Phelps signed up for the 400 free at Mesa. Be interesting to see what he can do, if he swims it.

Something that has always puzzled me about swimming--seems like younger folks are better at endurance racing. Teenagers often post fast times in distance events but more rarely in the sprint events. Older folks can stay competitive in sprints longer than distance. I haven't pulled up any numbers just something I noticed. It's strange to me because running is just the opposite--distance runners peak past 30 while sprinters careers are done. You have any thoughts on this?

I think it has something to do with the monster yardage required to stay competitive in distance swimming. In running, you can vary your workouts, run outdoors, run with training partners, etc. Also with the inevitable shoulder injuries and burn-out that plague swimmers, it's just very difficult to maintain the fitness you need to be competitive at an elite level. Runners get injured, too, of course, but the shoulder is a nuanced joint that doesn't respond well to repeated injury and multiple surgeries.

I also think that sprinting is harder on the body in runners, whereas it's easier on the body in swimmers.

Worth a bump... credit to the OP for calling him out, and to Horton for living up to the potential.

Good call on both counts. I was thinking about this thread earlier today too.

It might be the fastest 15 year old time in the world. He should get his feet wet at worlds next year and the contend at Commonwealths in 2014 and the 2016 Rio games.

Wow, you really called it back in 2012 about Rio. Well done!
