Why do I do this? Quote | Reply

Got into it 5 years ago. Started training seriously with a USAT coach 2 years ago. Now after these 5 years, my enjoyment seems to decline year to year despite accomplishing goals every year. I feel like I am doing it for the wrong reason, and now with race season in progress, and the discomfort of racing, I am deciding to "settle" when I get uncomfortable in a race. Then I finish, and don't feel happy with my race, even tho it may be an age group first or top 5 overall. Any suggestions, race tomorrow morning, and need a smack in the face, otherwise, it's gonna be a long day.

You forgot to have fun....that is after all the only reason most of us play...FUN.

So....tomorrow? Paint your face pink, one arm purple one arm red. Why? Why the hell not?

Are you a Pro or is this a hobby?

i don't know where you're from, but tomorrow i will be in Perryville, MD doing an olympic distance. the forecast calls for 103 degrees. i'm not sure there is a "right" reason to be out there. certainly not for an under-trained, over-weight, dufus like me.

fun has to be the difference. my year has been a disaster tri wise. first family, then health, but everything has gone south so far. however, i am really REALLY looking forward to romping around tomorrow. having a good time makes it worthwhile.

so go out there and do something different. do the most ridiculous bike you can. run in tennis shoes. something. hell, maybe you shouldn't even race. go volunteer and watch the grins on the faces of us idiots. it might give you some life back.

but, if it doesn't, and you still want to leave the game AND you have a 51cm P5 you want to unload, send me a PM.

good luck

Dave

The minute you hired a coach the fun factor diminished. You turned a hobby into a vocation. Sounds like you've begun the necessary introspection.

Good luck tomorrow and going forward. Remember, it's not like you're curing cancer.

I'm jealous. Wish I was doing this race.

The bike course is crazy twisty. When I did the race, there was a pile up on one very tricky turn. Be careful on that turn. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

You could seek the support of counsellor specialized in motivational interviewing to discern, clarify and assess your motives - central questions would be:

  • what's good about your current training / racing
  • what's not so good
  • what do you hope triathlon training / racing will give you
  • what would be the challenges to making a change toward those hopes

A good MI counsellor will facilitate the process to a greater depth then answering the questions on your own - s/he can help you 'unpack' the above.

Good luck!

Go with your plan to go crazy and go fast. Try it with this little twist... no electronics.

  • No speedometer
  • No Heart Rate monitor
  • no power display
  • no GPS
  • no watching your pace

Just go out there and have fun. Sing some good song(s) in your head, and pretend like you're 10 again on the run.

No, seriously, pretty mediocre backdoor brag, good try though.

No, really seriously - you need to mix it up a little. As far as tomorrow, since you are already signed up and presumably prepared, just tell yourself you are going to embrace the suffering one last time and worry about the overall picture later, and give it a legitimate hard effort. Reward yourself post race with some delicious snacks and a nap, because, really, what else is there... Then, going forward, think of some different things to do. Find some new people to train with (slower, or faster) and just enjoy the activities for their own sake. If you don't already run trails, start. Mountain bike for fun. Do what seems enjoyable, even if it's just walking the dog or sitting on your ass reading a book. 5 years is just about the time you start to realize triathlon is fun, and cool, but nobody really cares, so like you said, you need some reason other than the initial adrenaline-like rush of the newness and the apparent coolness. You need to like swimming, biking and running for their own sake, and that's a hard switch to flip just because you intellectually realize it's necessary. It can take some time. Whatever you do, don't be hard on yourself, that's no fun.

unless you're pulling a check, you better enjoy doing this. i enjoy all the friends that i've met thru the sport. it's very social for me now and going to a race with a tri-club is far more fun than when i was new and going to events by myself. find something you like and if it's not tri, that's ok.

We call that "naked" in my house. We also include no headphones. I do a naked workout once a week and I swear it is the best workout of the week for me. They are also the most fun.
