I would consider myself on the light side at roughly 15-17 hours per week.

Typical week is about 3 hours in the pool, 3-4 hours running, 8-10 hours on the bike.

forgot to ask also, how many races / year a triathlete does.

I do around 80 races / year round.

4 hrs of running, 3 hrs of swimming, and 7-9 hrs on the bike for about 14-16 total. And I am FOP for my age group.

You are either or, can't be both. What's your name?

I'm at about 12 in my first week of base, that includes strength training. I'll probably get up to 20-23 in peak months. (4 swims, 3-4 rides, 4-6 runs)

I'm an amatuer roadie as well. For two years I'm at 3-4 hours tues, wens, thur. With one hour of running per day.

I generally seperate mt cycling in two parts. 2 hours in the morning two hours at night. With a run for lunch. BUT on Tuesdays and Thur I do an extremely fast ride at nights.

But on Saturdays and Sunday's straight 5 hours on saturday and 3 on Sunday. Rest days for me are on Friday and Monday. (at which points I'm generally doing laps at the Rec center)

So 17-20 hours on the bike on avg per week.

Socks

OH!
On rare occasion if I have a slow week I'll try to do 500-700 miles in a week which takes up a lot more time.

12-15 hours: 4-ish swimming, 6-ish running, 5-ish riding.

As for race sin a year: 6-8 triathlons, 4-5 running races, maybe a solo bike and a solo swim race or two.

That's good stuff. I'm impressed with how few hours you ride to maintain performance at that 'pay the bills' level, which is going to be very high.

While I definitely do not train anywhere as hard/intensely as you do, I do log more hours than that, and I'm a middling FOP AGer who can't even get onto the podium despite decades of running and ample time to get decent on bike/swim.

I put up 14-15 hours a week in the off-season, and when half-ironman (my "A" race) season comes in it goes up to 18-20 hours per week while holding down a full time job and family. It's amazing how many hours of training you can cram in between 4AM-6AM as well as the half hour lunch hour - my wife barely notices how much I train! I will say that because I do a lot of training in those earlier morning hours, I can't crank up the intensity as much. I still go plenty hard for me, but even with warmup it's still not the same doing interval work at 6AM having just woken up than doing it when you're fully awake.

Crazily, even at 20 hours per week, which feels like a lot of training to me, it really doesn't feel anywhere near maxxing my results in triathlon. Even at 20hrs per week that's only about 7-8 hrs each of bike/run and 5-6 of swim, which is nowhere near what a standalone athlete would do for training hours. I also felt much more tired and beatdown in my prior incarnation as a pure marathon runner running 70+mpw which took 8-9 hours per week, as opposed to now where I log 2x the hours but don't feel as beat up.

I know this is quite low for the races I am doing, but most of my trainning being based with intensity trainning such as MAP work on the computrainer, track workouts, their is always a line where your body starts to be conterproductive.

The other reason is the racing. With 80 races a year, you need to recover as well in between. Anyhow, I have always been amazed by the volume of trainning triathletes are doing.

18-20hours a week + a full time job is amazing!

(US) pros on a pro team don't even manage to pay their bills via the bike.

That's awesome man. I'm basing "light side" on other conversations I've had with people at events. I hear a lot of 25+

To be honest I never really trained before this year. Up until I got my Cat 3 upgrade I just showed up at races and won, since march I slowly build probably averaged around 10-12 with my largest week being 18 hours, and a lot at 8 hours. I don't have a real job just a college student and I'm pretty sure my coach is going to have me doing a whole lot more this season now that I've ramped up a bit and will actually have an off-season.

I know many US cyclists are struggling and I have never said I was'nt. I have been lucky to have the support of my national federation the last 3 years. The prize money only pays for my food, insurance, etc.

So far this year I've averaged 140 minutes a day or 14:20 a week. Some weeks are higher, some are lower. That is about as much as I can handle but then again I'm 45.

I am 62 AG, so pretty much out of real competition.
But per week I log: 4 hr OWS, 4hr ride and 4hr run by doing an OLY bout every other day as my training. I race bout once a month here in Miami.
I thought I was training a lot til I read this thread. Now I see why I don't improve as much as I'd like.
Wish I could pay my bills by riding my bike like cyclist87 as the bike is my favorite event since 1970.
(80 races a yr (6+ races a month) seems like a lot of races. Just sayin)

8.06 YTD: 1.07 swim, 5.13 bike, 1.86 run.

4 sprint Tri's, 1 Oly Tri, 3 sprint Du and AZ S/C (not sure which distance that would be considered - they call it short course, but its not very short.), a few 3 - 6.2 mile running races.

Won my age group in all the Du's - not so good in the rest

I did my first Ironman this year, and was averaging 20 hours/week, but bumped it up to 26-27 hours/week for my peak weeks. Right now I'm doing about 8 hours/week, and feeling really lazy about it. I do best with 12 hours/week.

Since coming back from ITB syndrome in May I've been able to build to 16-18 hour weeks without and issue. FOP at local races, I'm doing Rev 3 Venice this weekend so we will see how if the hours have paid off. Though it seems there will be just short of 400 people racing and a lot of the local races get upwards of 1000.
