new trainer

I've had a Blackburn Defender trainer for about 15 years now but it finally died. So I was wondering about some of the options out there for a new trainer.

I was in same boat a couple of years ago. Obsessed over which one to get. I ultimately got the Cycleops Super Magneto. Love it. Has been bombproof and resistance feels pretty "natural" in that it gets harder the faster you go.

CycleOps has a lifetime warranty, hard to beat that. I use a Fluid II, nice and quiet.

I have had the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for about a year now and it's great. I purchased it after my Blackburn Fluid went out. It was definitely an upgrade over the Blackburn Fluid.

I own both a Kurt Kinetic road machine and a Cycleops Fluid 2 trainer. Both are great. I prefer the Cycleops as I find it is more convenient for quickly putting on/ taking off the trainer when I take the bike outside. Both supposedly have excellent service, although I never have had to use service from either of them.

+1.

KK and Cycelops have a good range of options ($200 and beyond) and both have lifetime warranties to my knowledge. I have a Cycleops Fluid II and enjoy it. No issues and it gets the job done. KK's road machine and the Rock and Roll are well reviewed and solid as well. The Rock and Roll is a bit different than regular trainers and a bit more expensive. Some people swear by them, others find it a bit gimmicky / unnecessary. Combine any of these with TrainerRoad and you are good to go.

The Wahoo Kickr is a great high-end option (cheaper than computrainer) and is a different style (cassette on trainer / no rear wheel needed). The Kickr also measures power and is a connected device. ~$1k

+1 Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Bought mine in 2009, still going strong with 1-2 workouts per week.

I wouldn't get anything other than a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine (short of a KICKR or CompuTrainer).

I second this. I went from a KK to the Kickr. The KK was a great trainer but the Kickr is awesome. I credit it with how strong I've gotten on the bike this year. While I love riding outside I no longer dread riding inside.

All of the above!

No need to buy new for the COF2 or KK trainers. Usually plenty on Craigslist to pick up for a good price, that is if your in an area with enough population!

That's even the same thing I did, KKRM to KICKR. Now I went out and bought a (used) KKRM because I thought the KICKR was broken and certainly wasn't going to train on anything else.

If you are going to use it more than 2x/week year, round, it really is worth it to get a Kickr + Trainerroad or other power software. It's awesome. One of the best investments you'll make in tri if you are committed to the training.

Finally dumped my POS Blackburn Tech Fluid for a Cycleops SuperMag Pro. Didn't trust that another fluid trainer wouldn't have some of the same issues the Blackburn did.

Tore my meniscus on Monday and have yet to be able to try the Cycleops yet. :(

I have a Cyclops Fluid 2, Kreitler rollers and a Lemond revolution (2 actually) and the Lemond is the only thing I use now. Have never used a Kickr, so I can't venture an opinion.
