Practice 40k this morning- 1:06:32 for 24.80 miles, avg 22.3mph

Conditions: Sunny, 65F, 4-6mph wind out of the west.

Course has three hard stops (crossing busy roads, turnaround) and two soft stops (turns on busy roads), and is slightly rolling with ~500ft of climb over the course. Course is an out and back, starts due W, turns due S, then a turnaround.

Rode on the tri bike, with aerohelmet. Used training wheels (27mm, 18/24) with training tires and butyl tubes (Race wheels are H3s with Bonty Aerowings and latex tubes, so I probably left at least a minute on the table). Round bottle on DT because I forgot to wash my aerobottle. Negative split by 90+ seconds, even though the second half is slightly uphill. Can't say I felt great, but this is by far my fastest TT effort ever. .6mph faster than 1 month ago, same bike, same conditions.

I ignored the challenge for a long time figuring I'd never get around to doing one...now I click on this thread and see that people are adding their triathlon bike splits(?!), I'll chime in.

I've been off the bike for a while enjoying my offseason but the last time I raced and/or rode in anger was in January this year...looks like my first 40km from this HIM just sneaks in:

Unfortunately the next 40km was just over (1:00:2x). Final split 2:15:58.

Flat, out & back, non-technical (4 x 180s, 5 or 6 x 90s) 2 lap course, light winds, 50-50 mix of smooth urban roads & typical NZ chipseal. Spent maybe 50ish % riding solo or leading a small group, 40% of the ride at 2nd wheel (legal distance) and the balance somewhere between the two.

blood, sweat...and big gears

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.''

Probably heading down to fiesta island next Sunday morning starting around 7 or 8 for 6 wonderful loops. Is that still a safe time/day to do so during the summer? The last thing I want is unleashed dogs running around...

Earlier the better. I'd say 8:00 is pushing it for lack of obstacles...i.e. other people/dogs.

this saturday would have been a good day for me to break the hour, the monthly TT was low on wind, times were fast, but my car crash derailed it.

the state TT is in a month, I'm on the trainer for another week, going to try and bike focus and get this done.

Will have a P3 Carbon now though, should give me a free 30 seconds or so over my aluminum p3!

Okay, I'll probably start the 40K around 6:30ish. Are there any other days of the week that are more empty than Sunday?

This was my first real attempt to break 60 min for 40k. Me and 6 other guys decided to deck out the bikes and race the clock...some current guys from the University of Alabama Tri Club and some ex guys. Started in 2 minute intervals in a rough descending order of how fast we thought we could go. Everyone did awesome. Weather wasn't too hot, but it was pretty humid. It hit me this morning, however, that our course may not be "legit". There's a really good super flat 8 mile section in Tuscaloosa, so we did an out/back/out/and then turned around for the last ~1 mile. So, elevation wise it's not a big deal...winds weren't too high, but I'd say we were ever so slightly advantaged with a slight tailwind on the 2 "out" parts of the course. So...can I claim this as legit, or does it have to be an out-and-back or a loop?

For the sake of amateur sport, I'm gonna rule this one legit. Nice work.

Although olympic tri splits are 40K, there are a few things to consider:
1) the courses are often less than 40K. I've seen this here in Southern California a few times.
2) human traffic on the course can either hinder or harm times.

Again, it's not too important to get caught up in the details of this challenge. In reality it's not that hard to just post a time on here and say you did it. Along those lines, it's most important to do a ride that YOU are confident in. And, going 40K all-out takes a bit of determination and mental fortitude. I don't know about you guys, but I've never done an olympic bike leg all-out (minus a relay I did). In that regard, attempting the 40K challenge and not breaking the hour is better than not trying at all.

Finally had an official 40k TT in our area last week so I decided to give it a go again this year.
Church Creek TT in Cambridge Maryland. Course is completely flat, but since it is right off the Chesapeake Bay, winds are always the major factor at play. This was the 1st ever 40k TT I did which was last year - finishing time was 1:01:41. Learned more about pacing since then so thought I'd give it another go this year. Finishing time this year was 0:59:40 so I was pretty excited to break sub 60 as well as take 2 minutes off my time. Same bike as last year other than lowered my profile as well as replaced my Planet X 82/101 wheels with a Tri spoke front Disc rear so I may have just bought $$ my sub 60.

I thought the course was tough due to 3/4 of the route was headwind or cross winds so I was pretty excited about my time.....then I get a look at the overall results and looks like almost everyone and their grandmothers were going sub 60. Looks like sub 58 is more of a big deal now days at least in my region. I registered in the Masters 45+ race, but they had me with the Cat 4 race - Just in the Cat 4 race 18 out of the 25 were sub 60 with the winner at 54:50 (Masters 45+ races was pretty much the same as well). The overall race winner was 46 years old and ran something like a 52.

Well I think I am there. Did a 01:01:57 or 24.1mph today at the Silicon Valley Tri which was .1 long and has a Cat 5 climb in it. I think I am going to go up to Davis for the next 40k Wednesday night Putah Creek TT and see what I can do on a flat 40k without a swim or run to worry about.

