When will the new Cali IM be announced? Quote | Reply

Has there been any update about either SLO, Sta Cruz or Tahoe?

Makes me worry about the delay if this drags out long enough that CDA, USA or Canada happen and then I have to choose one of them for fear of being locked out of a mid 2013 race if I choose to wait to see if
Cali is going to again have a FuLL IM.

WTC is looking at late September dates for the Cali race. SLO is out and SC and LT are still in, although I heard unconfirmed murmurs today that WTC has made a choice... the anticipation is killing me.

So still a chance for a Lake Tahoe race? This would be awesome, but sounds like it would suffer the same fate as St. George....too hard! I'd love to see a 70.3 in Tahoe though. I did the old long course tri (World's Toughest Tri) in South Lake Tahoe in 93....2 miles swim in the late, 100 mile ride with 2 climbs of Luther Pass and up over Monitor Pass and a 20 mile technical trail run around Fall Leaf Trail.....it took me just as long as an Ironman!

Bring it! I'm waiting like everyone else. I'm sure IM wouldn't do as hard of a course as the old "World's Toughest" course (sigh...), but the elevation alone will weed out the less-hearty.

Hopefully not too late in September, would be better if early Sept.
In So. Cal. We have a number of long established Tris like Malibu
and LA Tri later in the month so that would be bad for us

I have NO desire to do another IM, but this race would only be about an hour from my house. Now, that would be tough to turn down. My goal would be a nice 16:59 hour event. :o)

I'm not really interested in doing an Ironman with a crazy difficult course as I find the distance is long enough as it is with moderately difficult courses (like IMLP). However, I'd be very interested in a race in Tahoe. If it is a 70.3 in Tahoe with a the world's craziest most difficult course, where the pros barely break 5 hours, then count me in! Time of year is perfect. Swim better be in Lake Tahoe (even though it is crazy cold and I hate cold). Something special about swimming in that lake!

very cool swimming in lake tahoe! but that time of year, the lake is very comfortable temperature wise without a wetsuit, so with a wetsuit on it should be perfect!

If the bike if around the lake, not very safe since basically no shoulders and TONS of cars.

Water with a wetsuit on would be perfect.

Sounds like they are talking an IM, but I agree, with the course that tough at altitude, a 70.3 would be much more attractive.

Dev, if you think Tahoe is cold and tough, have you ever done the Donner Oly Tri in July? Killer tough race.

Tahoe would be a neat place for a race. The selfish part of me is bummed about the date. I know it would be too cold just about any other time but a September IM is just not in the cards. That would mean all my training would be done in the heat of a Houston summer. I'd rather be waterboarded. Heck, I'm not even doing any short races this summer because I have zero motivation to train hard during the summer months.

We get to trade places....Aug/Sep IM sucks for guys in the south....same like spring IMs for those of us from the cold.

Seriously, I hope this race is a 70.3 with a really really hard course. The altitude alone makes it crazy difficult. I'd still be intrigued to do the IM, but I would hope for a somewhat "flattened" bike course if it is the full 140.6.

Sep is also perfect timing as I pretty well seem to have to spend 1/3 to half my time in the fall in the Bay area on business around that time of year.

if the bike course was mainly around the lake it wouldn't be *that* tough would it?

1 lap of the lake + an extra loop of truckee, north star then back to the lake would be about 112 miles with 1500m elevation gain?

When I have driven around the lake there are some real steep sections!! So, just depends on where the course would be.

It would be a full, proposed date was around 9/22 last I heard. I've heard that the swim would be in kings beach, bike around KB, Tahoe city, Truckee, homewood, nstar and squaw, t2 at squaw, run along river path. That was from a good source. Rumor mill has the bike being 2 laps of the kb, TC, Truckee triangle, including brockway summit. Not sure if I buy that one. Rumor mill also has it green lighted, just need WTC to confirm!

Doesn't look like IM Canada for me next year. But it would be a change to try to do all my racing in Cali for a year.

The altitude piece is the only part that discourages me. I am not afraid of tough courses but I live in Houston. I don't mind training in heat either but I went to Denver last week for business and holy cow. Even by the end of the week my HR was still thru the roof. It would require me going up almost 2 weeks before the race to acclimate. Seeing how most of the worlds population live at altitudes closer to sea level this wouldn't be an attractive race. I would love to do Boulder 70.3 but same thing. It has nothing to do with winning or KQ'ing @ LT. Just a true suffer fest that wouldn't be fun after you train and train for an event. My muscular strength would be there but wouldn't be able to breathe. Just my opinion. Not saying they shouldn't do it but it will probably end up like IMSG.

Wouldnt worry Dev, WTC unlikely to sanction a difficult IM course in the US, afteral a tough course wouldn't please the US completers-mentality now would it......

Bravo tough guy. Clearly you are superior to everyone inside the United States. I think it's reasonable to debate whether or not holding a race at a destination that is less than favorable to the masses i.e. altitude, remoteness, limited places to stay and distance from major airports is not a great business decision on the WTC's part. It's a free market environment and your customers decide whether or not you survive so yes let's make races in only the toughest of conditions and places to serve the minority or the people who clearly are so "badass" they are above doing races in normal locations. Each IM has it's own difficulty that adds to it even tho it wouldn't appear so. IMTX is serious heat, the new IM Los cabos will be a tough as hell swim and bike, Cozumel has serious heat and wind. So yes some courses seem easier but they are at least in destinations that make it more palatable to the customer from the standpoint of fun and things to do. It also depends on what market you are going after. Texas is clearly a "local market" type race where as Los cabos and Cozumel are destination races. The Mexico races work because of the actual dates and ease of travel for families with kids in school who want to see their family member race. March is spring break and November is thanksgiving. I don't give a flip if you say well we outside the US don't have spring break or thanksgiving and that doesn't matter. Surprise, it does. WTC is a US based company and most entries are from US. Not every race can be a Norseman type race. Do I oppose a tough as nails course? No not at all but putting a really tough course at altitude makes it almost a certain pass by most people. Sorry to disappoint you mr epic badass but companies don't generally make decisions based how much you want to show people how big your d/ck is. We all see how st. George ended up.

The "trick" to altitude performance for those who live at sea level is to either a) acclimate for at least 10 days (this is the best method), realistically, 3 weeks is better. or, b) arrive at the race as close to the start time as possible.

Much of the fatigue is from the body creating more RBC's which takes more than a week.

The "shock" method of arriving from sea level does work.

I did the original Worlds Toughest in '89, '90 and '91 (which makes me 3xstupid!) and lived at sea level in the bay area. The first year I pre-rode and pre-ran the course at least once before the race and that was my best race. I also was training quite a bit more.

So far, as proposed the course would be easier - but not easy. As Dev mentioned the original WT course was a mother f#$%*@! Heck, a section of the run involved minor rock climbing. Even though the ride was "only" 100 miles, and, the run 30k. It was a tough day at the office.

I would sign up for the race - but, I'd do one anywhere here in CA. I'm not holding my breath that It will happen.

I guess a late Sept. race would have KQ's for the year after. That is a plus.

Best to all,
keith
I could break the course record - theoretically, Bishop Pickering - from the movie "Caddyshack"

IM all require you to be there 2 days before to register. That's right in the window of body trying to adapt. I feel it every time go from tx elevation to Denver. First 2 nites mean very restless sleep. I suppose renting an altitude tent is an option if you can't arrive full week out. If true bummer they didn't go with Santa Cruz. Many more options for travel IMO. SF, Big Sur all nearby.
