my wife and i are going there to see some family and we are going to take a day to do something alone.any good ideas specific to the area? we thought about marths's vinyard but my wife says its 1 1/2 ride one way by ferry so forget that.last time we where there we went to newport ate lunch,looked at the giant houses and walked around at a few beaches.we are looking to do something new to do.if we cant think of anything else we will just go to block island.thanks

you can also go to Battleship Cove in Fall River ,Mass. Its about 15 miles east of Providence on I-195 .Theres a couple retired battleships to tour and a lot of restaurants.

Check if they are having "waterfire" while you are there - if so, go and eat from the vendors. Go to a nicer Italian dinner on Federal Hill. Window shop /people watch on Thayer street. If you go to block island, bring your bike - mountain or hybred over road.

Block Island is one of my favorite places on the planet, absolutely great spot.

Got married in Newport, also a great town and never get tired of visiting there.

I know MA better than RI, but the Providence Zoo isn't too bad. Had a nice day there several years ago. Southern MA has some good beaches if you want a nice beach day - Horseneck Beach is one of my favorites, but I haven't been there in 20 years. Lots of good state parks in MA too with mountain biking options (Miles Standish is one, but that might be a bit far away for you). You're close to Cape Cod too - lots of options there.
