Today's womens race was for Juniors (16-19) and was sprint distance. The mens race was U23 (18-23) and standard distance. They flip-flop on Saturday.

That's a very good question - why are athletes expected to race double the distance in the space of 12 months.

how else do you expect to get to the full 1.5/40/10 distance? xc goes from 5k in high school to 10k the following year in college. this is a complete non issue. the bigger question is if the elites get dropped back down to a sprint for tokyo.

I'm happy she's "back" and been given some freedom to really come back after college running.

Jr and U23 world champion not bad resume.

Indeed. She worked very hard to recover this year after her accident. Today was her first Olympic distance race so great to see she adjusted to the distance. Next goal - 2020!

Looking like a crowded field for 2020! US women will leave off some talented athletes. WTS podium winner include Gwen, Katie Z, Knibb, Cook...Spivey? Kasper? Might have to Google that. Gonna be fierce. Throw Gorman in that mix.

Is there a compelling story to be told here? What kind of accident? This seems like we need a proper interview on the front page. The U23 world championship is a big win after all.

Short story is that she hit by a car in a cross walk and pushed through two lanes of traffic. The handle bar of her bike went through her leg, severed the IT band and was rubbing up against the biggest artery in her leg. That was in late October or early November 2016 right before she was supposed to run for U of M in either Big 10 conf or NCAA regionals.

I can ask her if she would do an interview which I am sure she would do. She's one of the nicest and most humble people you will meet. If a moderator is interested I will ask her if it's ok to pass her contact info on and share her story.
