The CAD sketch:
The finished product:
Ring is 6-4 titanium with a black carbon anodizing. It was made by the folks at TitaniumRings.com. The dimpling pattern is a custom design by joshatzipp. He did three designs for me, each based on an existing dimpling pattern from one of Zipp's wheels. He tweaked each design and mapped it onto the CAD file for the ring, and then I got to pick. It's pretty dang cool.
The "part number" is one I made up -
Z
ipp
T
itanium
7
mm (width of the ring)
W
edding
R

I always race with my wedding band on but was considering ditching it because of the drag. This Zipp Band would be a great "race day" band to wear! Where can we get them??? Size 10. My wife is a size 5.25.

Very cool, Jordan. We have looked at rings, but stopped, as we didn't see something unique. These are great. Do both you guys get a cut? New marketing skills....rings for triathletes.

If some other folks actually want them, I think the people at titaniumrings.com might be able to make them. But I don't know, since the whole pattern is based around my ring size - 7.5 - and the width I wanted. I don't know how the pattern would change with a bigger (or smaller) size. But I am sure it wouldn't be too hard. Just need to increase the number of dimples. If you are really interested, send me an email, and I'll put you in touch with them.

That's too funny. When I got married in Sept I purchased my wedding ring from titanium-buzz.com. It is 6mm wide ti, with the middle 4mm containing an inlayed carbon fiber weave.

Won't that ring now reduce the drag on your left side catch, causing you to swim in a counter-clockwise direction in open water?
You'll need one right to balance.

So what happens when Zipp discovers a new way to make their wheels faster and ditches dimples? Does your wife get to trade you in for a newer model? ;-)

Reminds me a bit of my own wedding ring. I got my wedding ring from Boone (

I actually got mine at Kay jewelers and it is silver. It looks "beat" with little dings all over, but not like yours. That is a great idea

Really cool Jordan, from one geek to another, :-) Also congrats on getting hitched. Just make sure its a nice snug fit if you plan on racing with it. I lost my first one in the cold waters of Lake Springfield during the Ironhorse, the wife said if she had to get me a third one it was going through my nose!

I need to really grease my finger with soap or lotion to even have a prayer of getting it off, and even then, it takes serious effort. So hopefully that means it will stay put.

Jordan-
Soak your hand in a bowl of 50ish degree water. That'll tell you if it's tight enough to actually swim with. I lost my very tight ring in low-60 degree water on an open water swim in the Gulf of Mexico, and my second ring in mid-60 degree water in Morse Lake in Indiana in June. Both rings would not come off without "assistance" otherwise.
Very cool idea though...

If you ever get hitched, you are totally going to have Sacha White do a Vanilla wedding ring. And don't you deny it.

Can't wait to get one! I have a Ti wedding ring now. I was going to get an anodized one but the down fall is that if it gets scratched you can not buff it out. I have the standard raw finish, I scratched it and went to a local Golf pro shop and used their buffing wheel to get it looking like new.

Apparently this coating, which they call "black diamond," but which I am assuming is a carbon-zirconium coating, can't get scratched. I'm not going to test it, though. But it's not, AFAIK, a traditional anodizing. I.e., you can see that it has a gloss, rather than the typical flat black of an anodized part. At first, I thought I would have preferred the matte black of a traditional anodizing, but this has a very cool sort of "gunmetal" color to it. Very different than a true black, which is different than what I expected, which is taking some getting used to. It was hard to know what to expect, even seeing the CAD sketch, because being a total custom job I couldn't see sample. It's an amazing piece of machining work when you see it up close.

First....that ring is awesome! I love it.
I am also a member of the cold water wedding ring loss club. Of course, mine was in water that was barely above freezing, whitewater kayaking on the Tellico River in January. Water temp was probably below 40 degrees, air temp in the 20s, 4 inches of snow on the gound and more coming down, and lost my paddle in the middle of a Class IV rapid. I had to hand roll up, and when I came up it was honestly the first thing I noticed.....wedding ring gone! We had probably been married about 6 months.
Other than that, I have raced in mine quite a bit in the summer, but I take it off if it is a wetsuit swim. I have a friend whose ring is near impossible to get off under normal conditions, and he tapes his when in cold water. Just something to think about. You wouldn't want to lose that thing!

Looking for a ring myself, considering carbon/Ti. One note tho - if you crush your hand, they won't be able to cut the ring off - too hard and requires special tools.
Of course, maybe it would prevent your finger from getting crushed!
