stronglight crank on old QR Kilo private reserve
Quote | Reply
HI All,

Happy New Year

I recently found an old QR Kilo Private Reserve in pretty good shape but needs some work.

It'll be easy to swap out new brakes, derailleurs, cables, etc, but??

Does anyone know if I will be able to change to a compact crank instead of the original Stronglight crank?
Also, if i cannot change the Stronglight crank which has (53/36) chainrings, would it be possible to change the chainrings to get closer to a 50/34?

Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Joe

If it's truly got a 36T small chainring, then it's already compact. Smallest you can fit on a 130bcd crank is a 38 (and even that is a special case). So you should be able to swap out for compact 'rings (110bcd) no problem. The 'ring spacing, however, might be an issue.

The good news is that you would be able to swap out to any English threaded crankset/BB currently on the market.

as i recall, that is a 130mm bolt pattern crank. i might be wrong, but i think so, and if so, you don't have a 36t on there. but if you DO have a 36t on there then it's a 110mm bolt pattern crank and you can put the 50/34 on there. so, count the teeth, or look at what's printed on the back of the ring.

that bike is very likely a threaded 68mm english BB. if you want to get the crank you're talking about you'll need to get an older style "squarehole" crank because that's the BB that went with that crank. now, what was the spindle length? maybe it was 103mm? mind, you're taking me back maybe 25 years. i think cobb, and perhaps FSA, will have a crank that would match that BB, if you don't want to get another BB.

Pretty sure those were actually 110bcd, you were ahead of your time.

FSA does still have a couple of square taper crank models available, I think Cobb sold through what they had left a little while back.
