average speed calculation

I have a garmin edge 500, with a stages PM, and a cyclops speed/cadence sensor. If I use the strava app the distance of any given ride is the same as picked up by the phone vs the garmin but the garmin always says the average speed is faster, usually by half or so mph. The garmin is set to pause the timer at a stop and it appears the strava app does the same so which one is correct?

The one that shows the higher average speed.

They probably use a slightly different algo to calculate when you are stopped (i.e how much of the slow down and startup are counted in the average speed).

My wife and I both just use the Runkeeper app on our phones.

Saturday we rode together. Started at the same place, finished at the same place, had the same toilet stops etc.

Me 130.49km ave 29.17km/h
Her 129.27 ave 28.83km/h

Maybe it made an adjustment based on the fact she drafted off me the whole way.
