Santa Clara deputy sheriff's car hits and kills 2 bicyclists

(03-09) 14:37 PDT CUPERTINO -- Two bicyclists were killed, and a third hospitalized with major injuries, after they were struck by a Santa Clara County sheriff's patrol car today on Stevens Canyon Road in Cupertino, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened at 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Ricardo Road, said CHP Officer Tracy Hoover. At least one of the bicyclists was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. The names of the dead and injured were withheld, as was the name of the deputy sheriff driving the squad car.
Stevens Canyon Road has been shut down in both directions, from Balboa Road to the Steven Creek reservoir, due to the ongoing investigation, Hoover said. No other details were released.

Some of the closest and fastest passes I've had by cars have been cop cars. This pisses me off to no end.

I was clipped by a cop car's side mirror last year. He didn't stop.

yep. i was once almost cleaned out by a motorcycle cop who pulled an illegal u-turn.

i've had a cop yell at me to get off the road and stop holding up traffic, when i was legally riding with traffic!

this is sad.

More info in that link - says that the cops' car was going north, crossed the double yellow line and hit the cyclists who were heading south. Amazing. How tragic.

He took 4th in the crit yesterday. I had no idea it was the last time I'd ever see him. He was a genuinely nice guy.

It doesn't look all that narrow. How could they guy have crossed that far over in a road of that width. Am I missing something?

I've ridden that stretch of road hundreds of times as it is just a few miles from the store and my house too. There's a pretty good shoulder but I could see an accident happen there depending on the circumstances and speed involved.

That's terrible. Commiserations.

I don't know if it's the nice weather or something else but the driving down here today has been truly attrocious, far worse than usual. I had to spend half my ride covering the brakes. You'd hope for (although maybe not expect) better from the cops though.

That's awful! My condolences to the victims, their families, friends, and teammates.

I've ridden on Stevens Canyon many times when visiting my parents out in the bay area. Although windy, the road is very wide, it is well marked and the traffic is generally pretty light. I can't imagine how this could possibly happen in broad daylight.

They need to make an example out of him, and every other driver who kills. I don't care about the whole "live with it for the rest of their lives" arguement. I'm sick of reading sad stories like this. Change needs to happen before others pay for it with their lives.

I'm deeply sorry for everyone's losses, and hope that they may be a catalyst for change.

Because the third injured riders name was not released I took it out.

From the fourth rider:

All,
Just a few words to let everyone know how I am doing. I am Ok
physically, but feel quite messed up in the head. Words cannot
describe the accident scene, I thought that I was in a nightmare the
whole time. This is what happened from my side - we were a team of
four, Matt, Kristy, ******** and myself were heading towards the
Stevens Creek reservoir as a team. The other 3 put around 20 seconds
on me before the last stretch to the reservoir. When I took the
corner, it was a horror scene. The sheriff officer got out of his car
and was pacing up and down not quite knowing what to do. I could see
that Matt was fatally hit and ********* was hurt, but, concious and
yelling in pain. Kristy was in bad shape, I stayed with her and
encouraged her to keep breathing until the paramedics took over.
There was another cyclist on scene who happened to be a doctor - when
he asked the cop what hapenned, he said, "I must have dozed off...".
Thank you all for the support. I feel like we should get together as a
team to talk about this, it would definitely help me.

The problem with improving road conditions for cyclists (3-foot laws, etc.) is that they always get cut because car drivers are all, "OMG, don't inconvenience me!"

Such a sad story, this one. Best wishes to the families of those involved.
