ALRIGHT EVERYONE, QUIT YOUR ENDLESS YAPPING ABOUT WHEEL SELECTION, INJURIES AND LANCE SO WE CAN TALK ABOUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT. IT'S AN HONOR FOR YOU TO READ WHAT I HAVE TO SAY, SO SHUT UP AND GIVE ME THE RESPECT I DESERVE. DARK MARK, @PAY10DEEP AND MYSELF ARE DOING SOMETHING AMAZING TO RAISE AWARENESS. AWARENESS THAT ANDREW MISTAKE AND HIS CRONIES ARE A BUNCH OF GREEDY ASSHOLES.

WE HAVE ALREADY RAISED $275 FOR THE 7TH PLACE FINISHERS OF IRONMAN LAKE PLACID. IN A SEPARATE AWARDS CEREMONY, WE WILL GIVE THEM A GIANT CHECK AND A KICK ASS TROPHY.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS. http://www.gofundme.com/bdsgjs

Maybe the WTC can take some of the funds earned via the Refund program and funnel them into prize purses.

Pretty cute that gluten tolerant thing. As a father of a child with celiac disease who gets to see what her life is like living around people like you, I really would like to introduce you to her so you can tell her how funny your little joke is. Yeah. That's really cool.

Shut up!! I didn't take time out of my busy schedule so I could be criticized by some intolerant whiner. We are trying to change the sport and help less fortunate professional triathletes.

Just like a typical triathlete, you've found a way to make this all about you. Newsflash: the world doesn't revolve around you.

Who cares what some "consider" a gluten intolerance?

Some people consider IMLP a semi-tough bike ride surrounded by an easy run and a pool swim so giving any prize money at all seems unnecessary to begin with.

Nor does it revolve around 7th place but that is for another thread. I am a bit confused. Your site says it will pay 7th place for men and women. Your goal for this is stated at $2,000 on the web site. That is $1,000 each (minus fees, if any). 6th is getting $750. I guess I am confused on your math and distribution you spelled out.

7th would pay more than 6th if we meet our goal. It could pay more than 1st if we blow it out of the water.

Why apologize? People have to look so far into things when all they are trying to do is prove how cheap WTC is. I would live it if 7th got more than first, the winnings are a joke. If it wasn't for sponsors the local bowling team would make more than the winners.

And I am sure this was aimed directly at those with celiacs...

Does it cost over a $1000 to print a big check? We've already raised that much. You obviously don't understand the power of The Real Starky.

Nobody on the list is in Kona territory with the exception of Kyle Buckingham, and he is only in that area code if he wins. They can chase Kona points all they want, but they better be prepared to pull out the sword again soon at IM Boulder, IMMT, Louisville or the couple of others IMs in August.

But this Nitwit seems to be the only person in triathlon with a personality, ill donate to the cause of the "underprivileged".

Why don't pros who can get 7th & not paid by WTC race Challenge events, jump the shark a few spots with watered down pro fields and get paid more than winner at LP by finishing 5th, or 3rd or win all together & get paid substantially more?

As Clinton said "it's arithmetic"

Apparently many pros are as stupid as us age groupers.

Can't we just bypass all the fundraising and just give the pros money from WTC? In fact, let's not even make them race. After all, they are pros and they do for a living what the rest of us do for fun. Seriously, they are the sport, right? I mean without the pros, there'd be like only 2490 people in a given race instead of 2500. Then the rest of us would be left arguing over who gets the best spots for transition and which age-group wave gets in the water first. They really are doing the rest of us a favor by competing.

My unemployed friend with a useless degree in Fine Arts thinks fundraising somebody else's life choice is a stupid idea.

My idea, on the other hand, is to sell wristbands to bring attention to the poor-pro-triathlete cause. I'll be selling them at IMLP so be on the lookout for me. I recommend you buy more than one and be sure to wear them on the bike (that way, you'll be less aero than me and I'll have a shot at that 7th place prize.) If I win it, though, be prepared. I'm going to donate the winnings back to WTC.

As Clinton said "it's arithmetic"

Apparently many pros are as stupid as us age groupers.

Challenge Atlantic City paid 10 deep, 4 females finished the race. Lifetime Minneapolis paid 6 deep and again only 7 females were in that race, I think about 10 for the men. The series has a 50,000 BONUS as well, yet hardly any pros race with them.

WTC is a corporation, not an association, they are not here to provide for the pros, they are here to do business, Professional triathletes keep on forgetting this and not realizing it. Then there is the value component, you are paid what you are worth. Rev 3 found more value in pros and many pros did not find value in more prize purses w/o Kona points. Listen to Messick and Charlie's interviews this spring. Andrew is a smart man, this "movement" will do nothing at all, in fact he is probably watching thinking great, they will take it on themselves to pay the pros.

So what happens when that male or female in sixth pulls up to take 7th for more money. Don't triathletes do this sport for the love of competition and not money? Think we might have built a scenario where we see them once again talk with their feet and not their mouths.

So what happens when a Pro Triathlete can't do what they love because they can't pay their bills? This could be deemed a bit of a deterrent for future athletes, no?

The far right answer is they have to quit, but is that what Ironman wants to be about?

Basing your main income of prize money is stupid. Many professional triathletes do just fine because they realize that they have to have supplemental income as well. They realize that their value is extended outside of prize money and they can use that in other avenues to make an income.

And don't give me this can't work because I train so much BS, many other sports have the same situation and those athletes are willing to work outside of their training.

