The cholesterol medicine thread brought up a similar question I'd like to ask. Is anyone on beta blockers or similar medicine to control heart rate, and if so, how do they affect your training?
I've been having heart rate issues since October and doctors have yet been able to figure out why. My HR when running/biking is going through the roof at paces which were previously ok for me (i.e. running about 2-3 minutes/mile slower at same HR and biking ~3mph slower). My resting heart rate has increased as well. I suspected overtraining in fall, and took some time completely off and then came back very slowly, keeping everything in Z2 or lower, but the HR issues are still there and the cardiologist doesn't necessarily think it is overtraining...but has no idea what it may be. I have a feeling that if they can't figure it out after too long, they may put me on medicine to help regulate it. I have heard that beta blockers can make you feel just miserable, and I'm not too interested in feeling miserable, but I'd also like to think one day I may be able to run faster than 12-13 min/miles again as well. Biking under 15 mph isn't a lot of fun either...that is going to make a lot of time on the bike this spring training for CDA.
(Echocardiogram apparently shows a heart that is strong and healthy, one of an athlete that should be more efficient than most...so the dr is even more perplexed. Tested my adrenaline levels and did a CT scan of adrenal glands and they all look good too. Currently waiting on cortisol test results and may do autonomic testing next.)
