Beer during training? Quote | Reply

I am pretty new to triathlons and training for an IM. Looking to finish in a respectable time. I consider my diet to be pretty good. While I have cut back on my beer consumption, not willing to give up a cold beer. Lately have had a couple weddings where there have been multiple cold beers. How much of an impact does this have on recovery? 1-2 at night after a long ride okay? Would love to hear different schools of thought on this.

There is nothing on earth I like more than beer when it comes to fluids.
In the off season I consume WAY too much.
In pre season like now I try to have no alcohol as I attempt to get back to race weight. I find I DO eat worse after a few beers, and do not recover the same I do not believe.
If I must have some, I attempt to have the low calorie beer. Although not the same alcohol content(3% I believe), I still get the taste with only 67 calories.

For those who occasionally complain about workout/training tweets. Fyi, I'm sitting on my ass drinking an ice cold beer.

Hell, I'll have a beer immediately after a ride if I can, and then another one or two at dinner like normal. Unless you're really really needing to drop weight, life's too short to give up beer.

I used to drink a beer before running all the time. Still have one after training. But never during. Sounds like a good idea though.

I don't have a link, but I remember reading that alcohol slows glycogen replacement. So the only time I don't have a drink during training is after a long training session where I plan on having another long training session the following day. Otherwise I don't think it's a big impact. I had two beers the night before my last HIM. It helped my go to sleep.

If you're looking to loose weight then beer may hurt a little bit. But I use a simple rule. During your dinner just count your beer as a carb serving. So for example, if you're having a couple of beers with dinner, skip the bread or rice. Again, only if you're concerned about weight.

Cons of beer:
Beer makes you fat with all the calories.

Pros of beer:
Beer also makes you drunk.

A short course guy myself and I prefer bourbon to beer, but to cut out either seems like a crime to me. Life is way to short to give up living.

And as for recovery - work out hard, drink a lot, fall asleep, wake up - your recovered.....

just my thoughts..... no alcohol, none in any form. In fact I'd wish I'd gone that way sooner.

The first little while it nagged a bit - especially at the BBQ summer day etc., but now no way & I can't stand the stuff.

I love cold clean water. Non-alcoholic Becks is pretty good too.

I think living life drug and alcohol free is truly living life, took me a while to reach that conclusion and happy for it.

The low calorie shit isn't really beer. I'd abstain before drinking BSO's.

there are several members of this forum who follow the "3 for a PB" protocol the night before every race. After races, it's a given.

personally, i look forward to my thursday night swim/bar brick. I'd highly suggest it IF you have a masters swim program at night. It might be frowned upon if you go to a morning masters swim/bar brick and then show up to work.

I won't get all preachy...but I can't imagine taking masters athletic competitions too seriously. Now...if you're young, don't have kids and want to be a pro...well...then that's another story.

I usually have one on nights before a normal training day. If I'm going to have a long ride, run, or swim scheduled the next day, I try to stay away...it seems that I just get too dehydrated and feel sluggish the next day...even after just one.

I guess I'm a cheap date!

I had a long interchange with a friend who is a registered dietician, has a master's degree in nutrition, and a practicing sports nutritionist. she's also a top (as in- she podium's in local races) age grouper triathlete.

Sadly, as much as I promoted the value of the carb and fluid end of things- she sadly reported that beer was not a good choice as a recovery drink.

so- at least I have an excuse as to why I'm not faster.

I used to drink a lot more than I do now. I have found as I get older (52), and train harder, I need more recovery. No surprise there. But alcohol affects me more now. I don't sleep well when I drink, and I feel so much better when I don't drink for several days. I think it is the quality of sleep, like the quality of workouts, that makes the difference. I can't wait till IM TX is over and I can have a few quality beers!

Our little run group goes for beers on Tues and Thurs nights after workouts. One of the guys won his age group at Boston, so it couldn't be too bad.

You can drink beer and get fast. We make enough sacrifices as amateur athletes and never lose sight that this shit is supposed to be fun. If you like a beer or 2 then drink em. If you like a few more on weekends then drink them too. If you aren't getting faster then train harder, it's not because you drank a beer last night.

