race day nutrition and performance

Has anyone ever seen a study on race nutrition and performance that perhaps has plotted data linking performance to the amount of nutrition ingested during a race? I'd guess maybe not since there are far too many variables. It would be interesting to see though the impact on someone that ingests half (or some amount less) of the calories they should per hr. Would they see a decrease in performance during say the last half or a 70.3 or longer run leg?
