Don't have any of my own examples but I did just see this http://www.outsideonline.com/...ampaign=facebookpost
What's the shittiest tri and/or training advice you've seen or been given?

FWIW not sure if Ben Greenfield counts.

All you need to do is run easy, no speed work is necessary.

You consider this the worst advice? A large volume of "slow" running can get someone very fast.

Worst advice I ever got was that I needed to extend my stride out and really reach for every step when I run. Got this from a guy constantly fighting knee and hip injuries.

That reminds me of a friend I went running with once who thought he should take long strides with a heel pushoff and was in a similar situation.

Article is hilarious, "I sleep 8-10hrs a night..." immediately followed by "recovery is overrated..."

Lolz.

Worst bit of advice I hear on a regular basis "Pro [insert name here] trains like that, you should too..."

highlight of this article

You can do pull-ups on a tree branch.

Really? Any branch that can support my weight if going to be a pretty large diameter and I can't speak to this from experience but I'm pretty sure the bark would cut my hands up pretty good.

Personally the worst advice I've gotten in my short career is all you need is a pair of shoes, swim trunks, and any old bike will do for your first triathlon.

The worst advice I ever received was to sign up for a "yoga for triathletes" course. The resultant injury from inept instruction meant months off work, big medical bills, total deconditioning, a brutal surgery and an uncertain and protracted recovery. I'll be "lucky" if I can race again next year. I wish I had never signed up for that course.

Screw yoga.

Running up/down curbs to improve your running speed.

re: pullups from tree branch...did it all the time, no problems with bark. I would worry more about critter scurrying about that you cannot see from the ground perspective.

We have beginner triathletes turning up to 1hr track sessions and never doing anything but zone 2, because they read something Phil Maffetone wrote. I cannot get people to understand that Mark Allen already had professional bloody threshold power and pace.

And everything that I ever read in 220 Triathlon Magazine (for folks in the UK).

I agree that people have not read up on Phil Maffetone. His method is sound but people take it out of context. As I remember, Mark Allen was running 5:xx min/miles and slowed down to 6:xx min/miles for his easy stuff.

I was a huge Maff follower in the late 80's and was always happy with the steady improvements. Could have been better? Sure probably, but it definitely kept me from overdoing it injury wise where I had been banged up too much. REgarding his easy stuff it was actually an 8:15 pace he had to slow to keep his HR at Maff's limit for him. At the end of a few months of his HR limit he had brought that down to his old race pace at the same HR cap. There was little to info on Maff at the time b/c we had no innerwebs, but luckily my cross country coach had heard of him and that is what brought me to tri partly. I think so many people read a quick blurb on Maff and say 'no speed work.' He never once said that and actually says once the plateau is reached it's time for more speed work.