Got to have beer. A good friend of mine who is a coach and also posts on this board has one request concerning beer for his clients....you can't drink more beers than miles that you have ran for that day or for that week. I don't know nor do I care about my beer consumption. I am 48 years old and if my beer drinking keeps me from a podium spot I am not to concerned. I often come in after a hard run or ride and have a nice cold beer. Nothing beats that.

Hmmm what kind of crazy, I've dated crazy girls and I don't want to do that again... I know we are getting off topic people, but this could get interesting. Although, if you're old enough to be my mother, where are all the younger lady triathletes.?

well technically, I live in the South, so I am 39...but there are grandmas here that age.

There are some younger gals here, they race IM and to my knowledge they are single.

No, I am old enough to be the mother of a recent college grad (ok they wouldn't have graduated if they were born to a 16 year old in these parts). I don't race IM, I am far too busy for that. Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.

Based on this advice, I am right where I should be. I have often contemplated which I could give up if I had to, beer or coffee. I love my coffee, drink close to a pot a day, but the beer is what makes life worth living. There is nothing like sucking down a 6 pack while mowing the lawn and stumbling around with the weed whacker. Or getting back from a long hot summer ride or run and chucking a couple of beers into the pool and jumping in (they float and are easy to find- try it).

Just this past Sunday I found myself slightly overindulging in more ways than one at a local chili contest that was serving dirt cheap Blue Moons. I got home bloated, buzzed, and lazy, and got out there anyways to get in my run. Furthermore, while they weren't necessarily my best, I have had some pretty damn good hungover next day rides and runs. My policy is: regardless of what I did to myself the night before, I still need to get out there and punch my card and do my miles. Usually when the workout is over, the hangover is too. I never let the beer get in the way of the workout, but am not afraid to combine the two, when necessary.

Living in New England there is no end to the delicious micro brews at the local package store. I know it is not helping me get to my weight goals, but I will make other sacrifices elsewhere to justify those delicious calories. I'll take a buzz and some tasty IPA over a serving of pasta or desert any day. And just for the record, it's not keeping me off the local podium, I still put in the work.

Shut up body and do what I tell you.

A typical July afternoon at the Jersey shore: Head out for a 5pm run just as the lifeguards leave. run down the beach taking in all the "sights". running without a shirt because I can. Listening to my tunes. finish the 4,6,9 miles, whatever. Jump in cool ocean. Up to cabana. Open fridge and pop a cool one. Through the TV on to a tour highlight show. Jump in hottub.

What can be bad about this?

if your cutting weight dont drink. If your already at a serious, lean race weight, you dont have to drink as much to take the edge off. As for performance, I'd guess the additive effects of drinking a little too much for way to long will affect your ability to race a great deal more 20 years down the road than in the immediate short term. Dont get me wrong, I polished off the better part of an entire bottle of ketel one saturday and road a solid hard tempo for 3h 50min sunday. With very good numbers. Just sayin tho drinking is bad for us, overall....

Depends what beer, stouts and ales can actually have low calories - check the calorie count of guiness. Strong lagers are laden with calories. I drink wheat bear a lot and it's not too bad. Light beer is not real beer.

This is pretty much spot on...ethanol and fructose are broken down in the body in nearly identical ways. The only reason you don't get a 'buzz' from fructose is because it does not get metabolized in the brain.

Anyway, yes drinking a can of beer is just as bad for you as drinking a can of regular coke. I posted this video in another thread already today but I truly believe people need to educate themselves more:

Diet, weight and appearance of someone presenting years of studies doesn't mean he doesn't have credibility.

I know several ortho MDs and podiatrists who are smokers yet one of their biggest health suggestions is to quit smoking...

But here I am responding to someone who uses the handle "TriBeer" as if it is going to change your opinion. It's people like you who are attributing to the astronomical rising costs of health care because of the things you ingest. People who smoke, drink, eat incredibly unbalanced diets should not qualify for health care as it rises the costs for those who choose to live a healthier lifestyle.

