SLOWTWITCHERS TO THE RESCUE - PLEASE READ
Quote

Reply
Ok Folks - a thread has already started on this topic - please see the link below, but in a nut shell - a disabled gentleman on a cycling adventure had his bicycle stolen while he was eating (it is a specially modified bike for his needs) and when he went to investigate - he was knocked to the ground and robbed by some heartless woman, of all his cash and belongings
Bottom line - he is now in need and we are reaching out to Slowtwitchers to pull together and help
We have contacted the gentleman - and he has provided us the details of a local bike shop (for him) that has a bike that will work based around his special needs.
We are planning on hitting up the manufacturer of the bike along with the bike store - to get a huge price reduction - and then kick in some from a collective gathering of good souls here at Slowtwitch
We are also looking to purchase a giftcard for him from Walmart - which he could use to replace the clothing and camping items lost.
Can you spare a few dollars?
If so - please contribute - every little bit helps
This guy may not be a competitive cyclist or a triathlete even, however his bike is the ONLY way he can get around due to his disability.
A paypal account is being used to collect donations -
andrewjjoyce@sbcglobal.net
Please consider assisting here - we'll keep everyone abreast of what we have been able to do!!!
Share this story with everyone you know
Thanks - in advance for your support - kittycat is spearheading this "rescue mission"

this is great.
ok, so one this account has funding in it--how does he get the money?
and in other words, we will not be donating money directly to the bike shop...it will be coming via paypal...
i can send him an email telling him of this update (or even call him)...but i need to have my information acurate so that it's not confusing...

To be very clear for all concerned
Once we have a total amount - we have options -
1. We can get a check into his hands
2. We can apply the amount raised against the purchase of the new bike (directly with the bike shop)
3. We can apply it directly against the cost of a new bike from a bike manufacturer ( I am persuing that avenue right now - I just need more details on his specific needs)
4. The cash can be transferred directly into his bank account
As an quick update - we have $100 already in donations - including my $50 starter
Please be kind - help this guy out - remember - he did not come to us asking for help - but he surely needs it.
Not only is the bike his means of transportation for his adventure - it sounds like it is means of getting around - PERIOD
If people have product donations they would like to make - I am also happy to coordinate this - please send anythng you can spare to
Saeco USA Inc

I will bundle all items and send them in one package - I'll pick up the international shipping costs

i just got off the phone with him to give him an update of what we've gotten together so far and he is beside himself. i'm telling you this is the sweetest man!!
he said that last night he went to bed so discouraged. he has been hanging out for 5 or 6 days and was loosing hope. he said with all of this he has a new energy and has a new hope and is starting to believe he will get back on the road.
i've told him about Jim's camping gear and the account...he is just beside himself and is thrilled!
the bike he really wants is $650.00 (i forgot to ask what kind...sorry). I told him we're going to try our best to raise the money for it and it's coming together quite nicely.
with in the next 45 minutes he will call me back. let's rally together so that when he calls me i can tell him that we're close to or have met the $650.00 mark so he can get his bike.
come on people...we can do this. let's make this man's dreams come true!

Thank you for providing the opportunity to give. I hope that we can give this man back a little faith in the human race. I think in the end when all of his belongings are replaced maybe we will have erased some of the sting. I just feel super bad that he lost his journal. We can't replace that. :(
Thanks again to you and kittycat

Ok - update so far
KITTYCAT opened with a huge $200 donation - thank you so much
I am in for $100
14 other slowtwitch donations have brought the total raised so far to $542.50
Jim and several others are donating gear - which is also great
Paypal takes a 3% cut - I am going to make up that 3% so 100% of what is paid get's into this gentleman's hands!!!
I don't know how many registered slowtwitchers there are out there - but we are hoping more than 14 contribute - the donations thus far have all been very generous.
Please - help us out here - if we hit close to a thousand - we will make an announcement and stop the fundraiser - as that amount will cover his needs.
Again - great job everyone so far - we are almost there!!!!!!!

come on everyone!!! we are almost to the cut off limit!!
this is a chance to help someone directly--where there is no overhead of an organization, and no staff or politics. 100% of your money will go directly to this cause.
and the cause is just a sweet man, who is passionate about riding a bike while he still can. i wish you could hear his voice...it's so gentle and kind. i cannot imagine someone pushing him down on the ground...
he told me he had lost all hope last night and hit an all time low. he was prepared to try to get home. now with what we've done so far he is beside himself and feels nothing but hope and thankfullness.
please, for those of you who are thinking about contributing, but haven't yet, dig inside your hearts and give a little. your kindness will not go unrecognized.

