Everyone be safe at IMTX tomorrow as it's going to be a scorcher
Quote | Reply
High of 90, mostly sunny and humid, heat index forecasted to max at around 97 degrees in the afternoon. More similar to 2011 (but with way more sun) than last year when it wasn't as humid. Appears to be the worst of 2011 (temp and humidity) with the worst of 2012 (sun).

Nobody is acclimated... not even us locals as it has been unseasonably cool up until this week.

It's going to get ugly out there. Hydrate, sunscreen and slow down.

Until 2 days ago, we have had a pleasant spring. The timing is terrible.

And I'm still surprised this event is held in May, which is completely hit or miss. Could be awesome weather or summer like. Should be a month earlier or in late October. Just the addition of humidity in the last week has left me feeling flat.

The big difference between here and IMLou is the lack of heat acclimation for everyone. IMLou is, after all, in late August so summer has been in full swing everywhere. Sure, some places are warmer than others in August but people are at least in some way accustomed to some kind of heat.

Not so much tomorrow.

All that and the winds are forecasted to be 15 and gusting to 20, wont be like 2011 bike times.

April in Texas can also be colder than December. October/November is the best time for 140.6 in Texas (in my opinion)

You're right. I was signed up for IMTX again and bailed a few weeks back and decided to do IM Canada instead. I'm glad I did.

90, humid as fuck, 15mph headwind the last 45 miles of the bike = misery.

It can't be worse than St George last year.

Feels much hotter than last year, plus air quality level is labeled "very unhealthy" on the local news - Mexico wildfire smoke creating haze throughout the area - it's worse to the south, so hopefully it doesn't get too bad here. Time to suffer.

Here in Canada, they're the same thing. It looks like we're only going to get about maybe 12 weeks of nice riding weather this year after a terrible start to the year.

Not sure why we don't see more people with these on their backs for the run. I would freeze mine and have it nice and cold when I got into T2, then it cools you as it melts and you can hydrate (70 oz) as needed. Yes some weight penalty, but that would come back after 15 miles when everyone is dehydrated and over heating.
Cooling and hydration with room for electrolytes and gels! Next hot half or full Ironman this is the route I'll be going.

In theory that is a great idea but unfortunately I don't think even the fastest of pro's would get to T2 in an Ironman before it melted and ended up warm...Now if you had a friend with transition access then that might work.

I would consider it for any long hot Ultra's or stage races though.

Hope everyone survived. That heat was brutal. When you added in the headwind for the last half of the bike, and then the sun on the run, it made for a long, long day. But hey, we knew it was going to be a long day anyways! Congrats to everyone that toughed it out. You earned that finish yesterday.

We should have expected the headwind. At least i did, after hearing it being talked about online, I made sure to do a test ride on Thursday of the back section near jackson rd, and it was as bad as was talked about. The heat though, that was hard to deal with.

It was an 18:25:00 day for me. I felt great until that barren wasteland leading up to the mile 94 rest stop and I just kept collapsing after that. They took my chip when I started the third lap of the run and I spent the last 2 hours almost entirely on my own until i finished after 1am.

Dude, you rock. It was killer out there; I was completely shattered after the bike. To keep going after they take the chip takes massive amounts of guts.

Good job on deciding to keep going.Everyone does these things for their own reasons so even though you aren't an "official finisher" I have no doubt that your sense of satisfaction is no less than most who finished hours before you.

Way to tough it out. I considered quitting after burning my feet on the hot pavement going through T2. I started the run with blisters covering the front part of both of my feet. The same thing happened to the guy staying a couple of doors up in our hotel. It was a bummer to START the run with feet feeling worse than they would at mile 25, but in the end I don't think that made all that much difference to my time.

I started out the run at a good pace, but melted down just a few miles in. My legs felt fine, but I just could not handle the heat.

Seriously, thekidd, nothing but huge respect. You earned it so many times over. I seriously doubt very many of us would have it in us to keep going.

Helo guy - no kidding on the burning feet in T2! That was the only logistical thing I noticed that they could work on yesterday. Some carpet in there, or don't have the volunteers take your bike shoes with your bike. Either way, and it's not a problem. I have a huge blister on the ball of my left foot today from it.

Sounds like just about everyone got burned (literally) in T2. I had small but manageable blisters on the balls of my feet but my training partner had 1/3 of each foot burned and blistered. It was a good 90 min before she had them wrapped and semi-manageable to finish her run.

Me too! Blisters from burning my feet on the sidewalk. Right foot blister burst on the run (walk) and left foot blister was intact today. My friggin feet almost hurt more than my muscle soreness.
Who woulda thunk it?
Who/how contact race mgmt to correct this?
I bet lotsa folks had it happen.