That last part was getting off on a rant....but it's the truth.

It isn't a 'holier-than-thou' attitude, it is the truth. I don't get why people tend to get so upset when I express that I don't believe people who make wise health choices compared to someone who makes many poor health choices. 1. It's my opinion, 2. People have the right to do what they please within the confines of law (drink, smoke, etc). but 3. Why should people pay for their health care when it was a choice THEY made in the first place?

*Edit* Someone who is paying $60,000 annum doesn't have much to worry about ;)

Joe Strummer ran 3:20 marathon in 1982 Paris. He wasn't really world-class (tri)atlhlete given that his day job was being lead-vocalist/guitarist of world's most important rock band at the time: The Clash!

This is what Joe said about beer and training in an interview in late 1990s:

Q: Didn’t you once run in the Paris Marathon?
Joe: Yep. I ran three of them.
Q: Correct me if I’m wrong but is it also true that you never trained for any of them?
Joe: You shouldn’t really ask me about my training regime, you know.
Q: Why?
Joe: Because it’s not good and I wouldn’t want people to copy it.
Q: Don’t make me beat it out of you.
Joe: Okay, you want it, here it is. Drink 10 pints of beer the night before the race. Ya got that? And don’t run a single step at least four weeks before the race.
Q: No running at all?
Joe: No, none at all. And don’t forget the 10 pints of beer the night before. But make sure you put a warning in this article, “Do not try this at home.” I mean, it works for me and Hunter Thompson but it might not work for others. I can only tell you what I do.

I have no health care costs, because I'm very healthy and not overweight.

Due to Dr. Lustig's large size, I believe he will have more of an impact on our healthcare costs than I will. A few studies would back that up.

Also, the occasional beer is most likely good for you. Everything in moderation!

Sorry can't receive the doc as an expert on obesity. He should be a better role model.

You do realize that the general attitude of pretty much every triathlete on this forum is totally unhealthy, do you?

I mean endurance training and running come with their fair share of injuries. That HAS to have an impact on healthcare costs too... Like everyone says: everything in moderation :-)

Dunno about *during* training, but certainly after.

I pretty much have 1 drink daily, sometimes 2.
But very rarely more than 3.

I've just finished my run, and have rewarded myself with an Old Tom (voted world's best ale in 2009) - very complex, yum, yum. This works for me: go train, have a reward. Horses for courses boyo, if missing-out on beer adds to your angst, then don't - there's enough to worry about before your first IM - but don't let it impact your training.

I recently shuffled my way through the Boston Marathon. I walked most of the hills, but at the base of Heart Break Hill a bunch of HHH's were giving out dixie cups of beer. I had two and actually ran up the stupid hill (only to find several people lying on the ground in the middle of the road at the top of the hill). The next day I went over to the Samuel Adams Brewery and got a really great free glass mug engraved with 2012 Boston Marathon on it. I forgot what the question was, but beer is the answer. Tim

Nothing wrong with beer. I give you science:

I also give you broscience: I hang out with roadies, and being one of the few people not tipsy after a single pint makes me feel like Grizzly Adams. Plus, the common podium prize in MI for CX rides and races held in celebrated beer cities (Grand Rapids, Frankenmuth) is usually a hefty amount of the good stuff. Count one or two into your daily calories and enjoy your relaxation and health benefits.

Last week, I had a beer at work about an hour before I left. On my commute home, I set a new PR for 1m power. I'm not sure if I am willing to see if that scales to FTP ;)

This is spot on, if you like beer, drink it. Have less cake, white bread, cookies, etc. to make up for it. If you control for the impacts on weight beer isn't going to slow you down. You're not going to be slower due to a few beers, you're going to be slower because you didn't do enough strength training or you skipped speed work on the track. I'm drinking more now than I have in the last few years based on work related social commitments and I'm faster than ever because I've been doing tons of mile repeats and other speed work. I think the correlation is very low.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
Minor move forward
Won't budge the needle
