minneapolis cycling and renting a bike?
going to be in MN 2-3 weeks about a month before HIM. Debating on whether or not to bring my bike from home (only $75 each way fee) or is a place there to rent for a decent rate? also from center of town, easy to get out to ride? August. TIA!

Where are you staying downtown?

Depending on location, you should have quick access to a bunch of the trail system. I usually hop on the trails and ride West out from downtown, but there's some construction going on that I haven't taken the time to figure out how to get around. If you'll be able to drive w/ your bike, riding out west on Hwy 6/Watertown Rd is awesome. Repaved last summer, rolling "hills" (by Minneapolis standards), and 6 foot shoulders for about 20-25 miles.

If you're good with riding the trail system, you can slog out some decent rides from downtown. Hopefully someone else can chime in since I haven't figured out the best off-shoot from the trails yet that isn't west.

You could rent a bike from Gearwestbike. I think they're about $150 for a week. You can find info on their site. They don't rent tri bikes, but they do have decent road ones. Plus they would have any and all info regarding where to bike in the cities. They are about 20 miles west of downtown, so keep that in mind.

As for biking in Minneapolis, it is quite good. As the previous poster stated, west out of downtown has great trails and roads. Out of downtown, I would take the cedar lake trail. If you're having a hard time finding it, it literally goes under the Twins stadium. I would then cut over to the Dakota trail, its flat, in great shape, and gets you out of the cities. You do have to bike through the city of Wayzata to get there though. If you just want to enjoy a ride, check out the Grand Rounds, It's a great way to see almost everything Minneapolis has to offer.

If I were you I'd bring my bike. Go on google maps and see all the bicycling paths, from downtown you can go pretty much everywhere you would want to go in the area including to St. Paul, the lakes, Mississippi river, etc all on nice paved trails and super accessible. If you want more or a place to hammer down, as mentioned westward is a great way to head...enjoy.

The best riding is north east of the metro, around Hugo heading out towards Marine on St. Croix, with some realish hills.

oh my gawds and goddesses youse guys have AMAZEBALLS for bike paths. we got in around 230 am (nothing like seeing your flight delay another 15 minutes each and every time you pass a departures monitor whilst walking to your gate) and i really didn't want to ride. we'd just been in the CO mountains and were still sad from leaving that majesty but since i had not ridden my bike there despite amazing roads just outside whatever door stop we chose (dedicated my time there with my daughter) i felt like i *should* get out. i called up this thread and tried to find the cedar trail and the other and wrote down some scratchy directions and headed out. i didn't even put on my HRM as i figured i'd be stopping at a million stoplights and dodging cars. So i headed down to the midtown or midsomething beltway or greenpath and took that to the cedar something and up and around and down to keniworth or something and back to the midsomething and did another loop before heading home. THESE ARE DEDICATED trails! No cars! no lights! and in the first 10 km i saw more cyclists that i have in 4 years where i live. people were SO nice when i asked for directions but ohmaigawds what trails youse guys have! I am SO glad i went out. TOday my BIL wants to take us somewhere and then i'll tack on some more.

Minneapolis youse guys are amazeballs! after reading all the threads about the awful drivers and hostility in the United States I was actually very worried but Minneapolis has incredible dedicated trails. i'm still in shock.

now i just need to find a pool and a gravel path to run...

Yep Minneapolis trails for riding and walking/running are awesome. Folks even follow the rules of which direction and part of the trail to go on...often bikes and pedestrians have separate trails for safety.

Wish more the US had such a great trail system.
