What Bosses? Any chance of a photo.

The reason I ask is because I cannot see them on either on the Specialized site not any of the photos in the TriRig article.

Is there a relationship between the bosses and the crank - could it be a mounting point for sensors?

I also did not notice any additional bosses on a frame on display in our LBS in New Zealand.

I've been getting in to the whole triathlon picture, got my first tri bike, the new Shiv Comp and am wondering what the best "bang-for-buck" upgrades I can make will be. I'm consistently reading tires and wheels... but am wondering what to pay attention to/be alert for/etc. I'm a bigger rider @ about 230 lbs. if that makes any difference.

Does anyone have recommendations for mid-range wheels? I'm not looking to drop another $3k, but something in the $1000 to $1500 might be more plausible (and will that create a substantial difference?!). Are $80-$100 tires a better buy?

For all of you riding a new shiv tri in a size small… What are your pad stack and reach measurements? I’ve been really interested in the new shiv tri and attempted to get in touch with specialized a few times with no luck. My current bike’s pad stack is 625 and my pad reach is 475. I pulled up the 2012 shiv fit guide…
http://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/pdf/SHIVStack-Reach.pdf

And it look as though the medium is too tall (unless I use a low rise aerobar instead of the integrated one) and the small might be the best fit. I’m just wondering if my reach of 475 from the BB would end up putting too much weight over the front wheel and give me some handling issues.

What are your thoughts? Worst case scenario here is the bike won’t fit and ill move onto something else.

I currently have a small Shiv Tri. My stack is 540 my reach is 385 (all legs, short torso). I've been professionally fit. Prior to riding a Shiv, I rode a medium Transition.

Indeed, those are for mounting a Di2/Ui2 Bettery.

Mark,

I'm trying to fit an S-Works cage between the bars and I couldn't figure how you tie wrap yours. My cage is too low between my arm. Could you send more precises pictures of your setup please?

Thanks! Awesome bike BTW!

The Extension spacing is 110mm C-C and the stock ski-tips that come on the bike jog 10mm inward from each side (or can be swapped to go wider 10mm on each side). With rotation, you can get a pretty dialed fit.

There's room for a standard bottle cage or the X-Lab Torpedo. Here's a pic of my front end setup.

I owe you some better pictures, but this was recommend to me by our pro triathlon team mechanic, Jeff Donaldson. Using a Specialized Rib cage, we zip tied one tie on the back of the cage to both the left and right extension. In the front, we used several zip ties to create a platform for the "upper" water bottle bolt area and then zip tied that onto this "zip-tie" platform. This angles the bottle up a bit and is still easy to access and pretty stiff.

Hope that helps,

Mark

I have a new S-Works SHIV and had the bike shop cut the head tube down to the lowest control tower position to be used with the included Specialized carbon aerobars. The position is still not low enough so I want to change to a different stem and aero bar setup. The problem is that the Specialized stem stack height is only 30mm and most manufacturers make stems with a 40mm stack height.
I had no idea that when I had the head tube cut that I would be losing the option to use an aftermarket Aerobar configuration.

Any suggestions or solutions?

Does anyone know if the integrated stem/bar option is available aftermarket yet? I really want the Shiv Expert because I like the color, but I'd also like the aero stem/carbon bar of the Shiv Pro.

The Specialized aerobars will be available this summer -- will likely be around July in stores. We had to make sure we could hit demand for bikes first, thus the bars weren't available aftermarket immediately when the Shiv launched.

The alloy bar on the Shiv Expert is identical fit to the carbon bar. So you could build and race with the Expert out of the box and then upgrade to the carbon barset during the summer.

Yep, I was aware of the dealers not having them at launch in order to meet demand of the bikes. Wasn't sure if they were out now aftermarket or what. Thanks for the info!

So, the fit for the rider is identical, but what about aero? I assume the integrated bars are more aero than the non-integrated of the Expert/Comp models, right? Or is it just the integration of the stem that changes the aero?

Aerodynamically, would I be better off waiting for the integrated bars to come out, or to just grab a pro missile evo (or, whatever top-end bar) and slapping that on the Shiv Expert's standard stem?

Really appreciate the answers, thanks!

