Wheel Advice Purchase on a Budget

Currently I only have Shimano 500's.

I have a budget of $1000 CDN (pre tax/shipping) for a new set of wheels.

Type of Wheel - Clincher
Purpose of Wheel - Triathlons / Grand Fondo / Training

Currently thinking Zipp 101's / Mavic Krysiums (Range) or Mavic Cosmic

Any Advice? or suggestions?

What about the Swiss Sides? Have a set ordered for the wife, so I'm hoping they are a decent set

Might be able to find a set of Jet 4s for that price. Otherwise look at the new Al Force 33 rim. Should be able to get them built up on DT Swiss for ~$750

Any idea where I should look for that idea?

Jet 4's are well over 1500 Cdn from what I have seen

1000 Cdn - 725 US based on exchange

These were $800 just last week. No idea how crossing the border would affect what you'd pay

Keep your eyes on eBay. There's a seller from Minnesota that periodically lists HEDs with cosmetic defects for about 40% off the MSRP.

Try 3sixty5cycling.com.

They're a local Ontario company and build great carbon wheels on a budget. They've sponsored local athletes and show up at events for the past 3-4 years...might even give you a discount on retail price.

Let me know and I can get you in touch with the owner.

Cheers.

Look for a set of Jet+ set. The Black brake track wheels generally aren't on sale, but the old wheels are still great. H

The exchange rate is killing US shopping. 1 US - 1.37 Cdn. Make it tough with the budget I have given myself. Will keep an eye on ebay for that individual.

Best I have found wheel wise new within my budget is:

Dura Ace 9100 C24 clinchers
Mavic - Cosmic Pro Carbon
Mavic - Ksyrium Elite
FFWD - F2A (DT Swiss 240)
ZIPP - 30

Of the five you listed, I have owned all but the Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon. C24, Ksyrium, and FFWD were flawless. The Zipp's have been more maintenance with loose spokes and a rear hub that failed (Zipp warranty replaced FOC). Don't see how you could wrong with any of them.

Williams. Can get brand new for just a bit over your budget if willing to hustle a couple extra bucks.

If I needed another set of wheels, I'd pull the trigger on these immediately:

In the same price range, stay away from Reynolds; poor braking.

Hed is located in MN so odds are the ebay seller is Hed themselves or someone associated with them.

Have to agree with buying a really nice set of used wheels, you can often get them for 50% to 80% off original retail price.

Im not sure what Reynolds wheels you are talking about but my Reynolds Aero 58 / 72 with the Reynolds Cryo Blue Power brake pads are BY FAR the best all around braking carbon wheels have have ever tried.

Problem is the used market is still above my price point for top end wheels.

725 US would be the budget based on exchange rate. Normally wheels cost another 100 to import into Canada plus shipping easy to blow budget.

My experiences with Reynolds (same braking surfaces on all depths for their Aero wheels, right?) were scary, at best, even with their blue pads.

Have you raced on Profile Design, Enve, or Zipp? Any of those with SwissStop (yellow) pads offer superior braking, compared with Reynolds, IME.

Im on Reynolds Aero 58 / 72 with the Reynolds Cryo Blue POWER brake pads right now and they are by far the best I have had.

My last set up was Zipp 404 Firecrest that I had tried several sets of different brake pads non were impressive.

Be sure that you try the newer Reynolds Cryo Blue POWER brake pads with the 6 slots cut in them not the older Reynolds Cryo Blue brake pads with only 3 slots cut in them, there is a big difference.

Read this review by Aerogeeks they agree .....

While a great Price, it is over my budget. Living in Canada I have to deal with the exchange rate + duty. 725US = 1000 CDN.

Have narrowed it down to the following wheel sets. Any advice ?

All under budget, are stiff and able to handle my weight without extra concerns, plus the most important I like the look.

Mavic Ksyrium Elite (2017)

Zipp 30's

FFWD - F2As

Flo. Get the aluminum rim ones from someone who "upgraded" to full carbon. Look on CL or EBay or right here in ST classifieds. That should be well under 1000 CND. Brand new Flos are just a bit over 1000 CND.

Another vote for this. Very good $-for-$ value.
