How Much Does Your Tri Bike Weigh?
I know weight is not the most important factor in a tri bike, but on a hilly course it is a consideration and data is hard to come by, so this is a survey that should be useful if enough people answer without exaggeration. Here's mine:

2012 Specialized Shiv Expert
Dura Ace components
Alloy specialized aerobar
DT Axis 2.0 wheels
Adamo Road saddle

Weight: 20.5 pounds.

I did not know about that database, but it looks like there are not many tri bikes in there... I checked for Spec, Trek, Orbea and Look and none of their tri frames were there.... But it looks great for a lot of components!

Yeah i searched a few months ago. Very few tri bikes listed. Even some of the main stream tri bikes are absent.

In fact, the last road frame on that list is from 2009. It's horribly outdated. I know the forums there are active, and I wonder why the listings aren't updated any more?

How heavy is the engine?
More importantly, how strong is the engine?

If the answers to these two questions indicate a fairly positive response then the bike weight doesn't really matter much.

Oh, oh, oh. I want to play!

Just swaped out my cockpit and seat last week to upgrade. Put race wheels on this morning and couldn't resist the temptation to weigh it. I know weight is a minor consideration on a TT bike but I can't help myself.

Thanks for posting your data! So far we have 3 data points: 20.5, 19.5, 18.34 - so far mine's the heaviest but even on a tough climb I don't think I could blame the 2 pound difference if you beat me. When I upgrade wheels and tires maybe I can come down 0.5 to 1 lb while also getting more aero.

SRAM Red

Zipp Vuma Chrono Crank
Zipp 808 wheels (Clydesdales)

Weight 17.1

Weight has probably changed because I have swapped out the crank for a SRAM Red Quarq.

Funny my Parlee XL frame weighs the same as Speed Concept Small.

I would think it is a combination of your weight and the bike's weight that would affect your hill climbing. Losing 1.5lbs on your body, would in theory drop 1.5lbs from your total bike/body weight when climbing. Same weight loss if your stripped 1.5lbs from your bike. Other thoughts?

Imagine what it would cost to drop 1.5lbs from your bike. And my body weight fluctuates more than that on an average day.

How about 'dropping weight from your bike and dropping weight from your body can both be done utterly independent of one another'? You made it sound as if you gotta choose between the two... Why not drop all 3lbs in this example?

According to Velo magazine about -$800. ;-). Or at least that was the differenece between two road bikes they recently tested. The cheaper bike was about 1.5 pounds lighter.

That information was from last summer so I weighed it again this evening. It's still 8.4kg. By the time I've taken a few centimeters off the steerer tube, fitted the new pedals; I changed system over the winter, and fitted the Omega brake when it arrives, It'll drop another 100g or so.

I'd take yours back to the shop and ask for a lighter one. In the nicest way possible of course;-)

Well, I have a new medium SC 7.2 and it weighs in at approx 18.6 lbs based on my bathroom scale. Swapped the aero bars and base bar for a full zipp setup I bought in a weak moment a few years ago (blew my bike frugality creds for that year!), and swapped the wheels for some Rolf Vigors. Includes one bottle cage (I do long rides on the road bike and no long course racing, so one is enough). Swapped saddle for a Cobb V-flow but that added weight. Otherwise, stock Sram stuff that came with it. No draft box, bento box, rear bottle cages, etc. etc.; people add all that stuff and wonder why they don't have a light bike.

Of course when I get my Flo 60 race wheels I'll be adding almost 400 grams so that will bring it back up way over 19 pounds.

It goes up the hills much better than my old P2K (not that the 10 lbs I lost over the winter has anything to do with that, lol).

Though not a tri bike, my 2012 Trek Madone 4.7 is 19 lbs.

Ultegra components, cassette 105
Bontrager Race wheels and carbon seatpost
It does an excellent job soaking up most of the bumps in the road (compared to aluminum).
After using an aluminum Giant TCX cross bike for commuting, riding this Madone feels like I've got nothing underneath me.
I chose this one not only for the components and price point, but, for the color scheme (more visible in traffic).

56cm Plasma 2
Dura Ace
Sora crank at the moment as I'm experimenting with crank length
Speedplay Zeros stainless steel

Adamo Road
Shimano RS-10 wheels w/ Michelin Krylions

With race wheels/tires and a decent crank I think it would be around 19 or 19.5 lbs.

I can only afford to run one nice bike, so it's not a TT machine, but a Specialized SL4 Sworks.

