i need a new TT bike
gotta ditch my old clunker

no long course tri stuff, just 40 and 20k tt's, maybe a half IM......I have an older HED disc that is 10 speed, and an SRM as well....was going to go with a Slice but then I'd be stripping it and retrofitting it with the SRM and a ten speed set if that's even possible....so I'm really thinking of just a frame

am i wrong headed thinking? i am a lot so you won't hurt my feelings......i just feel as though building a good frame is the way to go and so what's the good frame and where do i get it?

i'm 6'5", 210

tia,

Jimmy

I'm a shameless FELT fanboy but I've got solid reason, they make some of the fastest bike out there.

I'm about to post my 2015 specialized shiv pro race for sale. It's a whole bike + spare components, not just a frame, so might not be your thing, but I'm 6'5" 185 and it fits me nicely.

As for your thoughts about getting just a frame, that is my favorite way as well. Other than the Shiv, I have three other bikes that all started as frames and were customized piece by piece to be exactly what I wanted to ride. I like it because you end up with no surprises and complete knowledge of all the pieces.

What is the clunker and what don't you like about it?

Not wrong-headed thinking. But you may consider the bars. I believe the most significant upgrade I ever made was the bars. Both for positioning flexibility and pure aerodynamics of the bars themselves.

If I were looking for a new frame, I'd honestly start with the bar, and then ask, "What frames will work well with this bar?" Slowman has a similar approach in his recent articles on the TriRig alpha. Though I'm not a fan of the Alpha, personally.

You might want to check with HED and see if you can upgrade the hub to 11sp. might open up more options, if that's a good thing.

I converted my Renn disc to 11 speedin 20 minutes with a flat file. I don't think you will have a problem with the Head disc.

If you really just want a frame, look at the Felt IA10 frame for $2200. You can't go wrong.

6'5?

Consider the Scott Plasma. It's probably that or a Shiv if you want something that fits and go fast.

It's an Elite aluminum frame, exterior cabling and heavy. Now looking for lighter and more aerodynamics.

Thanks. If you like your fit you might check out the stack and reach tables to find some bikes with similar numbers.

I you want to rip TT's then get an Argon E118. Warning - I would only recommend to experienced riders.

Why only experienced riders? Too aggressive?

Bars are narrow and low in the dropped position
Bars ends are straight tubes, brake levers thin - can be sketchy to grip
Rides like a blade, narrow and fast
BB and drive section is very stout
Front end is atypical, mechanically more complex, steering is not full range (doesn't affect riding except maybe parking lot circles)
Cabling can affect the steering, so more sensitive to setup
Fork geometry is solid, bike handles very well in all phases

For me it's not a daily driver. Fast bike for the short stuff. I built another bike - more conventional for longer rides, day to day use etc. My E118 (edit) 2012 stays racked up as wall art.

Thanks really useful. I'll be putting my own bars onto an E116 so I'm happy they'll work for me. I race Sprint and Olympic with the odd 70.3 so hopefully I'll be OK! LBS is setting it all up so hopefully no mechanical issues.
