IM WI to rolling swim start?
That's the current word on the street. The new rolling start seemed to work very well at IM CDA, so WTC may be implementing it more broadly.
Not sure how they'll handle the logistics, as WI has typically had an in-water start.

I certainly hope not as IMWI is arguably the best swim venue for spectators. From the Monona Terrace Convention Center spectators can watch the entire course. I think one of the reasons for the popularity factor of IMWI is the accessibility for spectators. It is the only North American IM I've done where, due to the number and frequency of spectators, I've actually diverted into a port a potty to pee. That said, if anyone were to go under the water is so gross it would be hard to see them.

Are you referring to this year's race or future races? Can I ask your source(s)?

I don't understand this request completely. Competitive meaning what? Sub 60 minute swim? If that is the case, and if it is like IMCdA then you will have sub 60m group and you obviously get off first. What am I missing?

For this year. Nothing official yet, it comes from someone who has been involved in discussions with the race director.

How would changing the swim to a rolling start affect the accessibility for the spectators?

The space out of the water would certainly need to change... But I suppose if they plan it right there is enough room.

I'm torn. I've done WI and then CdA this year. I didn't mind WI's swim, but really did like CdA better with the start change.

Personally I think rolling is nice for a beach start, while mass start can stay with in-water starts.

Just my opinions...

I dont get it. You need to worry about four people...the one in front, the one on either side and the one smacking your feet...the thought that smaller waves make it safer and easier for assistance is just stupid. IM needs a litmus test...the idiots need to stay home. If you are even slightly worried about the swim - DONT SHOW UP. What we need is AG cut off's not waves. Say....90min for anyone under 70.

Competitive = Kona qualifiers.

Maybe I just need to take my elite card and get my ass handed to me.

For a serious response it really has to do with knowing your place when you cross the finish line.

This year at IMCDA, 3rd and 4th in M30-34 crossed the line in opposite order. While I know that 4th (3rd to finish) was deep in the hurt locker at mile 20, having someone catch you in your AG at mile 24 is mighty strong motivation.

Finding out you got beat a few minutes after you finished just sucks.

Still doesn't really matter, because I would think that the top 4-5 in most AG, especially 30-34 are swimming sub 60. So you are going to start in the same group period. Nothing to worry about. Unless some guy seeds himself in the 1 hour to 1:15 group which at CdA crossed the mat a whole 40 second later.

I don't see an issue at all.

I hope not. I've only done IMMT (beach start) and IMWI. My IMWI swim start was a breeze. I've had more contact in local sprint distance races. The key to IMWI is to get in the water early and float. If you wait around on the beach I am sure it was a clusterfuck but if everyone gets out in the water and spreads out, it can be a very calm start.

I sure hope not. Granted I'm not the best swimmer but the lake is so big and wide that anyone can find clear water. I started right by the rocks last year because I was having leg issues that morning and didn't want to fight anyone for water. Don't think I made contact until the turn and even then it was very light. I just don't see the need for it for an in water start with plenty of space.

Slight update: it's a done deal. Pros will be an in-water start, AG rolling start from out of water.

Still some details of logistics to be decided: where to line up (on the helix?) , how to get from the timing mat to the first turn (it would be big early pinch point if you have to go straight out then turn by the ski jump before hitting the 1st straighaway), etc.

Here's my biggest problem with this (besides the fact it's being created to allow people to be pussies - call me elitist bc I am): I shit/piss all the way up to the start. Last time at WI, I was in the porta potty until the 2 min mark and swam up to the start (100 yards from prime position) with no problem. If I have to get in a corral with 55 minute swimmers, they are gonna be pissed and not let people in the chute 30 seconds prior to start. -- maybe this is something already handled but worries me.
