Who will win the KONA AG best bike split?
I know the pro's are in one category, however who do we think are the strongest age group cyclists out there at Kona this year?

Cam Wurf is an obvious favorite, are there any other dark horses out there who may be able to rip a super bike leg before hobbling home?

the strongest cyclist might be a guy that run under 3h off the bike and dont show his card on the ride ;)

Sam Gyde is on a Diamond bike, new aero suit and was very strong at IMMT.

You beat me to it! Unfortunately it is probably well nigh impossible to cut that course. I don't think she is allowed to race right now anyways.
Maybe it will be the brave lion hunting dentist from Minnesota....

Who knows but it is amazing how fast the front 3 AG guys are each year vs the pros.

Yeah they have just as much talent, train 20+ hours/week, but want to have a job that actually pays.

It will be either Cameron Wurf or Nick Bensley. Both absolute weapons on the bike, Wurf most here know about Bensley not so much. Plus both Aussies!

Agreed.

What I don't understand about it though, is why these guys don't just get a pro card.
Even if they didn't change anything about their routines, habits or approaches to the sport, they would perhaps win enough prize money to make it a cost neutral hobby.

Don't worry, not guessing needed, I'm all over it.

BBS says I can theoretically set a bike course record... if I want to walk most of the run... and there's no wind gusts... and it's not too hot. OK, I suspect it's a bit optimistic.

Gyde is a good guess. Depending on winds, he'll could be as fast as 4:25 I'd guess. Just a couple minutes slower than Kienle & Sanders.

Most of these guys stay amateurs because they aren't fast swimmers and aren't quite fast enough to win most 70.3 or IM's and marginal on qualifying for Kona as a pro. In the end, it's more fun to race the best amateurs than be a middle of pack pro. Finally, a lot of these guys are approaching or right around 40, so it's a little late to start a pro career. They are as fast as they are going to get.

That's my take at least.

I've always wondered this. Get a pro and you can sign up to races last minute. Wouldn't that alone be worth it?

True, but if you want to race a large field at your ability in Kona every year, you have to stay amateur. Most of these guys couldn't qualify for Kona as pros under the current point system or have the time of funds to travel enogh.

That makes sense. I also wonder if they're well known enough that they can chat to race organisers and get into the race even when sold out

x3 on Wurf. Averaged 320w at IMC. Nothing to play for as he's going back to pro cycling.