Thanks Trikitty
Just spoke with Kittycat - Maurice is going to be so happy - and for the information of all those that have contibuted - or are thinking about it - this man slept at a Salvation Army hostel for several nights because he had NO CASH - he told Kitty cat it was horrible - but he had no choice.
Not only can we get his bike replaced - we can also put some cash back in his hands - he had his cash and credit cards stolen.
Kittycat said that he was actually working how how he was going to get home - he was not even thinking about getting another bike - he simply needed to arrange to get home - he is extremely humbled by the fact we are even making an effort - he has no idea of the magnitude of our effort - we told him we are trying to simply raise a few bucks - he is going to be BLOWN away.
Now.....who has any contacts at any of our trade publications - velonews, Triathlete etc etc etc etc?????
Maybe they could pitch in - or if nothing else - give some exposure to the good folks here at slowtwitch for their generosity!!!

I've got two paniers at home that I can send. Someone gave them to me, but I've never used them. I also have a light Mizuno rain jacket that I can give up (got it for almost free but don't really need it). (It has "Motorola Marathon" printed on the front).

that's great. Andrew (onefoutry) has his address listed. you can ship the jacket, etc. to Andrew and he will then ship in one shipment the box of gear.
if you can contribute the rainjacket and the panier that would be awesome!
so to recap, the list is as follows:
-camping gear--Jim
-rainjacket--cruisergirl
-panier--cruisergirl

That wold be great - my address is sitting in this thread SOMEWHERE
If you forward the gear to me - I will pass it along.
Ok- so this is where we are at right now
We have a few pending payments but we just hit the thousand dollar mark @$1020.00
In addition to the equipment donations - we plan to have installed on the bike before he takes delivery - a new computer, lights and a new helmet.
I have left a message for Maurice - he has no idea at this stage of our success in raising the funds - I will update everyone after I hear from him.
After all is said and done - he will walk away from this episode whole - with a few hundred buicks in his pocket - which should ease his pain and enable him to not only continue on his journey =- but also continue to use his bike for mobility on a daily basis.
I can assure you that no matter disheartened he may have been by those criminal acts, the Slowtwitch community will have certainly restored his faith in mankind.
Doesn't matter what kind of bike you ride - we are all a community - and as evidenced by today - a community that supports each other
Great job everyone - donations can still come in for the next few days if you choose to contribute - I am hoping to finalize the purchase of the bike and accessories for him by the weekend - and have the donated items shipped to him within the same time frame.
KITTYCAT - a huge effort and thank you for organizing this whole thing and for your personal generosity

excellent job to each and every person who has taken action today to make a REAL difference in someone's life. Each of you who has stepped up to do something should feel great!
It's one thing to recognize injustice, but is a whole other thing to step up and do something about it. Those who contributed to this situation have done just that. It shows the power of positive people. Together we can make great things happen!!

ok, so i just got off the phone with the press and they are at the tail end of lunch, are thrilled with this news, and will be calling me back this afternoon to map our the details of doing a follow up story. our efforts are exactly the kind of response they were hoping for.
i'd like for onefourty to speak with the press actually...then he can give some final details of the funds raised, etc.

Update -still waiting to speak with Maurice
once I do - will obtain the necessary info from him to source a replacement bike etc.
Once the remainder of the checks come in - and the gear arrives here at my office - which I envisage will be Friday/maybe Monday - we'll be good to go and he will be mobile again next week
Had discussed with KC - that we should also buy him a nice new journal to start, this - the newest chapter in his life.
And..............................I want to point out that it was JIM who suggested we start the ball rolling - I know he is at work right now - kudos to you Jim

are there any canadians who can take a few photos of Maurice when he gets his new schwag from us?
it'd be great to have someone on-hand to take pics so that we all can see the joy in his face when he starts off on his new journey.

