You thought Active.com fees were bad!

<rant mode on>
Over the weekend I got an email about a deal for early registration for the Carlsbad 5000, a pretty big local 5km. Entry over the weekend was only $25. I have no idea if I will be able to run it but thought it was a good deal to gamble on so got out the credit card. What a surprise to find out the transaction processing fee tacked on was another 7.99, a 32% add on fee.The race (Carlsbad 5000) is owned by Competitor Group so I assume this fee is similar on all Rock n Roll events as well? Anyone know if it is just a set fee per entry regardless of actual entry fee or is it % based.

that makes it even worse, their in house registration engine is raping people for fees to enter their own races.

I'd still rather pay an $8 fee to race a 5K than a $50+ fee to race an Ironman.

$8 is a joke, it's $2 less than the full fee for local club Triathlons which are sprint distance with no added rego fees.

What makes it ridiculous is that the amount of money you spend should not change the cost of processing the transaction, but if you purchase a global pass, it is $24.99 for the processing fee, you know, because they are not making enough off the global pass in the first place.

As bad as that sounds, $25+8 for a popular 5k = $33, which is a pretty fair price for a popular well known 5k.

Our LOCAL 5k which isn't famous, isn't well known, and is only popular amongst immediately locals, sells for $50 for a 5k!!!

we have one in the area that puts on about 15 events each year and they process all of their registrations through their own site. They hit you for $9 for each race you enter in their series even though they're the host and even if you register for several races at the same time.

Great things never come from comfort zones.

I'd just like to see some movement towards transparency. If it's going to cost you $33 to race, then advertise $33, not $25. I get it - the psychology of marketing works. But it's a little insulting at times.

And the $7.99 of the OP is another little age-old marketing ploy that's a little insulting. In my perfect world race producers treat athletes with respect - sort of a brotherhood of endurance. E.g. when I sell things in the classifieds I don't sell tires for $29.99.

I just signed up for a sprint duathlon that is part of a sprint tri (pool swim) and the du is usually an afterthought. Ponied up $85 for the du only to find out after I receive my emailed receipt that there was a $12 processing fee! So $97 freaking dollars for a rinkydink duathlon.

I just had a coworker sign him and his wife up for 3 Disney virtual 5ks for a total of $300. Individual 5ks were $40 each (plus active fees). For virtual 5ks...

April Fool's was a couple weeks ago. That's a good one -- that takes ba!!s to put that fee on there.

If Eddie Vedder was a Runner, instead of a Surfer, Active would be gone by now

better yet in the email they advertised $20, you go to the site and click register all of a sudden $25. then add the lame processing fee. Just advertise all damn costs up front!
