How's this?

Any better views anyone want to see? C'mon, we want some intertube diagnoses.

(the MRI tech said these were outstanding images, as I didn't budge for 50 minutes)

How'd that happen? Are you going to go to physical therapy?

PT? Ha. Surgery on 2/28. Actually, the PT made it worse, it appears. Between that and the contrast injection, it hurts now more than at any time since I first noted it about 9 months ago. Raced all of 2010 on it, too.

At least my surgeon is an Ironman.

that'll do it every time.
Good luck (although really I wonder why we don't wish the surgeon luck in these situations... I mean you are just going to be lying there), speedy recovery and full recovery!

O.K., I will play.

Did you do any hip movement exercice after the contrast was injected? How symptomatic is it? I see a potential scope in your future (green arrow)!

Cheers!

how painful is your hip now? just curious b/c my wife is in the same boat as you. she has a tear in hers and a small cyst but she's not sure if she wants to do the surgery. it's not too bad for her right now. (she turns 30 in march). no kids for us yet but we're thinking about it soon. her orthopedic surgeon has given her options and since it's not very painful to her, he said she could wait. any thoughts from anyone out there?

Ken, that sucks, sorry to hear this. YMMV but Azteca had a similar tear that went sour half way through her first half-IM. It's been 2 years since the surgery and she's still not really happy with the result (she went to a nationally-known leader in hips). But then she also had the neck of her femur shaved down and a surprise bonus release of the psoas! We think it may be the latter that still plagues her. Good luck!

Do you mean scope beyond the surgery I'm already getting?

No, injection and MRI, then home. My ortho said there was markedly less flexibility in my left hip than my right, but the PT didn't note that (or any strength imbalances).

I have the entire set of films, if there's anything you think might be interesting to see. eFilm Lite is the software.

good luck with your surgery Ken, i am in the same boat but after i had the contrast injection they went back in and gave me a cortisone cocktail. i have to say that gave me about a 90% return to normal for me, and that was 3 months ago.

My surgeon gave me that option, so I could race this year and have the surgery next fall. I asked him what the risk was, and he said "repairable vs. non-repairable."

That was a no-brainer for me.

Sorry Ken, I was posting while you were replying and announce the surgery date. The scope will obvious tell the tale. As long as there is no significant arthritic changes in the joint you should do well... now shoulders that is another story.

Good Luck!

I have to ask, what were the symptoms that took you in to get this checked out, Ken?

Started last spring, IIRC. I'd have this dull pain in my hip off and on, but not while riding or running. Every once in a while, I'd stand up from a chair and I felt like my left hip was going to collapse and drop me on my butt. Finally, in December, the final symptom was that I had $600 left in my health care reimbursement account, so I thought I'd have it checked out :-)

I raced very well (for an old guy) last year, so go figure.

That would be a "sign" Ken not a "symptom" ;0)

Thanks, Ken. I'm going to get checked out soon and have had some issues in my hip and now foot pain and calf strains since having a wreck a couple of years ago. Its funny, the wreck was minor...in fact I got up and finished second in the race. But something has been off since then. I've had a dull ache in my hip since then, but different from yours...it is sometimes aggravated by excercise. Anyway...sounds like you've got a road forward. Keep us posted.

I had a torn Labrum and a cyst in 2003. I had it scoped and the labrum was beyond repair so the Ortho cleaned it out and did a microfratcure. My symtoms were on the inside of the groin with raditating pain down the quad. I did an ironman about a year or so after the surgery. I had limited range of motion most noticable on the bike. It began to go south again and had to see the ortho. This time I went to Midwest orthopedics in Chicago. Dr. Nho was my physician. He did an injection to see if it helped the pain and then did an arthrogram. It showed more labrum tearing, like the end of a rope, and an irregular shape of my femoral head. He said he could go in and shave the bone down to give me more range of motion and clean up the joint if needed. It was almost a six hour surgery. He shaped the head of my femur and cleaned up the jonit again. That was in the fall of 2009. I did IM louisville this past August with no pain. However I do get pain when i am sitting for a longer period of time. I think most of that is due to arthric changes in the joint. Stretching doesn't help much in my case. I am going to try the lubrication injection to help limit the pain from arthritus. I am sure I am headed for a re-surfacing surgery and then eventually a new hip. I am hoping that technology catches up and allows me to have more options.
