I am pretty new to triathlons and training for an IM. Looking to finish in a respectable time. I consider my diet to be pretty good. While I have cut back on my beer consumption, not willing to give up a cold beer. Lately have had a couple weddings where there have been multiple cold beers. How much of an impact does this have on recovery? 1-2 at night after a long ride okay? Would love to hear different schools of thought on this.

No beer during training........!

Now pm me and send me all your beer

Got to have beer. A good friend of mine who is a coach and also posts on this board has one request concerning beer for his clients....you can't drink more beers than miles that you have ran for that day or for that week. I don't know nor do I care about my beer consumption. I am 48 years old and if my beer drinking keeps me from a podium spot I am not to concerned. I often come in after a hard run or ride and have a nice cold beer. Nothing beats that.

I am thinking that would be a bad idea, however, I can probably find you some crazy divorced woman. They run rampant.

Hmmm what kind of crazy, I've dated crazy girls and I don't want to do that again... I know we are getting off topic people, but this could get interesting. Although, if you're old enough to be my mother, where are all the younger lady triathletes.?

well technically, I live in the South, so I am 39...but there are grandmas here that age.

There are some younger gals here, they race IM and to my knowledge they are single.

You're 39 because you live in the south? And you're also one of the other young ladies that race IM there? :) Ok time for bed, I'll be back at this in the morning

No, I am old enough to be the mother of a recent college grad (ok they wouldn't have graduated if they were born to a 16 year old in these parts). I don't race IM, I am far too busy for that. Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.

Based on this advice, I am right where I should be. I have often contemplated which I could give up if I had to, beer or coffee. I love my coffee, drink close to a pot a day, but the beer is what makes life worth living. There is nothing like sucking down a 6 pack while mowing the lawn and stumbling around with the weed whacker. Or getting back from a long hot summer ride or run and chucking a couple of beers into the pool and jumping in (they float and are easy to find- try it).

Just this past Sunday I found myself slightly overindulging in more ways than one at a local chili contest that was serving dirt cheap Blue Moons. I got home bloated, buzzed, and lazy, and got out there anyways to get in my run. Furthermore, while they weren't necessarily my best, I have had some pretty damn good hungover next day rides and runs. My policy is: regardless of what I did to myself the night before, I still need to get out there and punch my card and do my miles. Usually when the workout is over, the hangover is too. I never let the beer get in the way of the workout, but am not afraid to combine the two, when necessary.

Living in New England there is no end to the delicious micro brews at the local package store. I know it is not helping me get to my weight goals, but I will make other sacrifices elsewhere to justify those delicious calories. I'll take a buzz and some tasty IPA over a serving of pasta or desert any day. And just for the record, it's not keeping me off the local podium, I still put in the work.

Shut up body and do what I tell you.

A typical July afternoon at the Jersey shore: Head out for a 5pm run just as the lifeguards leave. run down the beach taking in all the "sights". running without a shirt because I can. Listening to my tunes. finish the 4,6,9 miles, whatever. Jump in cool ocean. Up to cabana. Open fridge and pop a cool one. Through the TV on to a tour highlight show. Jump in hottub.

What can be bad about this?

Randy Christofferson(http://www.rcmioga.blogspot.com)

Someday I won't be able to do this, but today is not that day!

if your cutting weight dont drink. If your already at a serious, lean race weight, you dont have to drink as much to take the edge off. As for performance, I'd guess the additive effects of drinking a little too much for way to long will affect your ability to race a great deal more 20 years down the road than in the immediate short term. Dont get me wrong, I polished off the better part of an entire bottle of ketel one saturday and road a solid hard tempo for 3h 50min sunday. With very good numbers. Just sayin tho drinking is bad for us, overall....

To each his own 1-2 2x week should be OK. I hate cold beer and prefer room temperature.

Depends what beer, stouts and ales can actually have low calories - check the calorie count of guiness. Strong lagers are laden with calories. I drink wheat bear a lot and it's not too bad. Light beer is not real beer.

This is pretty much spot on...ethanol and fructose are broken down in the body in nearly identical ways. The only reason you don't get a 'buzz' from fructose is because it does not get metabolized in the brain.

Anyway, yes drinking a can of beer is just as bad for you as drinking a can of regular coke. I posted this video in another thread already today but I truly believe people need to educate themselves more:

Diet, weight and appearance of someone presenting years of studies doesn't mean he doesn't have credibility.

I know several ortho MDs and podiatrists who are smokers yet one of their biggest health suggestions is to quit smoking...

But here I am responding to someone who uses the handle "TriBeer" as if it is going to change your opinion. It's people like you who are attributing to the astronomical rising costs of health care because of the things you ingest. People who smoke, drink, eat incredibly unbalanced diets should not qualify for health care as it rises the costs for those who choose to live a healthier lifestyle.

That last part was getting off on a rant....but it's the truth.

What if the person who drinks pays $60,000 / yr in taxes and the clean-eating guy pays nothing? What then? Not a slag at you, but that holier-than-thou attitude pisses me off...

It isn't a 'holier-than-thou' attitude, it is the truth. I don't get why people tend to get so upset when I express that I don't believe people who make wise health choices compared to someone who makes many poor health choices. 1. It's my opinion, 2. People have the right to do what they please within the confines of law (drink, smoke, etc). but 3. Why should people pay for their health care when it was a choice THEY made in the first place?

*Edit* Someone who is paying $60,000 annum doesn't have much to worry about ;)

Joe Strummer ran 3:20 marathon in 1982 Paris. He wasn't really world-class (tri)atlhlete given that his day job was being lead-vocalist/guitarist of world's most important rock band at the time: The Clash!

This is what Joe said about beer and training in an interview in late 1990s:

Q: Didn’t you once run in the Paris Marathon?
Joe: Yep. I ran three of them.
Q: Correct me if I’m wrong but is it also true that you never trained for any of them?
Joe: You shouldn’t really ask me about my training regime, you know.
Q: Why?
Joe: Because it’s not good and I wouldn’t want people to copy it.
Q: Don’t make me beat it out of you.
Joe: Okay, you want it, here it is. Drink 10 pints of beer the night before the race. Ya got that? And don’t run a single step at least four weeks before the race.
Q: No running at all?
Joe: No, none at all. And don’t forget the 10 pints of beer the night before. But make sure you put a warning in this article, “Do not try this at home.” I mean, it works for me and Hunter Thompson but it might not work for others. I can only tell you what I do.

I have no health care costs, because I'm very healthy and not overweight.

Due to Dr. Lustig's large size, I believe he will have more of an impact on our healthcare costs than I will. A few studies would back that up.

Also, the occasional beer is most likely good for you. Everything in moderation!

Sorry can't receive the doc as an expert on obesity. He should be a better role model.

You do realize that the general attitude of pretty much every triathlete on this forum is totally unhealthy, do you?

I mean endurance training and running come with their fair share of injuries. That HAS to have an impact on healthcare costs too... Like everyone says: everything in moderation :-)
