I ran into a couple guys last year at the Trek booth - started chatting and it finally comes up that one of the guys is a sub 9 AGer. Same experience at the slowtwitch party - another sub 9 AGer, but you wouldn't know it in the first 5 minutes of the conversation.
Some seriously fast dudes, but no questions came up regarding anyone's "talent".

I wouldn't mind meeting you and Bryan at Kona one day. In two times there, I've experienced both sides of the fence. Latest trip was most spiritually fulfilling, met a lot of great people, really enjoyed myself and so did the family, and to top it off had a pretty good day.

Deal! Bryan and I are already in this year. Any chance you can get there this year still?!?! If not, we'll just have to make a pact or maybe a three man wolf pack that starts as a one man wolf.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