Here's a thought - might any of the bike shop owners that lurk in here (and no - this is not pointed at TomD) have enough pull with a bike manufacturer to see if they can cut us a deal on a replacement bike for Maurice - which we could buy direct - rather than paying full retail through a Canadian bike shop - sight unseen?
Even if they had us purchase the bike through one of their dealers to validate the transaction.
I'll find out more about the bike that was stolen - and any special mods the bike had to enable Maurice to ride it and get back to you
So????????????
Just a thought.....................................................................

I have had one of the worst months in my life. And I'm reminded daily of how lucky I am just to be alive. I can't tell you how good this makes me feel to help someone out in a time of need. I really need something to lift my spirits right now. I can't offer very much after my accident, but I am sending a check for $10.00 to Andrew tonight. Maurice, if you get to read this thread, know that there are people who will never meet you who care.

Great job everyone and kudos to KC and oneforty.6 for running with the ball for me. That is one of the great things about ST, everyone steps up to the plate with their strengths. I was just figuring out how to locate Maurice when someone posted his number, and KittyCat had already called him. Andrew got the donations started by using his paypal account. Unfortunately I had to work all day with only a 15 minute break between jobs, neither of which presently involve a computer. I am happy though, it got done. I can imagine Maurice feels a whole lot better tonight then he did last night. Last night he was trying to figure out how to get home, tonight he is planning the next stage of his journey.

LATEST UPDATE....................................................
Ok, so both Kittycat and I have had the chance to speak with Maurice tonight - and he is flabbergasted (for lack of a better word) that a bunch of total strangers from various parts of the country (and world) - have chipped in to make an effort for someone like him.
He is the most humble, softly spoken (and now shocked) person you could ever hope to speak with.
The attention we have attracted to this cause has been unbelievable - and at this stage - we now have a bike shop in Canada who is participating in this cause.
A large percentage of the cash we have collected will be absorbed in bike, accessories, clothing, camp gear - above and beyond that which I will be shipping to him (I have asked him to hold off on buying anything until he receives our care package - which won't be hard for him as he has no cash)
The remainder will go towards the money stolen from him - in what I believe is the most heartless of the two crimes he was subjected to this past week. This cycling odessey he is on - is part of a 7 year journey so far - one in which his ability to cycle is liberating to him, especially given his physical challenges (nobody is disabled - we are simply a mix of able bodied (often mentally challenged folks) and physically challenged folks)
The plan is to see what remaining donations filter in over the next few days - quite a few people have indicated they would be sending checks.
At that time - we will be drawing a check in Canadian funds and distributing the cash to him as needed. He will receive 100% of the funds!
Maurice has no idea at this stage - (unless he now is a slowtwitcher!!!!) - of how much we have raised for him. He told me that he
would refund any money beyond that which is absolutely needed to get him going again
Can you believe that??????
How often do we bitch on this forum about the stupid shit and here we have someone - who is in obvious need - but is SO appreciative of the efforts of everyone combined - that in this time of need - he wants to give back!
We did not enter into discussions about how much money was lost in cash/cards etc - but based on our conversation - it was a considerable amount of money - possibly enough to get him through the next few months on his bike.
His situation is such that he wasn't able to simply pick up the phone and call his bank and ask them to wire money from his checking account to wherever he was.
I would hazard a guess to say that he lost more money in one foul swoop - than many of us would ever care to imagine.
So.........here is the current situation
I will wait until Sat for all checks to arrive - I have an email from all members sending checks and will mark them off as they arrive - I will also wait for the different products/items and gifts to arrive at my office.
I will go ahead and purchase - out of my own pocket - a nice durable journal - to replace the one lost in this incident and propose the following.....
We start a thread - which hijacking of will not be tolerated - and we seek Dan's assistance here.
Each and every Slowtwitcher that contributed - will have a chance to send a little wish or message into the thread - which I will print up and affix the entire thread to the first few pages of the journal - as a point of reference to him that we do care. It is also a way for you to communicate directly with this wonderful man
This is similar in nature to the virtual card idea - which is great
Does everybody think this is a good idea or not?
Once we have the thread printed and the care package on the way - I am going to have delivered via FEDEX or DHL - the balance of the fundraising efforts in a certified check in Canadian funds, made out to him personally.
And if you have read this far - I know you want to know how successful this cause has been
Thanks to each and every one of us that have contributed -
we believe we have so far raised just over $2000
Great job everyone!!!!!!
(Important Disclaimer: Because we are dealing with cash contributions here - I am making available complete records of all contributions into this account, paypal and checks, and a further record or disburtion of funds to Maurice. Kittycat will have a hard copy of these documents - and any other person requiring documentary evidence of this, need only ask. This entire effort was undertaken with a large amount of trust by all contributors - that the funds would find their way to the intended recipient - and I only wish to be forthright - and allow an open audit by anyone here - to evidence the appropriate and intended receipt and allocation of funds. I am an honest person - but I want to ensure that all parties involved have a 100% comfort level in the cash management of this fund)
Sorry but I felt it necessary to put that in there!
Have a great night everyone - Maurice has told me that he went from having the worst week of his life - to feeling relieved to know that there are kind people out there.
Wait until he receives the bike, gifts and the check!
Again - a HUGE thank you to all involved - this was the collaborative efforts of almost 90 slowtwitchers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a very high end set of Jandd panniers and racks both front and back (including rain covers) that have been used for a two week tour of Europe. Valued at $1,000.00 Canadian. I'll also throw in a rear rack pack that is a bit older but still in good condition. If he needs these, I can ship them direct since I live in Canada. Let me know. I will be participating in the Tour For Kids over the next four days, so if you need them shipped before next week, e-mail info(at)cdisports(dot)com and I will have Richard send them out. Otherwise please e-mail me at

