The Official Ask Me Any Questions About IMC Thread

First off, thanks for all the nice words from the Slowtwitch crowd. Anyway, if you all have any questions about the race, I'll do my best to answer them.

EDIT: I don't know any power data YET, other than from "in the race" checking of the computer and targets.

Just wanted to say congrats! Been following your blog for a while and it's great to see you win IMC

Can you give us the lowdown on your power numbers from the day, and how they compare to your CP60 etc (or would that be giving too much away to your competition? :) )

Is that the fastest marathon you have ever run?

Did you have time goals, did you meet them?

And are you now going to stick with tubulars for racing? Congrats BTW, I don't remember if I posted that on any of the other threads or not!

Yes, it's the fastest marathon I've ever run. It was slower than my time goal by about 2minutes. I planned to run 2:52-2:53 and I ran ~ 2:54 if you subtract "celebration time." :)

//

That's my SECOND Kiwami banner of the year, and it feels just as good every time (thanks Andre!).

I don't know if I will stay with tubulars for every race. I think especially when you are traveling, being able to easily train on clinchers is a big peace of mind. That being said, I think in men's pro racing, where it's quite difficult to win ANY race changing a flat, that tubulars may be slightly better.

Congrats Jordan!

Can you please share your nutrition strategy for the day. Just wondering, because mine sucked. I passed you on the run down lakeshore - you .2 miles to go, and I had about 25 to go. You looked great!

My "in it to win it" plan was a can of Hutchinson FastAir.

My "finish the race" plan was a Tufo S3 Light (they roll up the smallest of any tire and are durable) and a razor blade. I figured I could change my tire in maybe 15-20min (I use Alan's "proper gluing procedure").

Congratulations! Is this the biggest win of your career? I assume you'll be racing Kona?

Congrats on the win! Thanks for being a pro that's available for us AGers :).

Here's what I wanna know.

1. Power info. Ap, np, how u wanted to ride the course
2. Nutrition info
3. Run pacing. You perfectly split the marathon. Was that on purpose. Did you decide on that pace ahead of time? How did u track ur pace? Watch or by feel?

Thanks again and impressive performance!

You probably would have had time to change a flat yesterday...

The Question: When did you start thinking about your finish line celebration?

Thanks...sounds reasonable...for a pro man, that is ;-)

Now then, why are you avoiding my first question? :-P

Jordan,

Congrats, I'll be interested to see:
  • Calories per hour
  • Sodium Per hour
  • volume of liquid per hour

Are you going to do fall AZ or Florida or are you going to go to kona to "get experience"

First off, Congrats! it was fun in '07 watching you as a late-entry come in and do so well.

I have a couple mental-aspect questions...

Did you come in knowing you had a shot at winning, or did you figure it out along the way as the race unfolded? When did you know?

Were there any low-points, where you had to do any self pep-talking?

And a training question:

Are you gonna do 800's, or hill-repeats for your run today?

Jordan, no questions but I wanted to say a huge congrats!

The one good thing to come out of my DNF was to have the pleasure of watching you finish (you made Elisabeth cry!) So well earned and it was great to see you soak it up!

Unbelieveable!

Why Tubulars??? I have always seen you as a big proponent of clinchers mostly for technical/advantage reasons and not plain convenience, was I wrong.

BTW congrats for a great all around race, I think there is more success in your future for the progression I have seen, good job.

Peace

Congrats Jordan!

Can you please share your nutrition strategy for the day. Just wondering, because mine sucked. I passed you on the run down lakeshore - you .2 miles to go, and I had about 25 to go. You looked great!
I actually took in too many calories. Or rather, I think, too much caffeine, as I had a bit of stomach distress. Not cramps, but let's just my race suit REALLY needed to be washed.

Anyway, I had my normal big breakfast - 1200cals, which was probably a bit too much. Probably didn't need my second 1/2 bowl of cereal.

Then I had one scoop of EFS with one scoop of PreRace ~20min before the start

On the bike, I premix my carry-with-me bottles with salt. My bottles are ~200 cals with a LOT of salt. I add 3x SaltStick capsules to each bottle. I had a 24oz. bottle between the bars, and an Arundel Crono with the same mixture on the frame. And I had another bottle in special needs. Each one has 1 scoop (96cals) of EFS + 2 (small) scoops of ClifShot Crisp Apple + 3x SaltStick. I had all three of those. I also had 4 x Gu Roctane (too much caffeine when I added it all up from the Roctane and ClifShot). And one gel flask with ~400 cals of EFS liquid shot + 3x SaltStick in it. I needed extra salt because it was regular gatorade, not gatorade endurance, on the course. I also had 4 x gatorade bottles = total of 2000 calories, which is a bit on the high side. 1800 is closer to correct + 1000 at breakfast and less caffeine. I also had 6 additional salt stick capsules over the course of the ride.

On the run, I had a gel flask, but my stomach didn't want it, so I just canned it. I had one or two gatorades and a pepsi at every aid station.

I actually didn't expect to even split. But it's very hard once you decide to slow down to actually control it. I just ran what felt "natural," though I felt REALLY slow at the start. I had a plan for pace. I raced with my Garmin 310, taking 5km splits.
