Yoga resources

Anyone have any good yoga resources for someone who knows nothing about yoga? Preferably without all the mystical mumbo jumbo or crap about connecting to your inner spirit. Just looking for a decent routine.

I tried googling some, and the hippie granola eaters who do them drive me batshit crazy.

I'd highly recommend going to try out a studio. A lot of studios have a cheap rate for people to try out a bunch of classes for a few weeks for one price. A restorative class is nice to do the day after a hard brick. For other days try a Vinyasa aka flow class. My favorites are Ashtanga classes. Ashtanga is a specific series of poses done in order as opposed to most Vinyasa classes are just whatever the teacher feels like that day. They do typically start the class with a 30 second chant in sanskrit but that's it for the mumbo jumbo then it's 90 minutes of challenging poses that require flexibility and strength (if you're doing them right).

There will be a lot of the other kind of MAMIL (middle aged mom's in Lululemon) but some of them are pretty impressive in what they can do.

I like yogadownload.com they have a bunch of free videos (so you can pick the ones without the mystical mumbo jumbo) and you can usually download a pose guide to go with it.

ommm

I think the US Masters swim publication, Streamlines, or Swimmer, or whatever it is, just had a yoga for swimmers thing. I could be remembering incorrectly but you could try their website.

Look up "sun salutations" and do those.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

Agree, go to a couple of different studios if they have a trial package and try a few different types of yoga to see what works best. I practice bikram since I like the fact that it is a set series of postures so you can measure your own progression in addition to improving core strength/ flexibility and being better acclimated to heat/humidity.

I did have one bad experience doing this though where I tried one local studio where the instructor decided to focus on relaxation/meditation rather than different postures. She brought out a bunch of blankets and proceeded to explain how to wrap ourselves a certain way so that you were like a caterpillar in a cocoon, and then she read poetry for like 20 minutes. I never went back after that.

One of the guys I cycle with has been leading yoga classes for about 5 years. He recommended this site. There is a monthly fee but much less than taking classes.

Wife taught and practices, so I've had more than my fair share of down-dogs. A good studio IMHO is a waste for you, it's expensive and really, unless the teacher has a thing for you, you're not really going to get the individualized attention and adjustment to correct your positions that you need. A good gaiam dvd works fine like Rodney Ye but it's much harder to do the whole workout outside a class setting...face it, we are competitive so if you take the class, you will suffer it out and suffer you will! But you will also have 15 women in Lululemon to watch, so that may make the $15 worth it right there.

The yoga workout on P90X workout program is actually not bad and is comprehensive, plus it doesn't get caught up in all that "granola" rigamorole. But here's the BEST option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92i5m3tV5XY
