Aero Penalty of Wrist Watch
I'm looking to get an idea of how much of a penalty wearing a standard wrist watch would create on the bike. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unless you're in the olympics, probably not enough, and negligible.

Probably too small to measure in a tunnel (you could CFD an estimate). In aero, it is drafting behind your hand anyway.

Appreciate the feedback guys. I was more curious than anything. Figured if something as trivial as leg and arm hair could create drag so could a watch. Thank you for the time to answer.

Standard wrist watch....then you have the Garmin 920xt. I suspect there are probably a few watts....if you haven't upgraded and are still wearing the 910 laptop version, you are probably losing 5-10 watts.

Pff.....ha ha ha...I have no fricken clue...actually the comment about it being hidden behind the hand is probably accurate, though that 920 does stick out there quite a bit.

Could someone please tell me the aero penalty for not cutting off the zipper pull on my tri top/suit? It's just hanging there catching wind, right? How about letting my ear hair grow? Or nose hair? I'm giving away time, right?

I'm sure it causes drag. 910 and 920s are huge watches. I prefer not to have it on the bike. I just use a 510 on the bike.

This pro decided it caused too much drag for her during wind tunnel testing

From this aero test it showed to negate the benefit of running a disc. In other words get a bike computer.

Thanks for the information. Apparently, a watch (granted a big one), can negate a $2000 dollar wheel. At least I don't feel quite as dumb for asking :) Thanks again.

The best bet is to get the 510 and put it between your aerobars. You don't need a 910/920 in a swim. You don't need it for T1/T2. On the bike, you can't see the data if it's on your wrist the whole time. The only time you really use it is on the run. Why not buy a 510 and a 220/620 run watch for the same price as a 920 and have a much better and aero setup

Or if you are FOP just learn how to race by feel. Easier said than done though.

The big hand will create more drag than the little hand.... wait a minute- are we talking digital or analogue?

I need numbers when I'm racing. The only time my 910 really worked for me was when I used it with a quick release. I left it on the bike during the swim and put it on my wrist in T2. However, the 510 is much better than a watch ever will be

Nope, specialized has said that their tunnel can consistently tell the difference between no watch and a watch.

I think this is the entire reason I'm getting slower as I get older. I guess I should start waxing both my ears and nose. :)

I wonder if that's the case for the aero position (with the watch shielded by the hands?

I can certainly see it for road positions, where the wrist is sticking up in clean air.

Love for the Win Tunnel guys to weigh in #aeroiseverything

I usually work on an if in doubt get rid basis. If it's not specifically there to improve aerodynamics and you can find a way to make do without it then there is no disadvantage to ditching it.

I'm sorry, was that a report on aero testing or an article promoting her sponsors?

Less than a Garmin or most computers. Shaving your eyebrows off would save more time.

I'm soo shaving my eye brows and slicing of my ears for my next race.

All kidding aside, my new Vivoactive feels much better (more aero) on the wrist than the old fr220, not to speak of the 910 before that.

In a world where we're discussing the proper position of drinking straws, I think it's not too crazy to think about the block on the wrist.

Some watches are very chunkey these days.

I'm sticking to my Rolex Oyster, it's a bit heavy but I've had it since 1982 and it's never let me down.

That's what I used to think. ST is powerful for the marketing crowd, and I don't own the forum servers, so my only choice is to ignore.

A wrist watch worn face-in when you are on the aerobar extensions likely has a nearly zero aero penalty. Worn in other orientations, or on a road bike? Who knows?

However, the drag of a wrist watch in the swim? Not trivial. In a one mile swim, (depending on your stroke length of course) one of your arms cycles into the water nearly 700 times. Even a small amount of additional drag and turbulence on the entry quickly adds up. Don't wear a watch in the swim.