Shiv brake lever recall question [ In reply to ]
Question - I have the TL-720 brake levers on my Shiv - does this recall apply to my bike? The description below is unclear...

http://www.cpsc.gov/.../prhtml12/12151.html

"Description: The recalled products are Tektro TL-83 brake levers. TL-83 levers are designed exclusively for use with aerodynamic handlebars (aerobars) sold as original equipment on 2010 and 2011 S-Works Shiv bicycle frame modules and 2012 S-Works Shiv TT bicycle frame modules. They are also sold as aftermarket service parts for these modules. The levers are modified versions of the TL-720 brake lever. They are black aluminum and have a quick release slot at the top of the lever arm. Model number “TL-720” can be read on the side of the lever arm when braking action is applied."

Mark - are you guys going to release the base bars in different widths? I have the Pro but I really need some wider base bars. I run my Venge and Tarmacs with the FSA 440mm bars. It would be great if you guys had at least a slightly wider bar than what comes on them stock.

I raced on the Shiv Pro SRAM Red today for the first time and loved it! I posted the fastest bike split in the race. My one question is if you have any suggestions for how to get the drink straw to stay put? Every time I hit bumps on my ride it falls down. I would love to see a small fork like clamp instead of the magnet...something I could just stick the straw in so it wouldn't bounce around. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I love the ride. Crosswinds were terrible today but the Shiv handled them to perfection! Thanks for designing such an AWESOMELY fast ride!

This recall is for the brake levers included on Shiv TT modules. These have threaded stops that act as quick releases on the lever. We have changed the design to no longer have the quick release feature.

On all of the Shiv (not Shiv TT) bikes, framesets, and modules, the brake levers are not affected by this recall and are good to go.

We aren't currently planning on releasing another width outside of the 410mm bars that are spec-ed today. While I'd like to make something around 360/380 and some 420's or 440's, we haven't tooled these yet.

There is a bigger magnet for the silicone strap part that is coming available this summer -- a 12mm diameter by 4mm thick magnet is in this new strap. With the "open" style bite valve and this new magnet, we're able to ride here without any issues on the biggest bumps and fastest descents.

The open style bite valve has a bigger magnet in it than the other bite valve. Try this out first and see if it fixes your problems -- it does for most. Secondly, if you prefer the "closed" bite valve, then remove the magnet from the
open bite valve and electrical tape it to your extensions. This will give you a bit more magnetic force than the current silicone strap.

Either way, the solution is more magnetic force.

As soon as the new magnetic silicone strap is available, I will post the information to the forum.

Hi Mark
I posted a question a few days ago and was hoping you may have a solution.
When you are using the integrated areobars and want the stack tower in the lowest position you must cut the headtube down to 30mm to add the included integrated stem topcap. Once you make this cut you can no longer use an after market aerobar because there isn't a single stem (that I could find) that has a 30mm stack height.
If there isn't a solution then there should be a warning or a reconfigure of the stem topcap to accommodate leaving a 40mm stem height.
Please let me know my my options are.
Thanks for your time.

I stuffed a 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch rare earth magnet in the current knog and it works beautifully! absolutely locks both mouth pieces in place without any chance of it slipping.

Mark any chance that those of us with th Shiv TT will be able to buy extensions to replace the standard ones that come with the module?

I have finally finished (well mostly) my Shiv Ui2 project. It was not that difficult once I figured out what i wanted to do and use for parts and such. I did run into a few issues that had to be overcome but nothing that difficult. All in all it came out pretty clean looking and all that is left to wire up the remote switches on the bullhorns. This process will be easy as the wires to the shifter black box are already in place and just need to be connected to the cat eye buttons I have.
Have only done the around the block so far but the shifting is crisp and quick. The bike needs fitting as well. The stem/spacers are going to get changed and removed as it is too short and too high for now.

Here are the pics.

Here are the custom made shifters. I bought a carbon fiber tube cut and drilled holes for waterproof switches and put the back box inside carbon tube which then slid over the aero extension.

pretty clean cockpit...

and finally the battery lives inside the seat post. This was one of the more difficult parts. I had to cut and grind down battery mount so it would fit down the seat tube. This took a while to get just small enough but once it was it slide right in and the battery is fixed in the post.

Now I need to get out and ride!!!

Looks great! I'm impressed by your work on the DIY Ui2.

When/if the Ui2 TT shifters come out, are you planning on switching to those? What was your total cost on the DIY shifters?

I just ordered my Shiv Expert yesterday, so hopefully it will be in late this week and I'll start thinking about whether to DIY Ui2 or just do the standard DA Di2.
