I used this method to come back from hip replacement. 1minute, 2minutes, three minutes. Took a longgg time just to work up to a mile.
Yes I know that your not supposed to run. Body doesn't like no running.

My wife did it this year with great results. Running was the only training my wife could fit in due to work. 5th place age group Timberman

Very early stages for me - BUT - have never ran with such consistency as I do now. Could trace every injury I ever had back to ramping up run mileage before educating myself on the subject. I'm hoping its the plan that gets me to a half decent IM marathon.

There is often a look of puzzlement on my colleagues faces though when I return from my lunchtime run after just 6 minutes, always share the plan to those who are interested as I hear so much positive feedback on it.

I have been following the BarryP running plan since Thanksgiving. I don't really know what I was doing before..... Thanks BarryP for some clarity!!! Last year I never ran more than 20-25 miles per week. I am now up to 34 per week and shooting for 40-45 avg through the season. I have a 8k in a couple weeks that I ran last year and am hoping for serious gains even without speed work.
Has anyone improved their run times long term (over a season or many seasons of training) and if so by how much? And with how much training ?
I would be happy to read some old threads if there are some.

Thanks again BarryP!!!

I was in the same boat last year. Usually never more than 20 and stayed injured going hard every workout. This year I ran 30-35 almost every week, almost all easy, and I'm just shy of 1500 miles for the year. Only tempo workouts were stand-alone races. I've hit the track twice for speedwork.

Before I started BarryP late last year, my best 5k was 20:00, with a 43:30 10k, and a 1:43 open half from 2010.

Last weekend I went 18:15 in a 5k. Earlier this year I went 39:50 in a 10k, and a 1:27 open half. Not ST fast but I'll take it. More importantly I enjoy running again.

Plenty of people would love those running times. Nice work..

I am incorporating this in my training as of this week, so very early days for me.

Yes... a 15 minute run can seem short, but it's better than sitting at home with sore achilles :)

I am a big believer in the BarryP, but still managed to screw things up. My IT band flared up four months into my BarryP. The plantar fascia forced me to convert from 20mph over 4 runs into 15mpw over 6 in late June. Built that to 25mpw over six days (2.5/5.0/2.5/5.0/2.5/7.0) as of November 1. Ran 6 days per week each and every week between. Everything was zone 1 or zone 2...nice and easy. Bam! Hello IT band. Been on the shelf since Nov 1 trying to get the IT band right.

Working on ART, hip strength and flexibility now, and will get it going again in December.

Still, the BP had me feeling better than I have in years. I think I've just ignored my hip/core strength for too long and need to get that right in order to have success under any program. And consistent volume will be a fundamental part of that program.

Not BarryP's program, but a similar one that emphasized consistency. Went from 1:20:28->1:15:12 in the half marathon.

So I have been reading through this and would like to try it out. I have read the articles, but I would love to see someone's plan spelled out. I'm having a hard time putting it all together. Has someone mapped the phases out that could share their workouts?

Let's start with a question. How many miles per week are you currently running? We'll build a BarryP plan for you from that point on.

Sweet! A bit of background. I have done IMSG the last two years and both times ramped mileage to fast while training. I averaged 25 mpw in this years training and my long week was 48. Running is my weak spot. I can guarantee this is due to lack of consistency and brainwashing myself into ramping to fast. I did a standalone half marathon at the end of September (my first ever running race, have only done tri) and ran 1:48. My goal was to be under 1:50, so I was happy with that. I shut everything down after that race to work on IT band issues, and started last week on daily runs of 2 miles or so.
I am not racing IM next year, and will be doing my first marathon the 3rd week of May. I feel that I could safely handle 12-15 mpw right now, and would like to focus on slowly building base. I plugged my half mary time into McMillan's calculator and plan on using the results as my pace guide. I have convinced myself that slower will be safer and my ego should be ok with that now!
Hopefully that helps. I really would love some input as to making a good plan. Y'all are the best!

First off, BarryP's plan calls for an athlete to run 6 days per week. If you're not going to run 6 days per week, then you aren't doing BarryP's plan.

Second, he wants you to alternate easy run days and workout run days, plus one weekly long run. A Barry P week consists of:

A) 3 short & easy runs
B) 2 medium length workout runs
C) 1 long run.

How about starting off with the following:

A) 3 x 2 mile short & easy runs
B) 2 x 4 mile medium length workout runs
C) 1 x 6 mile long run.

Every couple of weeks, increase your total miles by about 10% (spread out evenly throughout the week). Do that until about 12 weeks before your marathon. At that point, you can pick up a marathon training plan.

I suggest you look at either the Hanson or Phitzger plans when you are ready to run 40-60 miles per week as part of a marathon training cycle.

52 min marathon improvement Sunday to finish @ 3:30:18. Even split the sucker at 1:45:09, 1:45:09. Not all that fast, but i'm big coming in at 228lbs. I think the high frequency running was a huge factor in making it injury free to the start AND finish.
