Gatorskins blow giant donkey penis in the rolling resistance department. Your friends are recommending them to you because they want to beat you, or, on the off-chance that they do actually have gatorskins on their race wheels you should proceed with the following course of action:
1. Laugh silently at them. They are what we in the business call "idiots."
2. Do not, under any circumstances tip them off that there are wheels out there that have close to HALF the Crr, while still providing acceptable puncture protection.
3. Buy a Vittoria CX Tubular or Open Tubular.
4. Beat your friends, and do it by a large enough margin that you can't attribute your victory to equipment alone.
5. Going forward, ignore any advice they give to you concerning triathlon. Remember, they are idiots.

For training, I use the Grand Prix 4 seasons and for racing, I use the Michelin Pro Race 4s

the Conti 4000S is a great all around tire. you could race on it and only give up a couple watts to the best tires, and it's tough enough to use as your daily trainer. so, if your race wheels are your training wheels, and you want one set of tires- this is the one.

and don't forget the latex tubes.

He's probably running a clincher wheelset if he's using Gatorskins.

The Vittoria "Open Tubular" is a clincher tire.
I was just mounting my Zipp Tangente "Open Tubulars" (made by Vittoria) on my clincher rims.

I always have liked Michelin Pro race tires. Overall pretty fast, not too expensive and never had any problems with flats.
Just got some Zipp Tangentes, which seem like they will be really fast, but seem like they might be a little prone to flats. We'll see this weekend.....

I've always liked Mich ProRace as good, do everything tires.

But I'm on the Conti 4000S now, and I like them even better.
Seem to roll fast, and also seem more durable that Michelins.
I'm a fan.

For racing, I use Bonty R4 aero front, and RXL Pro rear.
They are not the most durable things in the world, so racing only, but very few clinchers roll faster.
They are also very much not cheap.

So - value-wise, 4000S in a landslide.

This. x1000. But yes, Gatorskins are probably more puncture resistant, but they are slow. I guess it depends on what matters more to you.

I'm just curious, but what kind of bike/wheels do you have? If you've already spent a good chunk on a carbon frame and aero wheels, it's worth spending an extra $140 for 4000s'. Personally, I'm running the Grand Prix TT on a pair of S60s.

Someone did the math, and I believe that on a half ironman or even an ironman you'll come in with a faster bike split if you ride a Vittoria, flat, and replace it, than if you ride gatorskins and don't flat. Doesn't surprise me at all. Rolling resistance is on the order of 20-40W depending on the tire. That is not an insignificant amount of power dissipation.

The thing is that there are fast and slow options at each price point. The fastest tires aren't necessarily the most expensive, and the slowest tires aren't necessarily the least expensive. The sad thing is to see people spend tons of money on low TPI tires like Tufos and race them anywhere other than velodromes/speedways.

Check out the AFM Tire Tests. The most recent one is from 2010, but tires also don't really change a lot, so most of the tires you can buy today are on this list...Conti Ultra 2000 is listed as ~20W/wheel, the best clinchers are ~12W/wheel.

From the chart you reference the difference from the best to worst is 13 watts per tire and that's on rollers, where did 40W come from?

Re: Your .02 on best race tires [jaretj] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

The 20-40w seems high, but don't forget that the values in the AFM chart need to be multiplied by 1.5 for "real-world" conditions. I did not do this myself, but there have been many posts from reliable ST posters with the field-test data to support the 1.5 factor.

So....13 per tire x 1.5 = about 20w per tire, then 2 tires = 40w.

Here are a couple of references:

And read this, especially posts 101, 105 and 124:

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...ield%20test;#2756914

It was mentioned in many threads over the past few years so I'm sure if you wanted more back-up you could search for more.

Maybe 1.5 is an optimistic estimation, but based on the above, 1.3-1.5 is a realistic "real-world" conversion.

GP 4000 is great in clincher or tubular form. They feel like they roll pretty fast, handle well, and I'm willing to give up a touch of rolling resistance for flat protection. They do wear realtively fast, but if this is a race only tire, they should be fine.

The GP4000 with black tread wears fast? It lasts longer than any tire I've used.

The Supersonic is for racing.

The tubulars seem to wear down pretty fast for me. I haven't ridden the clincher in awhile, so I can't comment.

Finally a post on tire selection! Why this hasn't been covered before in multiple posts on a biweekly basis is a complete surprise to me.

Also, has anyone heard about Flo Wheels? They look interesting.

When you talk to your triathlon buds do you limit yourselves only to subjects that you have never before discussed? Or do you like me and my friends re hash the same stuff over and over....

Did some one force you to open, read and respond to this thread? Is your screen set up so that you cannot see the topic?

I am sitting in an airport waiting on a delayed flight and feeling a bit testy!

I really like the Vittoria Corsa Evo Slick. It's the closest tire I can find to the now discontinued Specialized S-Works Mondo Open Tubular.

That's pretty much my race tire now for Tri's and Road Races.

For straight TT's, I run the above, or a Specialized tire as I have stocked up before they discontinued, in the back in a 23 and a Conti Supersonic 20mm in the front.

For training I ride the 4000s all the time. Love that tire.

If I asked the same question to my friends every week they would probably punch me in the throat. Why we need a new post on the same topic concerning the same tires over and over again is nothing but forum masturbation. Now stop trying to lure pilots into the mens room.

Yeah man I'm sorry you seem to have too much time on your hands - I mean really I feel as though every other post fits my situation exactly so why not just ride a bike that doesn't fit and buy whatever tires are on the shelf at Walmart. Yeah I'm wrong b/c I thought this was a place to ask questions and get answers...apparently it's only for the professionals and great people like you.

Everyone else thank you for the info and .02