A shade over 13lbs for normal road use, and bang on 14lbs with aerobars for triathlons. (Wheels are Mavic Carbone Ultimate, so they are happy in both disciplines, light and reasonably aero).

Needless to say, I prefer hilly courses.....!

Glen, great crank cover and fairing. Off weight topic question regarding your power meter set up. You may have changed your set up but I had seen a pic of your set up and it looked like you had your cyclops shark fin hooked up to an ant+ transmitter. Is that the case? Can you describe how you did that with perhaps a parts source list if it is not too much trouble? I have a few wired power tap wheels that I would like to use on another bike WITHOUT external cabling and preferably ant+ to hook w my garmin and I would like to avoid the expense of buying new hubs. Thanks and feel free to pm me as this question is not thread specific. CL

Hello RowToTri and All,

18.5

P3C 54 with SRM - Ventus Bar - Rotor rings - Zipp 404 Front - Zip 1080 Rear

Ti Speedplay pedals with aluminum butterfiles.

Titanium or Aluminum fastners throughout where appropriate.

Full flat kit with Ti wrench and tire tools - spare latex tube and patches - 2 Co2 Carts - small can of pressurized sealant.

No water bottles (except flat kit).

Note View-Speed.com aero front and rear titanium skewer at about 19 grams rear and a bit less for the front.

Small individual weight and aero savings here and there add up for a lighter and faster bike.

Cheers,

2012 Zipp 808 Firecrest Carbon Clincher front
2011 Zipp Hed Jet Disc with Powertap Pro+ rear
Adamo Racing 2 saddle
Shimano Dura Ace 7900 shifters, front and rear derailleur, 11-28 cassette, and pedals
Rotor 165mm 3D+ crank with Rotor 53/39 chainrings.
Carbon water bottle cage
22m Bontrager R4 tires with latex tubes pumped to 110 PSI
Bottle and computer in picture NOT included when weighed.

I could drop over half a pound from the rear wheel by going with a 2012 Hed Jet disc FR + Powertap G3. Not clear it's worth the $$$ though.

2011 Felt B10. Stock with the following additions:

with a heavier Profile Design tri stryke saddle (310g)
X-lab aero cage (29g)
torhans mount up front (no bottle) not sure of weight, probably 50-60g with zip ties
Pedals: Look Keo max 2 (260g)
garmin edge 500 mount- but no garmin

so that's about 1.5lbs of extra stuff. the stock seat was lighter, so maybe 1.2lbs.

20.7 lbs

the TTR3 wheels are pretty heavy. I weighed the rear, without skewer or cassette and it was 1070 g.
Just built up a Powertap SL+ on a Kinlin XR 380 (38mm aluminum clincher which is 565g in the rim alone), with Sapim CX-rays and it came out at 1110g. Only 40g more.

My weight scale says 180lbs, and 200lbs when I'm holding the bike. :-D

So I guess 20lbs roughly.

Specialized Shiv 2012
SRAM Red
SRAM S60 front SRAM S80 back

18.43- Nice!
A set of Zipp 404 tubulars are about 1.7lbs less than the Felt TTR3's. that's huge- especially on wheels. -most of the difference right there,
all but 0.57lbs (260g). I'll bet the SRAM Red even with the quarq is probably lighter than the stock Vision Trimax cranks, so that buys you the rest.

Could probably save another pound with a different cockpit I expect, although the stock one is pretty aero.

maybe if I get rid of all those spacers and cut my headset tube down I'll save another 50g. ;)

Scott Plasma Premium. Stock weight: 16.52lbs

I have 3T Brezza Bars on mine though, which might shave a few ounces here and there but I probably lost that with the Cobb saddle.

I love how some people on this forum know the weight of their skewers, and others used a bathroom scale to figure it out - interesting. Most people aren't posting sizes either, so I'm not sure how that affects your data and how useful it is. I ride a size 61 tarmac, but a short female (or male) riding a 44cm stock 650c carbon bike could come in with some crazy weight.

56 cm Argon 18, Aluminum - I think it was made in the mid-2000s.
Saddle bag w/flat kit
Syntace Aero Bars
Mavic Ksyrium wheels

You can easily drop a pound from the Shiv by swapping the stock wheels for some aero race wheels.

I don't know how much my tri bike weighs but I do know I should cut off some of the excess seat post. It's massive on my Trek E9.

Damn, most of the bikes posted here are as light as my road bike (BMC SLR01 in 51).

I have an Orbea Ordu OMP (similar to M20 stock), weighs around 20.4 pounds.
