The company line was that it stood for "Need For Speed". There's one on ebay right now...

It was called aero-stream.

BTW I still have my aero lites have used them since back in the day until 2 months ago when I switched to Zeros

101. Being the first one in upstate NY with aero bars and being told by pro bike racers that it is a piece of crap and a fad.

102. Doing Lake Placid and getting hypothermia because there was no such thing as wetsuits for triathlons.

103. Racing on a tri bike with 2 24" wheels. I am thinking of pulling it out of moth balls and racing on it. I have a feeling it wont be much, if any slower than my P2C

What a great freakin' thread.

Did my first tri in '87 and remember a lot of this. 1990 was the embodiment of the cliches--at Wildflower, rode my 24 pound PINK and Grey Nishiki International to my best ever bike split complete with Uni-disc, Scott DH bars, and Tri Fit top. Did the run in Nike air sock trainers which I continued to use on race days for a few more years. Even had a convo with Lisa Lahti while getting a post-race massage.
Back then the massage lines weren't so ridiculous and they were free.

Later "upgraded" to grip shift and the j-disc wheel. Since then my bike is nearly 10lbs lighter but that split is still 30 sec faster.

Fond memories as well of those amazing women, esp Jan Ripple, Lisa Lahti, Colleen Cannon, Kristen Hansen. Awe for Dave Scott, Scott Tinley, Jimmy Riccetello, that punk kid Lance, and stud Mike Pigg. Goddamn Pigg was amazing; he avgd 3mph faster on the bike than any one else at the San Jose budlight.

And how f'ing cool was it that Bud Light and Coors Light sponsored for so many years? Truly the golden age.
The thing I miss most though: World's Toughest Triathlon in Lake Tahoe '91, complete with Cowman for color.

Amazing that so much has passed!

Dude I'm dying. I still have 2 pairs of Sub 4 running shorts for notalgia. Not 6 months ago I put a pair on and it wouldn't even cover my nuts. I walked in the kitchen and scared the shit out of my girlfriend with 'the two headed wart' sticking out both sides. I might have weighed 150 soaking wet back then so they were nice and tight!

And if I still had my seat shifter I would run it. Best most underutilized invention simply because it was unaero and heavy.

- - Used to love that stuff. Tasted some few years ago because a century that I did was serving it. I was surprised that it's still out there. Yech, it didn't taste the same...

I just bought a pair of Adidas SL72s. I hope they aren't as disappointing!
You bought Adidas SL72's, the best (training) shoe ever? Where did you get them?

Racing in a leather helmet and Binda's with little buttons on the end so you could tighten them up before the sprint.

Looking wonderfully aero with two still unbroken collarbones and a face without a care or worry 25 years ago...

Had my jetstream hydration system, which from the rear resmbled bull's balls, on my Purple C'Dale with purple anodized Sun rims and a Sampson Stratics crank with purple anodized chainring bolts. Gripshift and Sugino parts.

Remember Chris Hinshaw and his "neverlook" system; a mirror that you could stay aero with and never look up.

Great to hear the names mentioned....Met George Hoover...didn't he run a little bar in Solana Beach for a while? He was interesting. Yves Cordier, Joanne Earnst(sp?), Linda Bucannon, and small plastic straws on a chain to wear in a marathon to make drinking the cups of ERG easier.

Kind of a bar, but more a resturante..It was called the Kona Bar and Grill. Really great food and the look of many of the seafood Kona hangouts. Had many a party at that place. Not sure what happened, could have been the collapse of JDavid or just the wrong business at the wrong time...