I think it's unbelievable the generosity that everyone has brought to the table. I grew up near Saskatoon and it is truly a beautiful place, but I find it disheartening that this happened to this kind gentleman. If you need someone to deliver the package and take pictures let me know......I can gather up some friends that would be more than willing to help out any way they can.

Not a lot but just dropped $20 into the effort. Makes me happy being a Canadian, and just a human being for that matter, that there are so many generous and supportive people out there. Imagien fi this kind fo effort were to occur for everything that needed aid. This world would be a much better place. Good job everyone and if KC is on TV, I'll make sure to watch. If any other news come through the Canaidan Press, I'll be sure to pass it along.

A few items have started arriving here at my office today.
It will be nice to get these over to Maurice on Monday.
He has delayed his departure until these items arrive as he just can't get over how thoughtful folks have been

He'll be continuing on his journey once he gets fitted out over the weekend.
He will be waiting for the care package to arrive before rolling out!
We had the participation of a local bike shop (local to where he is right now)

I work in a welding shop and related this story to the guys yesterday. To a man (and these are some pretty hardcore freakies we're talking about here) all were impressed that this took place..and some volunteered to head out west and track down those responsible in the first place. Given the company they keep I'd hate to be those people should any decide to follow through on those words. It's been said before by a lot of others but you have done a great thing here..and it has restored a lot of faith in humanity to many more people than just those on the forum. Certainly not what most people take triathletes to be like. Well done good and faithfull servant...

Kentinger - it was a group effort and a few of us simply facilitated this - some folks here have gone WAY beyond generous - in either cash or product donations - I was and will be for the longest time, amazed at this community.
I have also had a lot of messages form people who are not in a position to contribute - but wished for their thoughts and messages to to be forwarded to Maurice
Not sure of the specific bike - it is a touring bike - will have more details next week.

he is aware of the Forum policy right? No pics or it doesn't exist. Maybe the bike shop guys could take his pic once they get him set to go.
And about the amazingness that is this forum I totally agree. Most people with (what can only be termed as) dispensable income wouldn't think to contribute to something like this. We see it here on a regular basis. Funny how a lot of times..things I see or hear about deplete my faith in human nature (like the people on the Air France flight that are all alive today but are suing them for $330mil)...and they happen all the time..yet one small (in reality what took place is barely a blip on the radar for some people out there) gesture like this sort of wipes the slate clean again. Kudos STers...for going against the grain once more.

It is surely a good thing we have done, but, admit it, isn't it a bit TNO-like?
Just kidding....I got my start over there
