Wildflower Registration Open Date?
Hey Folks-
A few coworkers convinced me to sign up for Wildflower long course as my first tri. When does registration usually open online? Hopefully there's some water left in CA next spring for a swim...

If I recall it opens in December, the 1st sounds familiar. I'm going to wait to sign up again to wait to see if we get any rain in December and January.

Good call - What do you think are the chances of water existing?

I think there will be more water than last year, but not back to where it usually is- I remember reading an article in the Monterey paper about the multiple factors working against lake San Antonio getting filled back to normal soon

WFLC as your first tri??? OUCH!!

Personally, I'd wait and see if they have any water before you sign up. I did it this year and it was a decidedly sub-optimal experience :-(

I'll agree w/the first tri comment above - in '89 it was my first "half" but gee wiz I'd been racing for 4 years (even went to Hilton Head) before that. Amazes me, but, somehow people do things like WFLC and IM's as their first tri - and, live to do another.

Re: Last year. My performance wasn't great, but I thought it was still a good race. Given the conditions, etc. If the water level is the same or better as last year, it should be the usual fun/hard event.

Most important - cross your fingers for serious rain statewide (make that the West in general). Even if you're from the east - lot's of your food grows here, and, if farmers hurt here, so will the wallet in your back pocket. :-|

I saw this on a white board in a window box at my daughters middle school...

I am thinking it opens Nov 1, and sent a note to TriCal to see what they say regarding the date. The water is listed, at the County website as being about the same as last years race day (within 5ft ) so hopefully we will get some rain this winter, and for more reasons than racing :-)

I was nursing a sore hip last year, so looking forward to going back this year.

Ignorance is bliss, right?

Thanks for the info. Should be fun!

But seriously...WFLC is one heck of a choice for a first triathlon. It's known as one of the toughest courses out there. Both the bike and the run are damn hard!

By all means do it if you wish, but try and do a couple of warm-up races beforehand.

Assuming you live here in NorCal, I would recommend the Stanford Treeathlon (sprint) on March 7, then SVIT (olympic) on April 19.

Good luck!

Thanks -- I'm down in Ventura. I'd love to do a few tuneups first!

Any updates on when registration will open? I didn't seen any new information on their website. Also, how quickly does this race sell out?

I don't think it has sold out the past 2-3 years.

Thanks. People I've run into kept saying how popular the race was, so I got the impression that it would sell out quickly.

Used to sell out (at least the long course), but about two years ago, WTC turned St. George into a 70.3 and it's the same weekend, so that takes away much of the potential pool of racers in the southwest. That's when WF stopped selling out.

Heard something interesting about Lake San Antonio. Another race company was interested in purchasing Wildflower. Given the current state of the lake they hired a specialist to evaluate it. Based on the fact that the lake is 100% rain filled the specialist doubted that it would be back to it's normal level for several years. The interested company decided to pass.
If I were TriCal I would be trying to see how I could offer athletes insurance against the swim being cancelled so they wouldn't be afraid to sign up.
If I were planning on registering for Wildflower I would wait until I knew what TriCal's plan was if there isn't any water in the lake.

Fingers crossed that it works out for everyone.

Good info, looks like there's no big hurry to sign up then. I was originally looking at St. George, but not sure whether I could get enough time off from work (want to spend a few days in Vegas). Wildflower is about a 4 hour drive, so a weekender is do-able.

WF has not sold out for many more years than that. Now the LC did when they were a qualifier a few years ago, but the Olympic no. Now, they have closed registration in the past, but the race was no where close to the past sell out numbers.

And yep, without rain, lots of races are impacted.
