What do you consider "budget" pricing? You can get 2 GP4000S II tires for $88 shipped at Nashbar right now. Under $50/tire is budget pricing to me.

Don't budget on tires.

They are the cheapest way to improve bike performance.

From Germany, I just ordered some Schwalbe One Evolutions from these guys to try them out.

Here are some Conti GP4000SII
http://www.bike24.com/...00+S+II+Folding+Tire

About $91 shipped but just a little over your budget

I would go the nashbar route though but I get $88.48 shipped

Not that many years ago, the Michelin Pro Race 3 was considered one of the best racing clincher. I think it might have even won a stage of the tour. You can find them in your price range at Performance and Nashbar.

A set of tires is probably going to last you at least 3-4K miles. I'm not sure how many weeks that means for you, but it's going to be a lot. This is not the place to skimp to save a few dollars given all the mosquito farts people spend $$$ chasing. Rather than looking at the purchase cost, you should consider which of the fast tires will last longest. IME, the 4000s are tough to beat in that sense...I'm around 4000 miles on my current set and they still look pretty fresh, and I do a decent amount of gravel road riding on them. Go for the 25s over the 23s and over the course of the tire's lifespan you'll likely get enough fewer flats that you'll save the $15 on tubes.

i looked at the tires on the other 50 bikes there.

some were specialized tires
some riders ran schwabble

I sometimes wonder if the folks at Conti ever truly understand how the 4000S became so popular....

I'd skip all of them for Michelin pro 3s that someone already mentioned. I've seen them pretty consistently near $25 per tire.

Weight isn't even a factor to worry about.
