I've easily gone over 10000 miles on a pair that had more to go but sold them with that bike. I have over 6000 on a pair of 404 Firecrests currently. This is going to depend on such a varied number of variables though that there can't be a point that a rider should expect to get to. Combinations of rim type, spoke type and count, hub type, and rider weight and style not to mention type of terrain ridden on all will play into wheel longevity.

I've put over 20,000 miles on my Felt S32 wheels. I'm sure people have put on a lot more than that.

Damn near forever. OK, that's hyperbole.

My front training wheel (an old Velomax/Easton Vista - their lower level OEM-type wheel) was in daily-driver service from '06-'11.
I only replaced it 'cuz I wanted a HED rim to match the C2 rim on my race wheel, to facilitate ez wheel swaps w/ the Simpkins Egg brake. And because it'd been a while, and that wheel owes me nothing at this point. Plus, the HED wheel looks totally badass.
It still works fine, and I still use it occasionally on my roadie.

Rear wheels seem to be more at risk, due to a # of factors.

I have no idea but I ride Mavic Open Pros with Dura Ace hubs that came on my road bike in 2005. I've never even trued them. The nipples are starting to corrode, but no other noted damage. Normal week is 250 year round then bump up during IM training to 330 (20 weeks), so there are ton of miles on them.

the front "training" wheel on my tri bike is a mavic aksium from 2005. However...I got that wheel because the hub on my velomax/easton blew apart on a ride after only 1 year. the matching velomax/easton rear wheel lasted until 2 years ago...but it only died because my chain snapped and the rear derailleur went into the spokes.

every now and then i think i should replace the aksium wheel...just because it's getting old. But, i don't bother.

a sturdy training wheel should be good for 20k miles, and you'll either have the bearings totally shot or the brake surface completely worn out before the integrity (trueness, dishing, and tension) of the wheel goes off kelter

personally, my front 24H kinlin on white industry hub has been rolling for 14000 miles, and my rear 28H kinlin on CK hub (self built) has been rolling for 4000 miles

Wheels have replaceable parts, like bearings. They need to be checked every season, especially if you ride in rain/snow/dirt. Modern wheels bearings can be easily replaced.
The rims will go "forever." At least I have never seen a bike wheel with worn rim. (maybe I am not old enough)
If the wheel is built right and you are not overload it, the spokes will be there for a long-long time.

I don't have a good odometer reading, but on a conservative 50mpw, 52 weeks/yr x 5 years estimate, mine have been rolling for 10k+ on the original bearings, with about 2k on the new bearings?

100k+ miles on the bike since 2001 primarily on 4 different powertap setups (have 3 PTs now, an old one converted to fixed gear, one for the road bike, older one for the TT bike).

close to 20k on my open pros and my mechanic says the braking surface is worn and I should replace the rims. The front hub though has been shot for a while though. New wheels coming in a week or so :D

My front wheel is from 1995. Probably north of 30k on it. Trek ISO front rim Shimano 600 hub, yeah I said a 600 hub.

Odds are you just haven't seen enough wheels... A well built wheel made from good parts will last a very long time if properly maintained and not abused. But brake tracks and bearing races all wear out eventually. I guess with modern cartridge bearings the hubs should last damned near forever but the rims will eventually wear down for sure. Spokes & nipples... some like to re-use them and others don't. I don't.

I have a pair of 105 Box wheels that have 10k on them, they are still good to go. Might put a disc cover on the rear for TTs.

I had over 30,000 miles on a set of 1276 gram Tune hubs and Alex Crostini 3.1 rims custom built by Ligero Wheelworks. I did crack 3 rear rims but the bearings and front rim are the original. FWIW They are still going strong on someone elses bike.

I have only ridden maybe 2 pairs of trainers 'into the ground' b/c I sell/swap so much stuff. I put 5 full seasons on a set of OpenPros and never trued them once...front brake track was pretty much toast, but structurally it was a bomber. My rear wheels never wear out and I'm probably 70% front braking. I bet I could get 30-40K on a rear if I kept it long enough. Just bought a very inexpensive set of Alex hoops for an experiment to see if they last. Hopefully will update this thread in 4-5 years;)

I have a set of Bomtreger Selects that have way over 20K on them. I grease the bearings every spring. My power tap rear has at least another 20K on it.

Regular truing and bearing work will keep them going a long, long time.

I have a zip 440 that is nearly 20 years old which I still use as my race wheel. No idea how many miles on it. Solid as a rock.

I've got about 18,000 miles on my Ksyrium equipes. The hubs are done, but still perfectly true.

So you ride on your Firecrest 404s for training as well? How do they hold up to everyday use Potholes etc?
