*****BREAKING NEWS***** Chrissie Wellington Parts Ways With Simon Lessing
Can't Post
Just saw this over at Triathlete mag website.
Triathlete Magazine
has confirmed that two-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington has severed her coaching relationship with Simon Lessing.
“She’s going to have to figure out what she wants to do. You’ll need to ask her,” Lessing said in a phone interview. Lessing would not comment further.
Formerly a member of TeamTBB and coached by Brett Sutton through her second victory in Kona in 2008, she initially left the team to work with Cliff English, coach of Sam McGlone, but in December announced she would be working with Lessing, former ITU world champion and one of the most successful Olympic-distance racers in triathlon history.
This news comes just weeks after her record-breaking performance at Quelle Challenge Roth, and just a few months before she reaches the shores of Hawaii to challenge her title for a third time.
Check back in for more information as this continuing story develops.

I do not think that would happen. I think she is past TBB but is a bit of a lost soul right now.

Unless you are a close personal friend or a shrink of Ms. Wellington it seems silly to make such a judgement.

I will say this potentially makes her loss at 5430 more interesting. On the surface it seemed just like a "C" race that she trained right through. But maybe not... Of course, that is based in absolutely nothing except the seemingly inherent human desire to watch drama unfold.

Can you think of some general reasons why a top level pro, like Chrissie, who is having such a great season might make a switch this late in the season?
Chrissie has more than nailed her big/A races this season so can't think why there's been a parting of ways w/her coach. So just hoping w/your insight as a pro you could offer some possible reasoning.
Thanks!

I do not think so. She had great success with TBB and moved on. Still having great success with maybe a small setback (if you can call second place a setback) but changing coaches a couple times in one year to me looks like she is looking for something that maybe she can not find.

She only lost b/c Julie drilled the first loop of the bike and opened up a pretty sizable gap. Chrissie was down 5:10 at the half way point of the run and made up almost 4 minutes in 6.55 miles. She was flying on the run. She got outswam and out biked - and I think she signed up last minute so I think it was a pretty low key race for her. Of course you'd like to win every time out, but Dibbens is pretty damn fast too! I wish people would give her some credit. She had an outstanding race.

She is just getting nervous now that the other women in the sport have finally stepped up their game. I saw this coming since Keat outran her which was pretty impressive considering Wellington calls herself a runner.

It isn't like she lost my much though. Barely 2 minutes And the women that beat had an outstanding bike.
People talk like there is no way she could possibly lose any race...ever. I think anyone who has ever trained knows, there are up days and down days. If you think you can predict when those will be, you (the collective you, not the Jordan You) should be buying lottery tickets. :)

I would be interested in Rappstar's take on this as well in a bit more detailed reply. I can only imagine that it is difficult going from TBB to a new coach.

The Shack but not be far off. Carmichael's group have some big names like Alexander. The team Sutton team is short lived. Sutton sort of makes them and when they are establihed can't afford them.

I don't know that I really have any great insight. Lessing's brief comment on "deciding what she wants" is interesting, but clearly doesn't have much context. I'd wager, certainly, that this wasn't a decision made because of 5430 (i.e., I certainly would have said even going into the race that Julie Dibens was/is capable of beating her over the 70.3 distance). Athletes change coaches for any number of reasons. Some intelligent. Some not so much. We'll probably know on Oct. 11 which category this falls into. Everything at this point is speculation.
My own personal take is that, with some exceptions, I don't think that folks who were high level elite athletes make good coaches for high level elite athletes. Generally speaking, I think there is too much of a personal bias. I.e., "what worked for me is what will work for you." The number of examples where this is the case are much more legion than the cases where it is not. How this manifests itself in terms of conflict can be any number of things - ranging from training to recovery to diet to emotional support. Speaking on a totally personal level, I don't think if I were the two-time defending Kona champ that I'd make myself the first high level athlete (besides himself/herself) that someone coached. It's not that I don't think Simon is/could be a good coach. I just don't know that if I were in the position that Chrissy were in that I'd want to take that risk. Maybe she decided something similar. Maybe not.
One thing I've learned is that outward appearances, especially among athletes, can be very deceiving. The seemingly most confident grounded people are often not. And those who seem totally disorganized are often extremely meticulous. And, of course, training magnifies all of these things.

"Lessing's brief comment on "deciding what she wants" is interesting"
Perhaps she's still contemplating the whole ITU/Olympics thing.... That would seem to be a distractor to her current career trajectory.... a "decision" that would have to be made, so to speak.
100% pure speculation...nothing more.

In any sport, continuity of the program seems to correlate highly with successful outcomes. Lessing's comments coupled with the fact that Ms Wellington has now changed coaches three times in one calendar year by my count indicate she is at a bit of a loss for direction right now. At Kona this year it may not matter much, but one has to believe that any woman willing to raise her game may not find Wellington so invincible at the 140.6 distance much longer. Of course someone actually needs
to beat her
at that distance first! So far dozens have tried and all have failed. Wellington is such a sparkling talent and personality that I hope she figures it out in time for, oh, about another 15 IM wins around the world before she is through.