Where I live all but one of the local pros 5-6 total work other jobs either in the sport, outside the sport, or have a couple "odd" jobs to make it work. Non of them work off prize purses and are all very successful, including Ironman winners.

You have good points, but why not make it better? Is it stupid the PGA Tour pays millions of dollars in prize money to their members?

It seems all that model has done is draw more attention and sponsors to the sport and, more importantly, get kids playing golf because they can be a millionaire if they make top 125 per year. That's why golf boomed. Imagine what that could do for the growth of Ironman?

Food for thought only, maybe I'm wrong.(?)

This is a publicity stunt. It is meant to be absurd. Absurdity draws eyeballs and attention to the fact that Andrew Mistake and WTC are a bunch of greedy assholes.

Golf and triathlon are not comparable.

PGA charges spectators to attend events.

PGA is broadcast, they even have a golf channel. Ironman is streamlined online for those that are aware.

Golf courses are everywhere, triathlon courses are up for 24 hours.

PGA is an association. WTC is a corporation. Big difference

Kids don't play golf to be rich, kids play gold because it is prevalent everywhere. Yes it isn't cheap but you don't have the limitations that triathlon has. Both golf and triathlon have been around since I was born (1984) but I played golf for a few years as a kid, never heard of triathlon for quite awhile.

Welcome to 2012 when Messick stepped in. You're a bit late...

Everyone knows about the greedy of WTC. This stunt and everything else you have done has shown no changes with WTC

Nice job on the trademark, wouldn't want anyone stealing your identity ;)

I disagree, both are professional sports. Triathlon is where golf was 60 years ago. You could almost argue that Age Groupers are paying the spectator entry fees but ag'ers get to compete with the pros.

No kid that starts playing a sport for money. Money is what sports psychologists call a secondary motivator. But, once desire and talent collide, kids start dreaming of making a living in a professional sport. Why don't we simply help feed it in triathlon?

I agree with your assessment of the PGA Tour being an association vs a corporation. And, I'm good with capitalism which is WTC. Andrew Messick seems to be a staunch, intelligent business man who is a master at growing a brand and revenue. All I'm saying is in the long run, there's more ways for him to make more money once the purses increase. Then and only then will Triathlon grow to its fullest potential.

Hell, what do I know anyways?

It's also more conducive to being a spectator sport. I was just pointing out that being a for profit corporation is not necessarily the reason for low purses.

I like where you're head is here. IM should be done on a banked oval so we can watch all 8 hours and not miss any of the "action".

Whether you agree with him or not, TRS is completely on the right track and it may very well shine some more light on what is a real problem for the professionals in our sport.

And, yeah, TRS has a bit of credibility now...

Sure...WTC is a business (so is NASCAR, PGA, NBA, NFL, MLB, The America's Cup, MLS, etc...). Everyone knows that. It is not about the bottom line for the business, it is about doing what is right for the men and women that make up the pointy end of our sport. WTC is one of the major stewards of our sport...if not the biggest. They are Ironman and make up the most visible and recognizable symbol in the sport of triathlon. They have an inherent obligation to those who provide the sport with its biggest stories. The professionals are their biggest and most visible ambassadors to the rest of us and are generally being ridden as cash cows. Don't think pros are/can be ambassadors? Go to a NASCAR race and see how visible and accessible they are. I seriously can't understand why some people can't separate business from what is morally right and say that the prize purses across all of the M-Dot races are a joke (including Kona) and that WTC needs to start paying more and deeper.

Who knows....maybe WTC and some of the Slowtwich Illuminati just don't care about the professionals and want to see them go away.

You'd need more crashes to truly appeal to the American consumer.

Finally a reason to embrace our "terrible" bike handling.

I think this is ridiculous, a bunch of internet clowns that do nothing but piss people off from behind an (originally) anonymous twitter account should be the last people to try to 'make a change'. If I was Messick I would laugh about this whole thing. So you collect some money for IMLP 7th place finisher and then what? Will you do the same for all the other IM races? Nobody cares about what you do but yourself (to fullfill your need of short term attention). In fact continuously trying to shame Messick and expecting the outcome to be that he listens to you is about as dumb as things get.

I would love to see the pros in our sport get paid more, but this is absolutely not the way to do it. You have zero credibility and trustworthiness.

You might be correct. But, change has to start somewhere. There's nothing wrong with stirring the pot, this is still America.

Make my words, with Triathlon now becoming an approved NCAA women's sport and the men to soon follow, if change isn't made someday in favor of the pro's, Ironman will shrink. It happens in every sport IF long terms sustainability plans are not developed.

Andrew Messick needs to make $, that's his job. Unfortunately, right now, helping the pros make money isn't in his plan. But, he's a very intelligent man, once all of this pieces are in place he'll look to grow the sport in other ways. He's a smart guy and I'm sure he realizes for long term huge growth, the pro purses will need to grow. Who wouldn't want to watch a few select races where pros raced for $250K up top? That might even attract more media attention which might even get MORE people in the sport thus attaining long term growth, revenue and success.

Dark Mark is running point on locations for happy hours, race day shenanigans, and the 7th place awards ceremony. Follow us on twitter or watch my blog for details. I won't announce it too far in advance because my friends at Ironman have already sabotaged one of my events (in The Woodlands) by threatening the bar manager. Because they are willing to employ dirty tactics, we need to be a little more stealth.