I was thinking, that Map looks very familiar. I did the Metro triathlon about a month before the SVIT on the same course. We had massive headwind on the way out =( and i was on a trek madone 6 series with t1 aero bars. My time was 1:07mins. =( After looking at some of the times here i realize i'm super slow. =(

so i thought of this thread yesterday while riding a 65 mile loop back home in indiana. i was 38 miles into it when the road sign said 27 miles back home. there was only 1 stop sign(can see all directions for 0.5 miles and no one was in sight anywhere) and no stop lights until the city limit. it was only my 2nd or 3rd time out on my TT bike this year (i love my road bike). previous 3 days were--friday-2hr bike with 1hr at 90% ftp, sat-13mile easy run in 1:30, sunday-50mile bike, monday 65 mile bike with 40k TT thrown in.
2008 specialized transition, catlike whisper+ helmet, short sleeve jersey, water bottle in my middle jersey pocket, regular shallow neuvation wheels, butyl tubes, old pro race 3 tires, decent pavement, no wind, slight to moderate rain. 758ft of elevation gain, 350 loss (garmin 500). this was measured point to point.
ended up at 25miles.
avg watts 292, just looked at the avg split over that lap. haven't downloaded the ride.
58:09, 25.8mph( i think that's right).
so how much faster with my 808s with new corso evo cx and aero helmet and in a regular TT race?

Nice work. You're really fortunate to live in an area where you can have that kind of uninterrupted riding.

There's an easy way to find out. Let us know how it goes. ;)

Since it looks like other people are using triathlon bike splits, I did 2:11:07 or 25.63 mph for my most recent half ironman. It was a little windy, but it was pancake flat course.

I thought I'd add my most recent TT with the Hamilton Cycling Club. I've been collecting data with a powertap this season and I'm trying to wrap my head around how to use this information to train smarter. Any insights would be appreciated. One of the goals today was to establish my FTP.

Distance - 38.4km (it was supposed to be 40k, but the guy running the turnaround cut the course a little short. Why? I don't know).
Average Speed - 41.3kph
Average Power - 256watts
Average Cadence - 100rpm
Average HR -164bpm

On the way out, you can see that it was downhill with a slight tailwind. Unfortunately, on the way back, it was the opposite :).

Finally got a couple in this past weekend, one on Saturday(State TT) and one on Sunday (Midwest regional ie ABR).

Neither was stellar,as Saturday, the course was eating people and spitting them out. Extra rough pavement and a long course(25.15mi) saw about half the usual number of sub 1 hour times,(25% instead of 50+%)

On awful avg watts, but teeth still intact, I went 53:04(299w avg) 350' elev gain/loss, 77deg F

Sunday, decided to try again, drove further to a flatter course

On awful avg watts, I went 52:01(299w avg) 70' elev gain/loss, 91deg F

Where the first day beat one up, the second sapped with heat. Was holding target W until mile 9 on day 2, when things started to fall apart. 325 avg became 250-60 by mile 18. I pulled it back together near the end with 342 for last half mile, but had some chills in between. Water might have been a good idea and so might have vents in the helmet(selector)

That is my back to back days of 40ks for the year. One more to go, if course construction finishes before end of August.

1st overall both times (2:11 Sat and 1:32 Sun(new course record)) We don't have the fast CA guys here in the midwest.

Watts were awful. I did a nice 330w for 30k a couple weeks back which was on target for that event. Sun, may be off, as I may have calibrated too soon, ie before hub was fully warmed up. I blame the nuke plant there for issues,as my Garmin 500 does not like to operate properly there. Had a calibration error 1st try, never seen that before. However, given the heat and humidity, I'd say it was pretty close to right.

Was nice hitting the turn around at 24:40 but bad in that it was headwind return.

From Saturday's rough pavement ride:

59:31 on a course that is a tiny bit long (25.0). Compared to last year, my watts were down (243 vs. 252) but my position is better leading to a 44 second improvement (59:31 vs. 60:15) on same course, same equipment, same weather.
Phil

Edit: did add a Simpkins egg brake on the front and changed the water bottle so I guess I shouldn't have said same equipment, but it was the same bike, wheels, helmet, me, etc.

Whether you broke the hour or not, you are free to post results here

I just did my first (personal) 40k TT.
The time was 1:07:06 at the 40km marker.
I was hoping for 1:05 but i am still very happy, it was great fun.
I think i will be able to do 1:05 some time this summer.
I even removed the 3 front-lights and battery-pack from my bike.

The course is a perfect 10km traffic-free road, so i had 3 180° turnarounds.
I dont think my pacing was very good. The first quarter i was too fast. On the second quarter i overtook another guy and tried to shake him off but failed, which really exhausted me (you can see that at 00:30). Therefore on the second half i was noticeably slower.

Did 29.35 for 20k Saturday with 600 feet climbing in it. 280 W average, 285 NP at 5200 feet elevation. 140 pounds here, so I'm pretty happy with those numbers. Flat 40k in Moriarty in early September and am looking to go well under an hour.
