He probably assumed you were the OP.

It is kind of ironic. The OP bitching about the fact that Maher has an opinion and expressed it on his show. He cries, "who does he think he is to have an opinion about something and express it."

Maybe you should be berating Rodred........wait.....Rodred is a righty, correct? Nevermind.....you aren't allowed to berate him. You shoul dinstead berate the guy calling him out......and be ironic about it.

I was referring to the post of yours where you spoke of the stench of my post, which was pointing out lies that republicans tell

Did I call your post "useless"? Did I question why you posted it? No. So, tell me how that relates to what I was responding to?

Why aren't I allowed to berate Rodred? Because of his politics? That's news to me. Thanks for pointing out that rule, the page it was on must have fallen out of my playbook.

True dat. I work with 4 Mormon men here. ALL of them are single paycheck households with 4 kids (all parents under the age of 40, and some under 30). All live in nice homes.

As far as the cheerfull / happiness? Must be all the anti-depressants.... 1 in 5 LDS women are on them.

My personal test of "cult" status for a religion can be answered by one question.... if you leave or get excommunicated, do they forbid your family for having a relationship with you? If the answer is yes, than, by my standards, you got yourself a nice little cult goin on. It's all about control....

Are you saying that regarding the Mormon church?

If so, that's false. I would be curious to know where you heard this idea, and more importantly why you pass it as fact to others.

Really? Coming from you that is laughable...which is consistent with almost all of what you post.

Another spot-on BarryP analysis

yes, I am saying that the Mormon religion does this. maybe the Mormon's won't publish or publically admit to their tactics, but there is huge pressure on families from stake and council leaders to cut off ties with excommunicated people. well known fact. just like the Moonies will never admit that they encourage their followers to cut off ties to their families.

i'm not talking about losing a temple rec, or a little silly dispute. i'm talking about when someone is "unsealed" from their wife and kids.

i've read several books by ex-Mormons who will all relate that their families and friends were told by elders not to associate.

I'll talk for lakerfan...but I may be wrong of course...

I think he meant that he laughed when reading this, because of the '...why you pass it as fact to others', which is hmm...exactly what religions do.
They pass a lot of things as facts to others. It's great when they pass as fact that we should love each other, and be compassionate, and so on. But
when it's about the virgin mary giving birth, the resurrection, etc. from any religion, well...these aren't facts (except in guru's world...in which they
have scientific proofs that all this is true and happened...but he personally knows the tooth fairy, so...)

So, anyhow, I think the first assertion should be pink ;-)

That's the best you could come up with? Clearly, you are off your game. Although, I'm impressed you didn't resort to your oft used standby of calling the person you are responding to childish names.

I won't disagree that this happens, after all we're dealing with both a mostly lay clergy that is often untrained and the fact that Mormonism isn't immune from its fair share of dysfunctional families. But to imply that this is somehow some unpublished or secret policy, that there is huge pressure from "stake and council leaders," will need a lot more evidence than some unnamed books by former Mormons. (I hope you're not relying on the Martha Nibley book.)

I'm very good friends with two of the September Six. (You can't really get more public excommunications.) While they have had their ups and downs, neither has experienced what you claim to be some unwritten policy. One actively continues to criticize the Church and yet is welcome to regularly attend Sunday meetings with her family.

My father-in-law was excommunicated over disagreements re church doctrine, among other things. Yet his former ward continues to invite him to all kinds of activities. No one in our family has received any pressure to disassociate.

For years, I was inactive and openly hostile. Yet the most I've ever experienced is my mother's disappointment.

I'll stop here, but the list couild go on.

Yes, it's anecdotal evidence, but I still think it's significant, considering how immersed I have been in Mormon culture. Frankly, I don't think you know what you're talking about.

If that's what he meant, that that seems fair.

Although, to also be fair, there was absolutely nothing in AI5's post to indicate he was defending religion in general or that he ever took a position supporting
"exactly what religions do." Does he have a history of doing this here? I don't seem to remember any of his posts.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. What Francois said which basically comes down to the following:

The whole idea of someone defending a religion by accusing the other person of misrepresenting a fact is simply "entertaining" to me. ;-)

Glad I could entertain. ;)

I got the impression when reading that post that he was regurgitating some falsehoods he had 'learned'.....and I was right. What better place to find cold hard facts than a couple books by disgruntled ex-members.

Everyone is an expert, and someone thought their expertise was in the 'secrets' of the LDS church. As the true expert, I was kindly helping to debunk that.

Well, independent of what he thinks, I find very little good in a religion that has roots based on violence, corruption and deception. It contains most of the characteristics that make it a cult in my book.

Sure, there are a lot of very good people who are Mormons today but then there are also a lot of people in this world who suffer from blind faith because the thought of contemplating the fact that God doesn't exist scares the living shit out of them.
