aw honey, really? every single resort on the island? :) bring some cash. airport taxistas have you by your nutella. there MIGHT be a big sign with prices inside but otherwise, get in cab, get to resort, hand over cash. pretty much that is the way it works.

last tip - there is a GI bug going around. my kids brought it home from school so it is likely everywhere. good thing is you will want to die only for a few hours and then you're golden. hit me yesterday after my swim and this am i'm back to coffee...

omaigawds. apparently the way to get a super low bib number is either to do the event 4 years in a row, register 2 weeks before the event, or be the oldest in your category (i age up next year) but wow. i'm 315

Is it a wetsuit swim a virtual impossibility? Trying to decide whether to pack the wetsuit.

Forecast calls for rain. I guess that means we can pee all over ourselves with impunity.

T minus 10 days! Taper is starting to drive me nuts. I am off to Vegas for a business trip this weekend (worst timing possible) and just hope to not get sick.

It's early, but the forecast looks like we have a chance to catch decent weather next weekend:

I looked at weather report before we arrived on Nov 20th. The report did not look promising, but it has been sunny and hot everyday. Those that did the Grand Fondo today said it was hot and windy on the course.

Hey everyone ... arrived in Coz yesterday. Where is the best/safest place to get in a swim? Can you actually get onto the course proper for a swim?

you can, but you'll have to pay entrance fee to Chank. I go to the Villabuena (think that's it) across from PapaHog (on the malecon on your way south) and they have lockers and fresh water teh rinse off with there. They don't charge but please patronize their business afterwards. i swim up towards the cruise ships and down to the ray jail.

Thanks Kathy, the swim start is now from one of the hotels? Is that right? Can you swim from there? Even if not a guest? I'm staying at the Park Royal.

not sure where the park royal is, sorry. the swim start is from (IIRC) El Presidente which is right down by Chank. you *might* be able to get past the lobby if you're a white guy and look like you know what you're doing but the hotel is a good 9-12 km from town. i just got out of the water and we have serious chop and waves and wind over here so you guys must have flat seas. i would seriously suggest getting your sea swims in today and tomorrow and wednesday as our guys say a norte is due in this week and then you'll have our seas (choppy and ugly)

the weather channel forecast has been changing on a daily basis. it looks good right now but I am putting more trust in Kathy's local knowledge. unfortunately don't arrive on the island until Friday morning so will have to deal with whatever conditions are then.

Definitely a little disappointed in this, but hopefully it will help with the drafting situation. Cant wait to get down there before the snow hits here in the New England.

If anyone forgot anything from the States, let me know and I can pick it up...heading to the LBS today and flying out tomorrow.

welll, we aren't so concerned with timing here so it is possible the norte could have blown through by Sunday. just saying that if you're on island and looking to swim, i'd do it now rather than later as i expect norte to come in tomorrowish (and then we'll have flat seas and you guys will have our crummy chop).

Hi Kathy-

Long story but I'm looking to have my bottom bracket swapped out when I get down to CZ on Friday afternoon (bike is already en route). Any idea if the event bike support has/will have a bottom bracket extractor and press? Or, know of any local shops that would be able to do this for me? Thanks!!

over on Cozumel, Cabrillas is your best bet. i'm thinking your only bet. i'd get in contact with them immediately and make sure. to me that sounds like a big deal but maybe it isn't. worst case scenario you come back over here and Teknobike (PdC) and GoCycle (Cancun) i can almost guarantee could do that. ferries run every hour and depending on timing we might be able to pick you up from the ferry if you have to come over here.

otherwise i would check where our local bike transport (mexican) hangs out - by Chedraui - and see if one of those guys can help. there will be mechanics all over the place but not sure how big of a deal that is.

There are usually mechanics set up around the convention center/packet pick-up that, depending on your needs and depending on if you're supplying the bottom bracket, might be able to install a BB for you. If you're intending to buy the part there, contact Cabrilla ASAP because parts are scarce in Coz, but your best bet is to bring the new part with you.

looks like Kathy nailed it weather wise. The Friday swim practice is canceled according to their Facebook post a couple hours ago...

Ford Ironman Cozumel[/url]
A cold front with strong winds has entered today in Cozumel. This will prevail for the next two days and will considerably slow down by late friday. The swim practice scheduled for Friday will be cancelled, but we expect that on Saturday the swim practice can go as planned and we anticipate that everything will be all right on race day. We will keep you informed as the cold front progresses.

Funslly made it to the island. packet pickup went smooth today and there was hardly s line by the time I went through around 1:30pm. grabbed some groceries and a scooter for the week, and got settled in to our condo down from the T1 then went for a short run.

Now I just need to get the bike put together and taken out for a test ride tomorrow before the drop off, get in a quick swim in the morning and then R E L A X until go time.

oh and the weather forecast looks like it is going to be decent all weekend. Best wishes and good luck Sunday to all the fellow Slowtwitchers in Cozumel!

I did this race last year. It was my first IM and I loved it!!! I would like to do it again in 2015, but I heard a rumor that it might be canacelled. Is there any indication of this at there right now? Any word from the race organizers??

this rumor seems to go around every year. i have no idea why. IIRC within the last year or 2 there was a 5-year contract renewed. I think 2008 was the first year, and that was a 4y contract IIRC so in 2012 they signed a 5-y but even if it was just a 4y next renewal could not be sooner than 2016. my recollection is that 2017 would be next renewal.

it is a HUGE boon to the local economy. i cannot imagine why they would not renew the contract.

now that the race is over and I have had a day to reflect on it and recover I wanted to throw out a big thank you to Kathy and everyone else for the helpful information on Cozumel. this race met and exceeded my expectations in every way.

I will do a full RR when I get home and have a real keyboard to use. the short version goes something like this - amazing swim venue, great job by marshals enforcing no drafting - very difficult bike with the wind that was howling 30-40mph on the east side - and a run that had the greatest support from the community - it was like a party the entire 4.3 miles of each leg.

the third lap of the bike sucked the life out of me and carried over to the first lap of the run so I didn't hit my goal time, but I did manage to suck it up and finish. based on the carnage that I saw on the bike and run course I am happy with it overall.
