Whistler -> Lillooet part II
A few of us did a Whistler -> Lillooet ride a couple of years back, and had a blast: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=1921911

To recap, Alexia kicked all of our asses. :p

I'm thinking of doing it again on Sunday June 6th, as the final stage in my prep for the KRAC tour.

Anyone care to join in the "fun"?

That sounds like a blast!

How does the ascent compare to Cypress or Seymour? Those and Baker are my only real benchmarks for long climbs, I know I could do them now although I'd be slow and it would hurt.

I'm seriously considering it.

The date isn't set in stone... could be a week earlier or later (I leave on the 19th).

DRIVE SAG??? WTF?!

You've been on your bike a LOT more than I have, girl!

<edit> - Oh. I get it now. Duh...

Yes - he's in no matter what.

I'm guessing he'll be the last one to lose contact with you... :p

Harder and longer than anything local, but still totally doable. I got off to rest for a spell at least twice on that climb up Mt Currie.

Dude, give the straight goods: 21k with the first 10k or so at 13% grade. It's a brutal climb. Rode the standard crankset last time - would only do it again with a compact!

I don't remember the actual details - but the ride profile is in the link (see original post)

<edit> - looks like it gains 1100m in ~13km...

You guys are so full of shit...

Don't get me wrong I like to climb but... it's a brutal hill. That said if I can swing it I'll be back ;-)

And to think, before the ride last year you were thinking of bringing the clown bike...

I'll be on the touring rig. The 6-odd weeks in between now and then will decide whether I do the ride loaded or not. :p

I'm tempted to do this ride, but 10K at 13%, yikes. I've done Seymour a few times and Baker as well. but this sounds like.....fun!

The first 10k or so is brutal. It does ease up haha but it's like doing Cypress twice..

I think the grade is steeper than Cypress. Cypress has never forced me to stand.

you make a good point - plus the need to slolom (sp?) across the road - those first few K are the worst, for sure...

Thanks for the post Khai. I haven't been on the forum much in the last couple of months. My focus has been ultra trail running. I'm now really enjoying my bike again though. Spring is the best time of year to ride here in Texas. I will not be in Whistler this year until June 16th. I am full of envy over this ride though! It was so beautiful and challenging. I have a friend coming up July 02 and we may do the ride by ourselves since we will miss your date. If anyone else wants to do it with us, more than welcome. Post me and I will give a firm date. It's epic!!!

Looks like the entire route was mapped in Google street view late last summer (judging by the smoke haze and evidence of fire around Lillooet). It also appears they were fixing the road where some of you almost lost it on the descent into Lillooet.
http://maps.google.ca/...45,0.208569&z=13

It's a neat tool for previewing the road surface.

If you go again, ride safe.

Wow - that's really awesome - thanks Sharon! It never dawned on me that Google would have run a carcam up that highway... Very cool. :)

(and yes, that is the bend where the road just dropped 4-6'' to gravel without warning :p)

It looks like they haven't repaired that fairly sketchy part of the highway descending Mt Currie out to Duffy Lake - which is the part where I'd advocate anyone riding to exercise the most caution: http://maps.google.ca/...015&t=h&z=12

Still, an unbelievable ride! Google StreetView just makes me want to go now!

That climb to Joffrey lake is a killer. I've done it a couple of times over the last few summers - from W to Pemberton to the top of the climb and back to W. The base goes from flat to 13% is the blink of an eye. And then stays there. Really tough stuff. Never continued to Lilloet though - only ever done the drive from L to W. I'd need a support car to get me back from Lilloet, I think.

Longer, but more mellow, is W to Pemberton to Darcy back to W. That's c 160km. Certainly makes those grinders from Pemberton back to W hurt...!

Well folks, June is drawing nearer. I think Andy & Jen weren't available on the 6th, so how's the following weekend? I could make it happen on the 12th or 13th. May 30th is an option as well. That's the Memorial Day weekend, so if Erin/Dave/Jen/any other Americans were interested in coming up that might make it easier...

Who's in, and what are your preferred dates?
